Final album (I think) of 2022 ...

LORD OF THE LOST - Blood & Glitter

Interesting idea to release an album like this ... one single released a week prior, no buzz going on up to release, and release on 12/30 so it won't make "end of year lists" ... perhaps "strange" is a better word than "interesting" lol. Very odd choice for sure, but I guess the band doesn't care about breaking onto the hit lists or anything like that, since they've already done that with "Judas".

Been thru the album once only, and it's a "different" beast than the last couple of releases. Less "metal", less "gothic", more electronic/dance inspired and more 80's industrial sounding. This is actually closer to the sound of where the band started out, and that is not really as appealing to me on paper (I never enjoyed industrial/electronic metal) ... HOWEVER, what LotL has going for them are two-fold: incredible songwriting and Chris Harms. He is a superstar! I love his voice and the emotions he gets across. There are no ballads here (which is something they've in later years have become known for), but that doesn't mean the songs won't work in a lighter acoustic setting ... yes, I'm anticipating and hoping for a "Swan Songs 4" soon with songs from this and "Judas" :) Oh, and the bonus track on the digital version of the album is a cover of Roxette's "The Look", which is a fun thing to add to the album and fits well in with the dance/electronic late 80's / early 90's sound.

HAIL THE SUN - Mind Rider (single)
I'm assuming this is the first single from the next album, but it might just be a stand-alone thing. Either way, it's brilliant as always with these guys. Progressive Post-hardcore, somewhere between Circa Survive, Coheed & Cambria. Dance Gavin Dance and The Mars Volta, with a little bit more of a metal edge to it.

KATATONIA - Sky Void of Stars
Album of the year? I mean, I know we're only in January, but for the last month I've played this album multiple times each day. I've probably listened close to 75 times already. Album came out officially today, and I received my iTunes copy, my "regular" CD copy, and are still waiting on the LP as well as the digibook version that I've ordered. You can't have too much Katatonia in your life.

TEN - Something Wicked This Way Comes
Another great Ten album. Only through it twice but this is awesome. Not sure it's as perfect as last years album, but very solid.

A.C.T. - Polish, Reduce and Enlarge
First single from upcoming EP from these Swedish prog metal masters. Not quite a "new" song though, as this was released back in 2006 as Japanese bonus track on "Silence". It's still a great song, personally I hadn't heard the song before, so it makes me happy to hear it now. The SAGA meets DREAM THEATER meets Broadway style is obviously very strong here.

RIVERSIDE - I.D.Entity
When did Riverside begin to sound like A-ha? Ok, half-way kidding here ... although opener "Friend or Foe" has a strong A-ha vibe to it, and Mariusz sounds a lot like Morten Harket. Either way, this is beautiful. I know I've said before that I prefer the under-produced "raw"/organic sound of 2013's "Shrine of a new generation", but this polished (no pun intended) version of Riverside is awesome as well.

IQ40 / Forty Years of Prog Nonsense --

IQ celebrates their 40th year with another double live disc set ....... no bluray show from this one. Yet. I have not played it, waiting for the right moment to open it and indulge. If I'm not mistaken, this is a limited release, with only so many copies pressed. Ken can confirm this, but I'd jump on it pronto if you are an IQ fan.

Here is a review of the show itself when it was played live.

https://atthebarrier.com/2023/01/15/iq- ... ve-review/

WALK IN DARKNESS / Leaves Rolling in Time -
I discovered this band accidentally while browsing, and I'm not sure why I don't know of them. They have a few discs out, but this is the new one and supposedly the best.... Based on one You tube video I bit and bought the disc. I should like this. But I'm not sure why I can't get into it. I'm guessing that I've left the genre behind for good and cannot re-absorb it. It's Gothic / Symphonic with a female singer with a very good Italian voice, although with a thick accent. The main songwriter, and I'm guessing the man behind all the music and lyrics is a guy called SHAMAN and you can't see him as he wears a dark, black half-cloak with hood (ie. he is mysterious).
Anyway the music is not your typical pop / metal / growls / try to be like WT or Evanescence type band. This music is slowed down - almost proggy in a sense, and moves along sometimes at a slow, doomy pace.... whatever it is, I just can't dig into it. But you can check out their single off the disc here:

I don't know how much I like it yet, but Riverside at least deserves credit for actually changing up their sound over time. I respect them for that alone.
I'll be the judge of what's good and what isn't, thank you... ;)

Nerve End is kind of a jazz inflected djenty modern prog outfit. They're supposedly coming up on their first LP soon and they put this single out yesterday, which I very much enjoy.

I really enjoyed the ep that they released like 10 years ago. Really good stuff. The new songs have all been really solid. Looking forward to the full album.

Never heard of it before, but that's really nice. Interesting vocal style .. almost screaming in a Bjork kind-a-way?!

For me, today has 4 big releases that I've really been looking forward to:

Shores of Null - The Loss of Beauty
Ne Obliviscaris - Exul
Hanging Garden - The Garden
Marianas Rest - Auer

The only one I've listened to so far (twice) is "Auer" which is kicking my butt ... fantastic stuff. Doom-death/occasionally black/occasionally gothic metal mixed together.

I've been playing the NeO all day, their best since Citadel, the last one URN, was pretty forgettable and sounded horrible.

Interesting ... to me URN is their absolute best. I think there's so much going on their, but all held together by beautiful melodies and incredible musicianship ("controlled chaos"). I never had a problem with the production on it, so ...

Now, that said, I've been revisiting CITADEL quite a lot recently, as it's a brilliant record as well.

I'm now through EXUL for the first time, and I'm definitely liking it. It's the same "controlled chaos" that I really liked in URN, but it also has turned up the prog-rock influences and even goes into some "jazzy' territories here and there. I'm going to spend a lot of time with it in the coming months, as this is not an immediate album for sure, which honestly isn't a big surprise, as this is a band that demands attention all the way through. One gripe; the album kind of just ends - there seem to be something missing when it fades out. Perhaps it's just me, but I would have expected something more bombastic for the end.

I was positively impressed by the new Metal Church. I'm in the camp that felt that they should have thrown in the towel now (or at least got Munroe back if they really insisted on another go-around), but this song wasn't bad, and the singer kind of fits in fairly well.

Pyramaze was solid musically, but I don't find Terje a very interesting singer. Just bland ... Their logo still kicks ass (lol).

Todd La Torre is opposite situation: dude can sing with the best of them, but music is bland.

Teramaze: refuse to listen to it - mentioned here multiple times what a horrible person Dean is, so no reason to spend any time listening to his crap

TRANSATLANTIC / The Absolute Universe - (abridged version - 72 minutes)
I've been into this band big time lately due to my journey through Neal Morse band land ....... This is the shorter version of the unabridged version which is a 2-CD set....although so far my favorite from them is The Whirlwind, this one is no slouch. I admire a band who can release a CD with a 71- minute song on it and keep me interested all the way. To me this band is like the Prog Rock version of Dream Theater. I cannot wait to get my hands on a blu-ray show from this band.

URIAH HEEP / Acoustically Driven -
Back in the heyday of this band, I was a casual fan. I had some of the earlier vinyl releases from them, and stopped along the way somewhere ..... probably around the time singer David Byron left the band ....... somehow this band is still going, and with a different singer of course. Here we are stripped down instrument wise, toned down, and added in female singers, pipes, bongos, violins, well ..... you get the idea ... check it out here .......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSF99EE-7og

WOBBLER / Hinterland -
I am so late to the party with band it is not even funny. I saw them way back when Ken Golden was taking me to Nearfest, and they blew away with their live show, but was too into metal at the time to give them a chance, although with Knight Area I did for some reason. This is wonderful, 70s style Prog with Hammond Organ, Mellotron, flute and excellent vocals...... Ken has been trying all these years, but I finally bit and I'm floored by what I've been missing .......great stuff.

CYDEMIND / The Descent -
No one bit on their last release, some time ago which was called Erosion ...... they are a prog rock / metal / instrumental band with the violin as the lead instrument.
Sort of like a metal / prog rock instrumental Kansas if you will. Check them out here with their new release, called The Descent. .......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M72GMAKHoF8

HOLST / The Planets (plus The Asteroids) -
For the Classical music fan ...... so many orchestras have played this movement, it's not even funny. And sure, once you have heard a couple, there is no need to hear more .... even Michael Rome has used pieces from The PLanets on his solo discs....... but this is one of the better movements, played by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, and there is an extra bonus disc in there with The Asteroids, and the making of ....... simply stunning.

New Scar Symmetry! New album June 9th. The tune's good, but I was kind of hoping for more after so long, honestly.

Pretty much of the same opinion. I always REALLY liked the band, but never fell completely in love with them (while several of my friends were heads-over-heels with these guys). This sounds like what you'd expect from the band - nothing more, nothing less. It's great, actually really great, but it's not going to change my opinion on them.

I love UH. Funny enough, it took me many years to get into them, but once I did, I really loved them in all their shapes and forms. Yes, they've sure changed singers a lot, but most bands who've been around for that many years have had several line-up changes.

Just to recap:
David Byron - 9 studio albums (1969-1976)
John Lawton - 3 studio albums (1977 - 1979)
John Sloman - 1 studio album (1980)
Peter Goalby - 3 studio albums (1981-1985)
Bernie Shaw - 9 studio albums (1986 - present)

Honestly, I don't think that's too abnormal for a band with a 54 year history behind them to have gone through that amount of changes. The thing that I find most interesting though, is how consistent the band has sounded like in their music. It's still been quite the same style - sure, it's less "over the top" now, it's gotten a bit more polished (especially towards the end 80's/early 90's period) than when they started out, but it's still undeniably Heep.

Today's big releases (for me at least):

AD INFINITUM - Chapter III
I wasn't hooked on Chapter II at first, and it wasn't until everyone put it on their end-of-year lists I bothered to pick it up (which is strange considering how much I loved Chapter I). Chapter III is more of the same, but perhaps bit more melodic/poppy, and just really well done for the symphonic power metal genre. I could see myself spinning this considerably more than Chapter II.
https://youtu.be/3onA_XzUu8k (new single)

SERMON - Of Golden Verse
The debut album was a really nice surprise back in 2019, and this time around the band have turned up everything that was great about the debut ... the sound is still a unique mixture of progressive gothic doom (Katatonia, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Fields of Nephilim), but this time around I also hear tiny bits and pieces of Leprous, Vaura, some aggressive black/death metal, and even a goth-electronic The Cure meets Depeche Mode approach in places. It's super impressive and this has potential to end up VERY high on my list this year.

Vass/Katsionis - Cynical Silence
I enjoyed last year's debut album from the duo of Bob Katsionis (all instruments) and Billy Vass (vocals), as it was a solid "tribute" to the classic prog metal sound of Fates Warning, Queensryche, Conception, Shadow Gallery, Dream Theater, etc. with emphasis on strong melodies. The downfall of that album was Billy's voice, that sounded like someone emulating mid-period Ray Alder vocal lines, but with a potato in his mouth. Well, on "Cynical Silence" that annoying element has been amplified, and is now twice as unbearable as on the debut :( I unfortunately don't foresee myself coming back to this album much, which is a real shame considering how much I otherwise would have enjoyed it.

Besides the obligatory daily Katatonia-hour (or two, *LOL*), and the above mentioned Vass/Katsionis album, yesterday 100% (guess it makes it more like 90%) dedicated to the debut album from New Orleans band ANARETA, "Fear Not". This has to be one of the most original albums I've ever heard - so intense, so brutal, and yet so hauntingly beautiful. The band consists of a drummer, a bassist, a guitarist, a cellist, a viola player, and a violin player (okay, I'll be honest, I don't know the difference between a viola and a violin...). Musically this is dark, intense doom metal with black metal shrieks on top, perhaps in that sense a comparison could be Agalloch, although there's something less "post" about this, and musically the doom metal wins over the black metal in weight (I guess you could say it's "blackened doom" rather than "doom black"). Now, here's the kicker; thanks to the "non-metal" instruments mentioned, there's a distinct chamber music feel to this, perhaps an even 50/50 split, which makes this a very intriguing listen, and I made it through the 44 minute long album so many times yesterday, that you'd think I was going for a world record in listening to new music in one day, and each time I found something new to like. The music has a certain Celtic Frost/Triptykon appeal to it, thanks to it's darkness and how absolutely scary those shrieks are, mixed with the obvious classical music influences. Also, and I almost hate to say this because it easily can come off as misogynistic, but thanks to the fact that there are 4 women in the band (one of them being the lead vocalist), it's easy to compare with Danish band Konvent, who also straddles the edge between doom and black. One thing I've noticed in reviews of "Fear Not" is the mention of sludge - personally I don't hear this, but perhaps it's a mixture of the dissonant black influences, the extremely (!) raw production, and the fact that this is a NOLA band, that people immediately think of sludge?! Now, in the final song of the album, the majestic "Black Snake", I noticed this distinct violin-theme through the entire middle part of the tune, and I kept thinking I've heard that before, until suddenly it dawned upon me that it was from Pain of Salvation's "Road Salt One" album - do I think that Anareta have borrowed it from there? Nah, but perhaps it's a specific classic or folk melody, which both bands felt inspired by ... who knows?! Either way, Anareta has delivered a debut album which really pushes the boundaries of metal (I mean, "chamber metal", come on?), and I can't get enough of it.

TRANSATLANTIC / The Final Flight - Live at L'Olympia (3-CD / Bluray)

I finally got my hands on this one after waiting for some time to get some points at Amazon. Damn these TRansatlantic discs are very expensive no matter which one you buy..... I've decided to get this one as a finale to my Transatlantic journey, and it comes at good timing. This is a 3-CD / Bluray show of what is supposed to be their farewell tour, and it looks like the entire show of The Absolute Universe, a Whirlwind Suite, and a couple of songs from other discs, all in all a 3-hr show !!!! Absolutely fantastic that a band can put something like this out .......

The bluray show itself is simply marvelous, with video and audio quality at a superb level. The crowd is really into it, and it is amazing to watch some of these guys actually drumming along with Mike Portnoy with every break and intro.... I can't even follow along with this music is it so complex and disjointed, I don't know how they do it..... Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse are the stars of this show though, and they add Ted Leonard (Spocks Beard) as a back up singer / guitarst as well.

The music is absolutely first rate - and even though I'd put Neal Morse Band closer to DReam Theater than these guys, they can still hold their own in the riff dept. Mike Portnoy seems to be having as much fun as I've ever seen him, and his playing is just incredible here.

If this is indeed the end of Transatlantic, then they have gone out with a bang ...... a great show to end a great career, and I'm glad I finally jumped on board with them.

So much new stuff today ...

MMXX - The Next Wave
This is a 3 song EP of material that for some reason didn't make the debut album from 2022 of this doom/death band. Wonderful stuff though - the song featuring Mick Moss is one of my favorite tunes of the year so far.

METALLICA - 72 Seasons
Only listened once so far, but I like it. Love 'em or hate 'em ... I'm still a fan.

OVERKILL - Scorched
Can't wait to spend time with this one, as reviews I've read says it's better than 2019's "Wings of War".

VOIDCEREMONY - Threads of Unknowing
I loved their last (debut?) album 4 years ago. It's super technical prog-death blending old school Atheist, Death, Cynic, Pestilence etc. Haven't had a chance to listen to this yet, but can't imagine it's anything but great.

DØDHEIMSGARD - Black Medium Current
One play through and I dig it. It's kind of what I expected though, from this Norwegian avantgarde/prog black metal band. There are parts that reminds me of Arcturus, parts that scream Ulver, parts that has me thinking of Ved Buens Ende and yet again parts that fall in line with last years Dold Vorde Ens Navn. In essence, it sounds like Dødheimsgard. Many more listens await over the coming months.

There's a few more I'm looking forward to checking out and see if any of them might need to go on the "wish list":
Smoulder, 1782, Ashrain, Holy Moses

I think the new Overkill is their best in a long time, let me know what ya think! I hear a bit of the older style of Overkill that I love....

Spiritbox - The Void

They're just kinda...doing whatever they feel like. It rules. This one's got a lot of pop vibe woven through the heavy and I'm really enjoying it.

This might be the first time I've heard something from them that I kinda like. Not loving it, but it's way better than anything I've ever heard from them before.

The album starts out really strong, with 3 wonderfully amazing songs up front, then continues w some really good tunes, and I think it actually works all the way through until that absolute piece of turd at the end (Bag O' Bones). I could easily see this as a top 25 candidate of the year if they hadn't added that ridiculous tune there.

Yep. It's all very modern and Metalcore inspired, but not all of their stuff could really be considered metalcore. Eternal Blue is their only full album currently.

ATAVISTIA - Cosmic Warfare
Symphonic semi-progressive melo-death - think Wintersun's debut blended with some First Fragment. Lots of big symphonic melodies, and some awesome guitar playing and especially drumming. It's not nearly as technical nor classical inspired as First Fragment, and it's not as CoB-style melo-death inspired as Wintersun, but it hits on parts from both, and I really enjoy this. There's also a bit of the Finnish-style folk music creeping in as well, which makes for a nice addition to an already interesting sound.

I finally got around to listening to this and am very disappointed. It just seem very un-inspired to me. There are a couple of decent songs, and those are the singles that the band released videos for. The rest of it I just find very boring and lazy to me.. Much of it seems more hard rock than metal. They just seem to have lost their creative magic that once made me love them......

Luckily there are still bands around like Testament that still put out great metal and that still bring it album after album and still know how to crush their instruments.

I don't know ... there's something about the new album that I feel was missing in both "Hardwired..." and "Death Magnetic", both albums I actually really liked. It is stepping it up a notch, and just reminds me more of old Metallica, than anything on "Load"/"Reload"/"St.Anger". It's not quite on level with the selftitled (black) album, and obviously has nothing on the classics, but it's quite good for what it is.

I've seen people complain about songwriting, people complain about production, and people complain about the performances ... heck, I've even seen people complain about the artwork. At some point in time, you just gotta start laughing, as it seems to me people WILL find something to complain about, just because it's Metallica. It's like "We have to find a reason to dislike it, just to show how trve we are". Grow up guys!

Metallica 2023 obviously aren't going to sound like Metallica 1983, and I don't really want them to either. For me, "72 Seasons" is quite a good disc, and I've already listened to it probably ~15 times or so, which for as long an album as this is quite a lot this early in the game. The last week and a a few days it's been following me around on every run and car ride.

I actually put the latest two Testament albums on yesterday, "Brotherhood of the Snake" (2016) and "Titans of Creation" (2020) , and both are of course awesome.

But, and this isn't a negative thing, Testament have pretty much stayed close to the same formula since their inception, and they do this really well. Metallica has chosen to renew themselves often, and sometimes it's backfired horribly, but I feel that where they are now (with the last 3 albums) is a good place, where they combine their classic sound with a more "laid back" version of their music based in the NWOBHM sound they grew up with. Not every band needs to stick to what they know best and just deliver the same album over and over ... if that was how it was, music would become boring and stale very quickly.

I think the main problem I have with metallica these days is that James use to write some of the most awesome creative and sometimes complex riffs ever.... I just know that James is capable of so much more when it comes to writing creative hard-hitting riffs. You just don't get the crunch that James was known for on the newer stuff...James voice is great, I will say that, but he use to write some of the most awesome chugga chugga riffs ever, and I tend to look at that as the signature Metallica Sound. Sanitarium is a good example of a slow song, but still had that Metallica signature crunchy riff, and I loved it, even though it was a much slower Metallica song... There were plenty of them evident even on the Black Album. Even on the slow songs like Sad But True, they were still there, but I just don't hear them anymore and those hard hitting bad ass crunchy riffs is what made me love Metallica.

Right, if you're looking for complex riffs, you won't find it here. So with that in mind, Metallica 2023 isn't what they were 30-40 years ago. But to me, that doesn't mean that their current music isn't great - it's just different.
