Love Beast in Black. They remind me alot of the formula of Eclipse(also a band I love). Sometimes the verses don't stand out, but you always know that an amazing hooky chorus is right around the cornerintroclaus wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 1:18 pmIt's been 3 weeks or more since last post on what new stuff I've picked up, so here goes:
BEAST IN BLACK - Moonlight Rendezvous
Guilty pleasure - total cliche 80's hard rock mixed with power metal. Don't judge, but I enjoy this stuff.

I Built The SkyMardoch wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 10:35 amSpiritbox - Eternal Blue
Probably the hottest thing in metalcore right now? Female fronted progressive djenty metalcore, touching perfection on each genre label I would put on them. This album's got my dopamine stuck in the ON position today. The only thing that I don't like about it is that my favorite single of theirs, Blessed Be, didn't get put on it.

I Built the Sky (with Jake Howsome Lowe) - Coalesce
Really good guitar-driven instrumental stuff. Djenty heritage, tons of chops and heavy riffage, but most of all good songs.

I mean...I gave myself a choice between the new Rage, the new Brainstorm, the new Alien Weaponry, the new Pentakill and the new Spiritbox, and I went with everything but Spiritbox. A lot of hype, but in my eyes, it didn't deliver.introclaus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 12:54 pmI Built The SkyMardoch wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 10:35 amSpiritbox - Eternal Blue

I really like the new Rage. Yeah, it's that Riot/League of Legends metal disk. I had to laugh, unlike the first disk, which had Bissonette, Sherinian, and a few other players credited, for the most part, most of the instruments are credited to 'Riot Staff'. It's a blend between melodic metal and some other modern influences. Jorn doesn't sing every track. There's some Noora from Battle Beast and other singers I don't immediately recognize. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXtaMAN9zX4introclaus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 4:01 pmI really like the new Rage. What’s Pentakill? Is that the project w Jorn? If so, first single didn’t do much but I might have to check out entire disc…
Whhaaattt!? Courtney is one of my favorite vocalists in all of metal right now. I mean I know our tastes in this arena diverge significantly, but I'm still more than a little surprised. I agree that the I Built the Sky material could really benefit from vocals. They did a single with Andy Cizek (if I'm remember correctly) that was really killer.introclaus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 12:54 pmI Built The SkyMardoch wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 10:35 amSpiritbox - Eternal Blue

I’m trying my best with this one, but I didn’t like any of their previous outputs even if Glenn praised the heck out of “Where Owls…” and tried to convince me into liking it. The new one is sitting a little better w me but still not convincing me to push purchase. The intro sounds like the intro to last Black Crown Initiate (who RoN actually sounds quite a lot alike on this disc), there’s a bunch of BtBaM moments (but the new BtBaM is just on a completely different level) and unfortunately way too much Devin Townsend worship over this album. I’ll give it one or two more spins later but not really expecting my opinion to be changed.Mardoch wrote: ↑Fri Sep 24, 2021 2:08 pmI haven't yet checked out the new Aeon Zen, but the new Rivers of Nihil (The Work) is amazing. It's everything I could've wanted from a followup to Where Owls Know My Name.

One of my friends recently sent a link to a playthrough video and that was my first time listening to them. Killer stuff!introclaus wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 11:31 am
ETERNITY'S END - Deathrider
Second single from upcoming album, and second release this week with the amazing Christian Muntzer on guitar. This is what Judas Priest' "Painkiller" or Hammerfall's "Glory to the Brave" would (should?) sound like if done by a tech metal band. In all honesty, it brings me back pretty close to the feeling I had when I first listened to Lost Horizon's legendary debut album twenty years ago. The playing skills here are insane, and the song itself is absolutely wonderful.

Wasn't sure what this would be like without Sean on Drums? My interest is peaked though. Definitely would pursue this release after this track.CYNIC - Mythical Serpents
First single from new album. Besides a one off single three years ago this is first sign of “life” since 2015’s “Kindly Bent …” album. Where that one was a prog rock album in many ways, this sounds more like a mix between dreamy prog rock and metal. Could be really good for sure. I played this song like 20 times in a row…

Just listened to the new AZ - transversal. It smokes!!! Immediately clicking with me.I haven't yet checked out the new Aeon Zen
I tried, but I've never enjoyed Andy Kravijaca's voice, and I feel like he is holding this back as well.Hearing Aid Man wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 11:40 pmJust listened to the new AZ - transversal. It smokes!!! Immediately clicking with me.I haven't yet checked out the new Aeon Zen
I'm sad that Olly left the band, but if the new record is full of tracks like the singles they've put out it'll be a high bar for them.introclaus wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 9:48 amMONUMENTS - Lavos
To be honest, I haven't really been a big fan of these UK djenters much, except I thought their 2014 album "The Amanuensis" was really strong. I checked out the new single and was very positively impressed - enough to purchase it. Reminds me of the early days of djent but crossing nicely over into more modern styles with some progressive metalcore phrasings thrown in.

I wouldn’t know their guitarists from each other so it’s not a big deal to me.Mardoch wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 2:42 pmI'm sad that Olly left the band, but if the new record is full of tracks like the singles they've put out it'll be a high bar for them.introclaus wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 9:48 amMONUMENTS - Lavos

I missed this one when you originally posted it and just found it in a roundabout manner, but this is great. Tech death is usually plagued by total ass sounding vocals, but this band has no such issues. The cleans are great and the distorted vocals are also very good. I'm definitely going to buy this album when it comes out.introclaus wrote: ↑Sat May 22, 2021 9:44 amOBSIDIOUS - Iconic
Great tech-death in the vein of Obscura, Beyond Reality, Alkaloid, etc. (it's actually 3 ex-Obscura members behind this). Unfortunately only a stand-alone single, but man, it's killer. The clean vocals are better than 99% of the ones normally used in the genre. Thanks to Glenn for pointing them out to me.

Agreed, this is one of my most looking-forward-to albums of the coming months (? year ?).Mardoch wrote: ↑Wed Oct 13, 2021 2:36 pmI missed this one when you originally posted it and just found it in a roundabout manner, but this is great. This is some intense stuff! Definitely an interesting listen.ARCHSPIRE - Bleed the Future
The most intense 31 minutes of music this year. There are more rhythm shifts and more notes being played here than in Dream Theater's entire catalogue put together (well ....)!!! I don't expect this to be everyone's cup of tea, so to speak, but for those who can handle it, this album is a clear winner in my book, and with every single spin I am loving it more and more.

Only one of the singles are available so far for purchase (at least through) iTunes … I’ve had it for a week or so and obviously love it (it’s doom, it’s melodic and it’s a bunch of my old buddies …). I have one complaint and it’s gonna sound stupid - I love Stefan’s voice but his lisp has always annoyed me and still does. A shame because he is a wonderfully gifted vocalist.Hearing Aid Man wrote: ↑Thu Nov 18, 2021 11:39 pmDidn't see any mention of New Memory Garden. New CD out in December...
