Stryper radio airplay in the 80s?

Postby GaetanL » Thu Jan 24, 2019 9:53 pm

In the 80s I was sometimes listening to the radio, not anymore...
I have never heard a Stryper song on the radio at that time.
I was wondering if people here that live outside Quebec have heard Stryper on the radio in the 80s? In which country?
Maybe the song "Honestly"? or other songs?
Thanks

I heard them a couple of times on a Christian rock show on a "contemporary Christian music" station in Houston, Texas when I was a teenager and wasn't allowed to listen to "secular" music.

We had a metal show back in the 80's late night Saturday night that used to play Stryper ....... I remember "To Hell with the Devil" and some others -- but definitely not "Honestly" ........

Definitely remember seeing them every once in a blue moon on MTV, but don't recall them on the radio.

It looks like it was more a MTV thing. But I think I never saw them on musiqueplus in Quebec (like the French Canadian version of MTV).

The song Honestly became one of the most requested songs on MTV: Source:

It (and most other metal) was mostly an MTV thing. I remember Honestly being played sometimes at high school dances, but I don't remember ever hearing it (or anything else from Stryper) on the radio.

I saw them (and discovered them, actually) on MTV all the time.

I think this depends partly on where you lived. Detroit in the late 80s / early 90s had three really good hard rock / metal radio stations, and one of them (Z-Rock, national affiliate station) played a wider range of metal (well, metal and hair metal I guess) than MTV ever did.

Yeah; I grew up at the Jersey shore (Wildwood, NJ; no jokes please), and all we had was a local rock station (WZXL) and static-filled, barely receivable stations from Philadelphia. Not sure they qualify as metal (they were at least hair metal, maybe), but I can only remember hearing Bon Jovi on the radio. :P

I love the Jersey shore! I go there almost every year since 2008 for my summer vacation!
