Noveria "Gates of the Underworld"

Musically a Symphony X clone, but with vocals more akin to Italian power metal. I believe this is their third album, and they keep getting stronger. Musically this is SPOT ON SX right down to the guitar tones and keyboard orchestrations.... Only thing holding it back is I want to hear that classic SX super full, uber melodic chorus and they don't nail it here as strong as SX did.

If I ever get around to a top 10 list for 2023, this is probably a top 5 for me.

****Good to hear - I'll be grabbing it soon. Thanks......

I have decided to revisit Shadow Gallery discography after quite some years.

Carved in Stone is my absolute favorite, probably because this was their first their album I listened to. Then my ranking is 2) Tyranny, 3) Room V, 4) Legacy, 5) debut, 6) Digital Ghosts. I like Tyranny and Room V, I value the debut for what it is, but I can't really get into Legacy and Digital Ghosts, and I wonder should I try more or give up... :)

At the same time, I started listening to Shadow Gallery Untold podcasts with stories/interviews with the band, pretty good stuff: https://open.spotify.com/show/65vWm5EoWs1lMElPnOX8rk

Interesting ranking - mine is quite different:
1) Tyranny
2) Legacy
3) Carved in Stone
4) Shadow Gallery
5) Digital Ghosts
6) Room V

To be honest, I think the first three on my list are all extremely close in quality and all are 10 out of 10 albums. Some of the very best in progressive metal ever.

There’s a big drop in quality down to the debut, and another big drop to Digital Ghosts. For some reason I don’t like Room V at all - I have tried and every time I really dislike it.

EXTERNAL - Dreamscapes
A Finnish prog-metal band in the "new" style similar to Caligula's Horse, Haken, Leprous, etc.

While I wait for my copy of the new Caligula's Horse to arrive I was listening to their discography and it finished and fell into the next thing alphabetically which is Candlebox for me. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy just a solid blues based rock group. Their 1993 S/T debut is still really good start to finish.

Also felt the grunge urge the other day and grabbed Alice in Chains, which is also timeless blues based stuff. As Rick Beato loves to point out, you can't go wrong starting from the blues.

DRACONIAN - Under a Godless Veil
I still think it's a crying shame that Heike left the band, and while the albums with Lisa were good, I doubt that Draconian will ever again make anything as powerful as this one ("Under a Godless Veil") or "Sovran". Heike's voice is a one-of-a-kind, whereas Lisa is more standard goth vocalist.

***It is so cool that this band keeps on putting out discs ...... I did not purchase the last two I think because I have all I need at this point ...... this is one band that I'd really like to see live, but I'm sure that won't be happening at this point ....... Sovran is indeed excellent.

Well, “Sovran” and “Under a Godless Veil” are the last two, and the only ones with Heike.

I’m mildly curious about the next one (when it ever gets done) but Lisa’s voice just doesn’t appeal to me nearly as much as Heike’s.

"The Truth Ain't Kind" is a classic prog metal song. I still listen to it often! The first 3 tracks of that album "Behind" are the best.

How do you listen to music? You only pick one (or a few) songs from each album, and then moves on to the next one?
That's an interesting approach - when I listen to music, I typically put an album on and listen from start to finish.

I do both. Sometimes I listen to whole albums and sometimes track by track. In my car it's pretty much always whole albums. At home it's both. The song lists I posted recently, I wanted 2 intense hours of music and touch a bit of everything! :)

Slow day at work, so here's my week so far:

Affector "Harmageddon" - international project with Ted Leonard on vocals. Religious themed prog metal. Heavier than his usual fare.

Lynch Pilson "Heavy Hitters" - I'm a sucker for a good covers album..... This one is a bit mixed. It's got a cover of Joan Osborne's "What if God Was One of Us" which works, and it's got covers of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" and REM's "End of the World as We Know It" which I EXPECTED to work better but didn't quite cut it. Still and all, fun enough for what it is and WAY better than the second where Jeff isn't singing.

Yes "Highlights" - 'nuff said.

Angra "Holy Land" - An album that will always hold a special place for me.... First Angra I ever heard after buying the Jap import for $30 without ever having heard a note. Bought purely on hype. Worth EVERY PENNY. One of my favorite bands for their firsr five albums, before gradually sliding into near mediocrity. I've listened to the newest one just a couple of times, and it DOES come closer to their classic sound, but still missing..... Something (Kiko???)

Great White "Hooked" - Letdown album for me following several KILLER albums, but then they bounced back STRONG with "Psycho City". For me, "Hooked" just was TOO blues and could have used a bit more "rock", but that's just my tastes.

Transmission "Id Ego and Superego" - German prog metal band, featuring the singer of Saga on one track if my ears don't deceive me. I seem to remember enjoying this more back in the day. Vocalist wasn't really cutting it for me today, but the music is top notch still.

Demons & Wizards "III" - My personal fave of the D&W albums Hansi and Capital stormin' Jon put out. A bit darker than the first two, and the songs just sound more "complete" and full. Alas, likely the last we'll ever hear from them!

In Paradisum "Symfonia" - One and done Timo Tolkki + Andre Matos project. While not as strong as either at their peaks, it works 100% for me. Classic power metal with Andre's golden vocals out front. Another artist gone WAY WAY WAY too soon.

Fates Warning "Theories of Flight" - Just a PERFECT modern FW album, front to back. This has everything I want in a Fates album, and is my favorite of their albums post-Parallels.

Lillian Axe "Psychoschizophrenia" (Resurrection box set version with bunch of bonus goodies) - I'm a pure sucker for Stevie Blaze and company. Truly my favorite surviving late 80s hard rock outfit, and anything they put out since has been EXTREMELY solid. New box set contains a range of albums from "Poetic Justice" through "Sad Day on Planet Earth" (if I recall offhand) with a ton of bonus demos and acoustic / live stuff tacked on. Another box set coming next month with even more stuff. Keep 'em coming boys.

I don't remember this one (although I just checked out their Metal Archives profile and I kind of remember seeing the cover art) ... I might have to check this out, just because I like Ted's voice.

I think their best albums were "Hooked" and "Psycho City" and depending on the day it could be either of them. I love their blues phase.

Symfonia was the band name, and "In Paradisum" the album title, but nevertheless, it's okay ... not amazing. Both Timo and Andre made much better stuff before this.

Interesting - I don't like this album nearly as much as "Long Day Good Night", but yeah, they had a slew of "mediocre" albums after "A Pleasant..." (which I love). I've grown to like them all, but I just don't love 'em as much as anything from 84-97.

Quality band when they wanted to - shitty band occassionally.

Exit Eden - Exit Eden - Femmes Fataes
Normally I'm not into Covers, but these write some of the best damn cover tunes ever! I know they are good when they make me love certain pop songs that I would normally hate LOL. They are just good at putting a great metal spin on songs and of course with great vocals. Good Stuff. Also has a great original "Run" with Marcos contributing some vocal pieces.

Kristoffer Gildenlow: Empty
Awesome laid back light prog with killer guitar solos.
Read where his other solo records were even lighter, more ambient and what not. I did not take a shot at any before this, but seeing how great this one is I might take a chance. Definitely for the lighter mood times. Like I mentioned, the guitar solos are awesome, Floyd like and played by guests, not Kristoffer. His voice is quite similar to Daniel. Loving this.

Putting some miles on the new Exocrine. After that I've got the newer Ions album in the queue because I like musical whiplash sometimes.

ARTIFICIAL LANGUAGE - Skinwalker
Can't wait for the new album if the rest of the material is as good as this song. It has a very clear Caligula's Horse meets Leprous vibe, but a bit more on the djentier side.

Confessor - Condemned, 1991. It's a very specific and one-off band, and not a very easy listen. But I like occasionally returning to it, this mixture of technical progressive doom (Watchtower and Solitude Aeturnus?) has never been repeated.

Prospekt - The Illuminated Sky, 2017. A fine album released by Sensory, so maybe you all already know it? :) Great melodic technical progressive metal, reminds of early Circus Maximus and Symphony X.

Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium, 2023. A pretty unorthodox death metal album with lots of progressive and technical tendencies.

That's a classic album - is it tech/prog metal or is it doom metal? I never figured it out, I just know I love it everytime I listen to it, and then I put it aside for another year or two before revisiting. But yeah, it was a one of a kind album. Their reunion album was good for what it was, but just didn't touch on the quality of "Condemned".

Can't remember if I've listened to it since it came out, but it was pretty OK. The debut EP and first full length were much better though.

Yes, definitely an interesting album. It missed my top 100 last year, but I enjoyed it.

***I really like this disc ...... I bought the FLAC version of it and it sounded wonderful ...... his vocals can get a bit annoying, but not enough to take away from the greatness of the music ...... sure, totally Symphony X worship, but done very well ........

SYNCATTO - Fiction
Instrumental next-gen prog / djent from guitarist Charlie Robbins (Artificial Language). This is somewhere in the Animals as Leaders / Polyphia vein, but with a bit of a prog-metal edge to it (less pop than Polyphia, less djent than AaL). Very well done, and it has a few guest performances from people like Jordan Ruddess and AJ Minette (The Human Abstract). As always, a full album of instrumental music tends to bore me, but for the occasional listen, this is really impressive stuff.

Unsurprisingly, I really like that. I'm going to be checking out more of that really soon.
