An Icelandic band for you to check out: MÚR!

Post by ThorsteinnKolbeinsson » Tue Aug 23, 2022 10:09 pm

Hey guys

So, May this year I held the Icelandic part of the Wacken Open Air Metal Battle contest for the 10th time and I invited a shit load of foreign music biz people to be in the jury. 10 people made their way to Iceland for this and coupled with 6 domestic people I had a jury of 16 people this year. Why not go big! :) This was my 10 year anniversary of sending bands to Wacken, so I decided to go big.

The winner of the contest was a young band that simply blew everyone's minds. Judges talked about how they knew they had the winner only seconds into their performance. haha. In fact, the band was 1 point shy of taking home a perfect score, as all judges except for 1 gave them their max points, with the lone jury member not doing so, gave them his 2nd highest remark. Pretty crazy.

Anyway, the band is called Múr and they play "keytar driven doomsday metal", or something like that :) haha. their bio reads:

"Keytar-driven extreme metal from Iceland. Múr (Icelandic for brick wall or mortar) forges apocalyptic soundscapes where soaring melodies and unrelenting rhythms combine with introspective, nihilistic narratives to form a wall of raw emotion.

The band first saw the light of day in the summer of 2021, after having gradually pieced itself together the previous three years. In the following months, Múr went on to make a name for themselves in the Icelandic metal scene, consistently delivering tight, gut-punching performances to great reception, playing both their own shows, and being the opening act for three separate album release concerts."

Needless to say the band played Wacken earlier this month and got a very nice 4th place in the finals! Not bad for a band only formed last year. I'd like to take the opportunity here and brag a little bit. :) With this result, Icelandic bands have now been in the top 5 of the contest (30 bands are in the finals) 3 times in the last 4 attempts. Not bad for a nation of only 360.000 people :)

The band doesn't have an album out yet, but they are currently putting finishing touches on their debut album as we speak and have already gotten label interest from several labels. In the meantime, they did release a killer sounding live video, filmed with 2 cameras and mixed sound. Check it out here. Don't let it bother you that the audience is a bit subdued, but this was actually recorded at the keytarist/singer's graduation concert from his music school, so there's lots of non-metalhead family members there, grandparents etc...

I think this band is going to get pretty huge. See for yourself. Note the 7/8 time signature :)

Hey Thorsteinn
Hope you’re doing great my friend. It’s been a while :)

Yes, I read about Mur and their performance at the “WoA Battle” that you hosted … it might be in heavymetal.DK I read it? The video from that show was there and it blew me away - so cool with the proggy/atmospheric black metal and then the keytar on top. Very original and really nice. Hopefully there’ll be an album out soon.

T, keep up the good work promoting the Icelandic scene - you’ve been doing it for so long and are doing it so well. Cheers buddy!

Yes, I invited Carsten Bach from heavymetal.dk over to cover the event. :)

Thanks for the kind words :)

BTW, have you heard Power Paladin yet? I got them signed to Atomic Fire Records :)

Good job. Yeah I heard it but didn’t like it enough to invest more time into it.

I probably have to give it a second chance if you say it’s that awesome :)

hehe, it is! When I sent the album over to Markus Wosgien, who was then working for Nuclear Blast, he replied to me with this:

"The album is fantastic, it is the music I love and you play it so fresh and powerful, that reminds me to the old 90s days of HammerFall, Edguy, Rhapsody and Stratovarius. So yes: we would love to sign you guys and release it."

Of course, then the reviews started flowing in and e.g. this one from aforementioned Carsten Bach of heavymetal.dk 10/10 :)

Distorted Sound Mag, 9/10

The Metal Observer, 9,5/10

And of course BangerTV's Blayne Smith put the release in the Best New Metal Releases of January 2022 :) When he published the video back in January.

These guys entered my 2019 Wacken Metal Battle contest, made it into the final but like Sweden's Orbit Culture didn't win the contest (OC was in WMB Sweden in 2018 and made it to the final there). They took in all the feedback they got from the judges however and came back much stronger. I heard the album in its demo stage and gave them feedback, the band spent some extended time with the album, got the sound perfect and then I heard it and was floored. I was like: "No guys, you're not just going to just self-release it on Spotify in about a weeks time! Let me see if a label is interested first. This needs to go much further." :) And Markus Wosgien and Markus Steiger liked it enough to make it Atomic Fire's first ever new signing and release!

Of course prior to this, back in 2020, the band had the 1st single from the album finished, "Kraven The Hunter", and entered with it in the rock radio station "The X" (or Xið as it's called in Icelandic) song contest and bloody well won that with the song (all 5:30 minutes of it). The song then managed to stay in the Radio Xið chart in the 1st place for 6 bloody weeks! They had a breakthrough basically in Iceland.

I can only recommend at least one entire spin of the entire album :)
