OVERHEAD / Telepathic Minds ..... Sci-Fi / Neo-Prog.

Post by LarryD » Mon Apr 24, 2023 3:59 pm

Ken Golden suggested this one to me, and it's great. This one is very hard to describe ..... I've included a review link below as well as the band site for samples......
This is a 2-CD set, with fantastic artwork. Long songs, ranging from 17:00 to 12:00 to 9:00 with chapters ....... it's what I call Sci-Fi Neo-Prog, meaning the story seems to be otherworldly, and the vocals have a sci-fi feel to them as well. I agree with some of the band influences the review mentions, like Pink Floyd, Genesis, but I would not throw in ELP or YES, instead they inject a lot of melodic rock into their sound (think Alan Parsons Project), and they use the flute as a lead instrument as well as guitar. It can border on the heaviness of say a later Knight Area disc, but not much. Its a much more laid back sound for sure......
Very few Neo-Prog bands put out double CDs like this, especially in today's market but it makes me think back to bands like Morphelia if anyone remembers them......
This is a great find from a genre that doesn't shine like it used to, anyone looking for that elusive Neo-Prog gem would do well to check these guys out .....

I listened to three of these monster-long tunes this morning and I really enjoyed the music. Well-written neo-prog with a lot of Pink Floyd'isms.
However, it sounds like the band were discussing how to find a singer and one of them said "My 15 year old nephew sings in his high school band, perhaps we should try him out?". His voice is that of a child/teen and not that of a man, and it sounds pretty crappy to me. If this band had a strong singer, I'd be all over it.
