VOLA/Voyager/Four Stroke Baron tour recap

Post by jhallum » Wed Oct 05, 2022 11:14 am

The missus and I flew for a short EU vacation in the Netherlands and caught the VOLA/Voyager/ Four Stroke Baron tour last week at the small room in the 013 and Melkweg. I wrote a longer review for the college radio station, but below is the highlights.

Four Stroke Baron: quirky, new wave influenced, heavy, interesting vocoder vocal effects, lots of promise and a great opener for the other two bands. Will go see again.

Voyager: Best setlist I think they've had since the 2015 Prog Power set. Got Dreamer and Submarine, but also a nice mix of old and new going back to Meaning of I. So much energy compared to the last PP show in 2018. Wish they would come back to the US and soon.

VOLA: Holy cow. I had some reservations in doing a trip for two club shows by the same band...what if it sucked? They delivered and then some. Show started by emphasizing the melodic side of the band(24 Light Years, Napalm, Ruby Pool), dipped in to a few ballad/slow tracks, and ended with a huge heavy bang before an encore with more melody and less heaviness (Whaler and Inside Your Fur). The only song I didn't get was Stone Leader Falling Down, but everything else was so good it didn't matter. The whole crowd at Melkweg was moshing hard through the end of the set, it was a massive crushing crescendo. If you live in the Northeast in November, go see them, they were SO GOOD. GO SEE THEM.

Nice! I went to Tilburg in 2019 for Ayreon at 013 and I've been charmed by the place ever since. I'd love to go back for almost any reason, but definitely for some quality shows.

Did you see the announcement of the "01011100101010010101111000001100101001" performance next year? Sept 2023?

I'm going to tap this microphone for VOLA one more time. If you get a chance to see them in Chicago, Cleveland, Baltimore or NYC before they leave the US, you best do so. Saw them in front of 150 people in Detroit and they were unreally good in a tiny club. They are going to amaze people at PPUSA in September.
