My top 50 of 2021 (with YouTube links)

Post by Guillaume » Mon Dec 27, 2021 2:11 am

Well, I played 367 albums over the year. Here's my top listing.

Top 50 of 2021 :

#50 Herman Frank - Two For A Lie (heavy/power metal)
https://youtu.be/YdlSg4ttUh8
Good old Herman keeps releasing his traditional heavy/power stuff in the Accept style, again with powerhouse Rick Altzi on vocals. You know what you’re gonna get and it’s not a bad thing.

#49 Angelus Apatrida - s/t (thrash metal)
https://youtu.be/MiERM1dmfJo
Spanish thrashers always release quality material and this new album is no exception, save maybe for the vocals which are more aggressive at times here.

#48 Alcatrazz - V (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/bdn8ppUCVBQ
Switching singers (Doogie White replacing legendary Graham Bonnet) was a risky move, but this album still delivers, arguably their speedier and heavier ever. And Doogie does a fine job, as expected.

#47 Poverty's No Crime - A Secret To Hide (prog metal)
https://youtu.be/n1Xd_woZExA
Veteran German prog metallers are back with an excellent album, who could be my fave of them ever.

#46 Todd Michael Hall - Sonic Healing (70s hard rock)
https://youtu.be/IfuykhdpaPs
Riot V singer releases his first solo album, with Metal Church’s Kurt Vanderhoof on guitars, that brings to mind 70s Riot and others in the style. Catchy and classy.

#45 Beast In Black - Dark Connection (hard rock/melodic metal)
https://youtu.be/tXZK2PIL3pc
Once again quality catchy stuff by this special band who loves the 80s sound mixed with modern melodic metal style.

#44 Dee Snider - Leave A Scar (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/AdaDjyWzuVQ
Twisted Sister legend sings on the heaviest material of his career for a 2nd album in a row. Quality modern heavy metal, with the emphasis on “heavy”, while still being melodic enough. Dee still got the powerful pipes at age 66.

#43 Accept- Too Mean To Die (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/DQy6npwdwsY
On this 5th album with singer Mark Tornillo, we get once again quality metal in the classic style of the band, even if Wolf Hoffman is now the lone original member left.

#42 WarKings – Revolution (heavy/power metal)
https://youtu.be/VcDNUTG-3TQ
First album of them that really clicks with me, this is power metal that focuses on heavy rhythms and catchy melodies, with powerful vocals by the guy who also sings with the power/prog band Serenity.

#41 U.D.O. - Game Over (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/HsHh9hMlayY
Udo beats his former band this year for me. Quality metal all over with a talented band of younger talent, with this particular voice that doesn’t change over the years.

#40 Desecrator - Summoning (thrash metal)
https://youtu.be/C0jAd4lZ9HM
This Australian thrash metal band is one of the newcomers of the year for me (I never heard their first album). Quality thrash with excellent vocals, riffing and just enough melody.

#39 David Reece - Blacklist Utopia (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/zJfAy0gDW4M
Veteran singer is back with his heaviest solo album ever. Still the powerful pipes on this good old heavy metal album.

#38 Motorjesus – Hellbreaker (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/vEf5M4nTj9w
1st album of this veteran German band that grabs me fully. Excellent heavy metal with very good vocals that often remind me of Russell Allen.

#37 Orden Ogan - Final Days (heavy/power metal)
https://youtu.be/xgf29D_36Cs
This album finally made me a fan of the band. High quality catchy melodic heavy/power metal with great in-your-face production.

#36 Crystal Viper - The Cult (heavy/speed metal)
https://youtu.be/iZddid_gNpc
Marta Gabriel and co. deliver maybe their best album yet, classic melodic heavy metal that can get speedy at times.

#35 Todd La Torre - Rejoice In Suffering (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/n6BU39L2N9I
Powerhouse Queensrÿche singer gives us his first solo album (on which he also plays drums). He proves he’s really a vocal chameleon on this very diverse and very heavy overall metal album.

#34 Powerwolf - Call Of The Wild (melodic power metal)
https://youtu.be/Xp_rlSmt2P0
This veteran German band always knew how to write a catchy and powerful metal song and this album doesn’t change the formula, which is a great thing for me.

#33 King Company - Trapped (hard rock)
https://youtu.be/67Cw-LuUFys
3rd album album of the Finnish hard rockers with a 3rd singer. It doesn’t mind, still quality catchy stuff.

#32 Wicked Sensation - Outbreak (hard rock/heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/Ymblzv9GWK8
2nd entry of David Reece in my listing. This is the 2nd album of the band with his vocals. Once again, quality riffs and melodies all over. Could have stepped higher if it hadn’t been released so late.

#31 Brainstorm - Wall Of Skulls (heavy/power metal)
https://youtu.be/2OCex67ppgc
Another band for which you know what you’re gonna get. Once again, a good mix of mid-pace and speedier double-bass songs from the German veterans. Singer Andy B. Franck remains a powerhouse.

#30 W.E.T. – Retransmission (hard rock)
https://youtu.be/XSoFybZG0_I
This album has the killer heavy riffs that miss on the last Eclipse album for me. Great hard rocking stuff with great vox by the always powerful Jeff Scott Soto and Eric Martensson.

#29 Dream Theater - A View From The Top Of The World (prog metal)
https://youtu.be/zeOkeoXyt-4
1st album of these prog metal masters that I like all the way since a very long time. Most likely “safe” songs for them, but so efficient. And pretty much “heavy” all over, which is a plus for me.

#28 Thy Row – Unchained (hard rock/heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/nVrAw9vMouw
This Finnish band is one of the best newcomers of the years. Catchy melodic hard rock/metal with powerful vocals.

#27 Spektra – Overload (hard rock)
https://youtu.be/V2Ytn65zQac
Another great new band, this time from Brazil, who delivers high-quality hard rock, with great vocals, and the help of legend Jeff Scott Soto on backing vox.

#26 Against Evil - End Of The Line (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/cjEIAk4oxE4
2nd and best album from the Indian metal band. True “heavy” metal is the game here and they deliver.

#25 Brother Against Brother - Brother Against Brother (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/FvkJ6OzoC3Q
New melodic metal project featuring 2 “new” great Brazilian singers, Renan Zonta and Nando Fernandes. Great powerful vocals and catchy melodies abound.

#24 Blaze Bayley - War Within Me (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/b_GwQlMGPfk
Blaze continues to give us quality heavy metal with his powerful vocals that don’t age and a quality backing band. Hats off for this warrior.

#23 Legions Of The Night - Sorrow Is The Cure (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/NAYA-3KJ3cE
New band with powerhouse Henning Basse on vocals (ex-Metalium, ex-Firewind, ex-Mayan) that reminds of Savatage in each of their eras. Quality stuff.

#22 Sortilège - Phoenix (80s heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/AmY8tesF0zo
Christian “Zouille” Augustin is back with his new version of the French 80s classic metal band, with re-recorded versions of the classics and 2 new songs. His vocals remain as powerful as ever.

#21 Save The World - Two (hard rock/AOR)
https://youtu.be/79nLnLyNZLU
This band formed by seasoned musicians blends many influences from hard rock to metal to prog to AOR. They know how to write a catchy song. Great varied album and this song is one of my faves of the year.

#20 Warrior Path - The Mad King (heavy/power metal)
https://youtu.be/h22MrZgxvXU
2nd and best album of the melodic power metallers, this time with powerhouse Daniel Heiman (Lost Horizon, Harmony) on vocals.

#19 Flotsam And Jetsam - Blood In The Water (thrash/power metal)
https://youtu.be/tP41SH7najE
F&J are on a roll. Their last 2 albums are some of the best of their career. Eric’s vocals remain killer, he doesn’t age and Ken Mary delivers another killer performance on drums. Great thrash/power stuff, that doesn’t forget to keep melody present.

#18 Evergrey - Escape Of The Phoenix (prog metal)
https://youtu.be/RBAQO8Oao3w
This band remains a force in the prog metal field, with the always great emotional vocals of Tom Englund and the powerful riffs and melodies.

#17 Artillery – X (melodic thrash metal)
https://youtu.be/-hrFbvwtjGA
Veteran Danish thrashers get the #1 spot in thrash for me this year. Great mix of thrashier songs and more melodic mid-pace ones, but always with great riffing.

#16 Joel Hoekstra's 13 - Running Games (hard rock/melodic metal)
https://youtu.be/vP-uu0lzyBI
Whitesnake guitarist, Dio/Sabbath drummer, Symphony X singer. All is there for some excellent melodic hard rock/metal stuff.

#15 Fans Of The Dark - Fans Of The Dark (hard rock)
https://youtu.be/ddmTGYwNkl4
Another one of best newcomers of the year for me. Catchy hard rocking stuff with excellent riffing and vocals.

#14 Animate - Infinite Imaginations (prog metal)
https://youtu.be/kdgrAsZAP6c
This new Polish prog metal band just delivered my fave album of the year in that style. Huge melodies, great crunchy riffing and high class musicianship all around.

#13 Crowne - Kings Of The North (hard rock)
https://youtu.be/vf9w4BxudZE
This new Swedish band is another of the newcomers of the year. Huge melodies, powerful vox, great riffing, all is there.

#12 Laurenne/Louhimo - The Reckoning (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/rtNPw5717LE
Powerhouse vocalists from Smackbound and Battle Beast, Netta Laurenne and Noora Louhimo, whose voices are very similar at times, united on this powerful melodic heavy metal album.

#11 Lords Of Black - Alchemy Of Souls Part II (heavy/power metal)
https://youtu.be/UFb7HQVokzs
Tony Hernando and Ronnie Romero once again give us a high quality heavy/power metal album full of heavy riffs and powerful vocals and melodies.

#10 Sunstorm - Afterlife (hard rock/melodic metal)
https://youtu.be/UOfCuhLd6eU
Sunstorm without Joe Lynn Turner on vocals seems weird at first but Ronnie Romero gives a great performance on what is now the heaviest album from this project ever.

#9 Ronnie Atkins - One Shot (hard rock/AOR)
https://youtu.be/lp-uAQNxG7g
Ronnie Atkins is one of the best voices in hard rock/metal since the mid 80s with his band Pretty Maids and the awful news of his advanced-stage cancer really affected me. He released this wonderful album with touching lyrics as most likely the last of his life but the warrior he is keeps on fighting and another album is planned for next year. Hang on Ronnie, here’s hoping for a miracle in your case.

#8 Existance - Wolf Attack (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/DPm4oLvilas
French metallers deliver their best album so far. One of the best new true heavy metal bands, who deserve more recognition.

#7 Johan Kihlberg's Impera - Spirit Of Alchemy (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/7pYW5Og2IfU
A band with Jonny Lindqvist (Nocturnal Rites) , Snowy Shaw (King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Dream Evil), Lars Criss (Lions Share) and John Leven (Europe) can’t do no wrong. First class melodic heavy metal.

#6 Leverage - Above The Beyond (hard rock/melodic metal)
https://youtu.be/mQ-0F5WQamM
2nd album of the veteran Finnish band with new vocalist Kimmo Blom. This band once again succeeds in mixing many styles, hard rock, metal, prog, AOR… Huge melodies all over.

#5 Inglorious - We Will Ride (hard rock)
https://youtu.be/RB2qy7boLlw
Best album so far for the UK hard rock band fronted by Nathan James, one of the rising vocal stars in the style.

#4 Wicked Smile - Wait For The Night (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/TNr5qOvD8sA
New band from Australia with powerhouse Danny Cecati (ex-Pegazus, ex-Eyefear) on vocals, who is as powerful as ever. Great true heavy metal as it was back in the glory days.

#3 Volbeat - Servant Of The Mind (heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/snItFJlBtTc
Finally, Volbeat are back! This could have gained a couple spots, maybe even #1, if didn’t come so late. Volbeat are heavy again, with an almost heavy all over album (save for a couple songs), after a few disappointing lighter ones as of late.

#2 The Grandmaster - Skywards (melodic heavy metal)
https://youtu.be/w2yRzYLcbwk
Where was this killer Brazilian singer all these years? Nando Fernandes is THE newcomer of the year. But he’s 54!! Killer powerful singer in the Jorn/Dio style and the album is like a lost Allen/Lande album written by Magnus Karlsson. Can’t wait to hear more from this dude. This band also features Jens Ludwig from Edguy on guitars.

#1 Manimal - Armageddon (heavy/power metal)
https://youtu.be/Ol0Lj8SHCHc
The Swedish band delivers his best album yet. Killer heavy/power metal with great riffing and the Halford-ish vocals of powerhouse Samuel Nyman. All hails!

Great mentions for these 3 EPs:

Sorcerer - Reverence EP (heavy/doom metal)
https://youtu.be/njPeQpBRmUk
4 killer cover songs that have been “Sorcerized”.

Spirit Adrift - Forge Your Future EP
https://youtu.be/gtIR6Y_vVxU
Once again, true heavy metal is the way!

Dirkschneider & The Old Crew - Every Heart Is Burning EP
https://youtu.be/RmEt6FnFl54
Udo with Peter Baltes and Stephen Kaufmann (of Accept fame) releasing new songs is priceless.

This list is insane - so much stuff I need to check out. I’m going to comment back once I’ve completed writing my own list (hopefully by tomorrow). As always, thank you for putting in the effort to list 50 bands and providing links!

Fantastic list Guillaume!

Sidenote 1: Did Frontiers pay you to place all their releases on this list? :D
Sidenote 2: Those 10 albums that are also on my list I've not commented on, so there's a few missing from the list.

That's a lot of solo albums from "has-beens" ... haha :)
I will say, the Todd Michael Hall album do have some of the old school 70's Riot vibe (which is fun considering he is in RiotV to sing the 80's style Riot) and I appreciate that. It just wasn't enough to win me over.

#31 Brainstorm - Wall Of Skulls (heavy/power metal)
#23 Legions Of The Night - Sorrow Is The Cure (heavy metal)
#22 Sortilège - Phoenix (80s heavy metal)
#17 Artillery – X (melodic thrash metal)
#6 Leverage - Above The Beyond (hard rock/melodic metal)
#2 The Grandmaster - Skywards (melodic heavy metal)
I should like these, but they all fall just a bit short of making it.
Orden Ogan suffer from a clinical production I think - it could be great, but it's so sterile sounding. I have all their other albums, but this is the one I've passed on this year. I'll try again.
Brainstorm has always been a hit or miss for me. Some of their albums are killer, some are bland. This one falls in between.
I checked out Legions of the Night based on Glenn's list, thinking I was gonna love it, but meh.
Sortilege is obviously a classic, but I don't feel this sound has held up as well as it should in 2021.
Artillery isn't thrash anymore, and in my opinion Michael should change the name to Missing Link, as this is more like his solo project from the mid 90's.
Leverage is quite good, but I think "Blind Fire" is the only of theirs I really need.
I really like Nando's voice on The Grandmaster (better than on Brother Against Brother actually), but the music is too derivative for my taste.

#20 Warrior Path - The Mad King (heavy/power metal)
I own these, they just didn't make the list. All of them I thought was a step down from previous releases. I wanted to love the Accept as much as that band deserves (they were actually THE first heavy metal band I ever fell in love with back in the early 80's).

#1 Manimal - Armageddon (heavy/power metal)
And these are the ones I finally picked up based on your list.
Well, other people had also mentioned Warkings in their lists, so I finally now checked it out, and I liked it enough to purchase.
Desecrator is great - don't know why I had passed on it earlier (I do remember their video, as that dude needs to shave off those pieces of hair he calls a mullet).
Motorjesus was a huge surprise - I expected something like Volbeat or Motorhead based on the name, but this is great heavy metal!
And yeah, I've now seen that Manimal on enough lists to where it's about time I pull the trigger on it.

From your additional lists, these are all good-to-great stuff in my opinion. I'm a bit annoyed by the way Sorcerer put out the EP, (I bought the first 3 singles, and then suddenly the final song comes out, but only as part of the EP, which made me have to rebuy it all), but those are wonderful covers.

Guillaume, I picked up (based on another year end list) the latest WARDRUM "Mavericks" album, which is crazy good. I'm surprised that's not on your list, since it as far as I can tell totally should appeal to you. It's power metal with great vocals (ahhh, that might be the problem HAHAHA) and super skilled musicians. Musically it reminds me of Myrath mixed with Tad Morose. If you haven't checked it out, please do.

Didn't hear about this one at all. Played the 2 videos and it's indeed very good stuff that would most likely have made my list. I'll check the whole thing for sure.
As for the vocals, I'm surely not as high on him as you, dude is good but a bit too high for my taste at times, but he won't be a problem.

Thanks for the tip and for the comments on my list. I still need to check out some bands from yours.

Haha I knew you and I would disagree on vocals as we almost always do. That said, on the bands previous 3 or 4 albums it was Yannis that was the vocalist and he is typically even higher pitched, but you seem to like him right?

I like him at times but also hate him at times when he goes over the top, which is too often IMO. This is why I prefer Battle Beast over Beast In Black.

Too funny - I vastly prefer BiB over BB, not only because of music but also because I’d rather listen to Yannis all day long than even an hour of Noora. Yannis has personality whereas Noora just bores me to sleep. When it comes to singers you and I are night and day lol
