Post by introclaus » Fri Oct 07, 2022 5:18 pm

Let's give it a shot, shall we?

Feel free to include old school black, necro-black, symphonic black, progressive black, folk-black, viking black, post-black, and whatever black metal you feel belong here :)

1) List only your top 15 albums ... no "bubblers" or "honorary mentions"
2) List only one (1) album per band.

1. Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
2. Dimmu Borgir - Stormblast (original recording, NOT the re-recording)
3. Satyricon - The Shadowthrone
4. In the Woods ... Omnio
5. Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
6. Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters
7. Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale
8. Solefald - Neonism
9. Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace
10. Mayhem - De Mysteriis de Sathanas
11. Limbonic Art - Moon in the Scorpio
12. Ulver - Bergtatt
13. Sigh - In Somniphobia
14. Storm - Nordavind
15. Fleurety - Min Tid Skal Komme

Not much of a fan of traditional black metal. All but one of these are proggy. The other (Iskald) is melodic.

1. Warpstone - Daemonic Warpfire (2012)
2. Drottnar - Welterwerk (2006)
3. Thy Darkened Shade - Liber Lvcifer I: Khem Sedjet (2014)
4. Veilburner - The Obscene Rite (2016)
5. Ephel Duath - Phormula (2000)
6. Stone Healer - Conquistador (2021)
7. Orakle - Eclats (2015)
8. Warblade - The Phantom Blaze (2005)
9. Abgott - Godfather in Black (2009)
10. Mortuary Drape - Tolling 13 Knell (2000)
11. Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel (2014)
12. Iskald - The Sun I Carried Alone (2011)
13. Deathspell Omega - Paracletus (2010)

That's the most absurd (in a good way?) list of black metal favorites I've ever seen ... haha ... amazing! There's not one of the "classic" bands to be found here. I guess we really did get into specific genres at different times even if I believe we're around same age?

Only three of these I own:
Orakle, which is AWESOME
Ephel Duath, which is good but not one I visit often (also, I have the "Rephormula" version which was a re-release a few years later i believe)
Ne Obliviscaris, which I don't consider black at all, but definitely is great

I own one Mortuary Drape ("all the withches dance" 94), but it's not an album I'd ever feel the need to go back to

I've heard of Deathspell Omega, Drottnar and Iskald, but never checked them out.
Never heard of Warpstone, Thy Darkened Shade, Veilburner, Stone Healer, Warblade, Abgott - where should I start?

I like every album on this list to at least some amount.
One odd opinion I have is that I have warmed up to the Stormblast remake over the years. When it came out I wanted nothing to do with it. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Laughed at my friends who bought it. But as time has gone on I've surprised myself with how much I, uh, don't hate it. It's maybe one third as good as the original, but it's not as much of an utter waste as I assumed when it was new.

Interesting.
I will try to give it another spin to see if time has changed my opinion.

Please post your list :))))
