I think what sets me and some of you apart here is that the standard prog metal stuff to me has gotten very stale and that’s just not where I find the for-me-interesting-stuff these days. I know a lot of you still love new stuff in the trad prog genre, and that’s great. But for me it isn’t where my head is at these days. I want to see the future of the genre, not bands doing what we’ve seen others do hundreds of times before. A few trad prog releases do catch my ear each year, but it’s few and far between. In later years the progressive side of metal core, djent and post-hardcore genres have given me a lot of new inspiration, and the entire “next-gen prog” scene is super inspiring I think.

About the heaviness of a band like Unprocessed or Port Noir: It doesn’t have to be overly “metal” to be “heavy” - that has more to do with emotions and lyrics and atmosphere. A distorted loud guitar doesn’t mean heavy to me. The way Unprocessed does it is heavy in its own way I think.

As for the new Seventh Wonder - it’s a rehash of a style heard a million times before, the production is quite poor, both Andreas bass and Andreas keyboard needs to step it up. For someone who loves this band soooooo very much, it’s painful to listen to sometimes, and it definitely doesn’t excite and inspire me in the same way Unprocessed or Port Noir does.

I’m honestly just looking for where the prog “metal” genre can go next, and I don’t think it’s another 7W or Vanden Plas album that’ll do that… at least not for me.
All of this. There's a lot of obvious metal heritage stuff floating around that's not really metal anymore that's phenomenal. Unprocessed and Polyphia are two very obvious examples of this, and in a completely different direction so is Thank You Scientist. And there's a whole new sound of modernity, some of which started with the 2010s djent explosion, that's still evolving and picking a ton of interesting new sonic directions...like Plini for example here. The cool new ways heavy jazz is coming around and stealing from metal (thinking Tigran Hamasyan), and vice versa, also lights my brain up like a Christmas tree.

We're on really well tread territory here, but it's the Progressive vs progressive argument again, and while I do still cherish the former what I'm really chasing is the latter. I also still want it to be more metal than not, but when it's kinda light and still gives me stank face, well I still got stank face so it's good with me.

I’ve listened to this disc so many times in the past week that I know it by heart. Heck, even my son knows it now so much that he picks out which of the songs to listen to in the car (he knows it’s a lost battle so he might at least have some input on which of them we will be listening to).
I don't know why I didn't see that the album purchase links were in the YT descriptions, but I've finally bought it and holy crap it's excellent. Gold is an appropriate name for it.
I tried to give "unprocessed" a chance, but I just can't stomach the vocals, just too radio and modern sounding for my ears.........Also, seems more rock than metal, but maybe there are other songs that are more metal....
Obviously vocals are like...the most highly subjective piece of the music listening experience, but I love this guy's voice. He's really a perfect match for the music they want to make. For me that's the second most important thing. The other is simply that I like their tone/timbre. Some vocalists I just hate because their voices' grate on my ears (Elliott Coleman lol). Others I don't really love but I let it slide because it matches the music well...early PtH is in this camp honestly, but I love Rody's voice nowadays.

Onto some new stuff from recent weeks that I missed.

Temporally displaced new music:

Todd's son is really rubbing off on me. He keeps throwing me tech death that I really enjoy, which is a genre that is often impenetrable to me. And on that subject the new Exocrine is disgusting. Tech death that's a fun listen is on the rare side for me, but these dudes make it.
https://uniqueleaderrecords.bandcamp.co ... ybrid-suns

By a similar token the new Revocation is also a monster. Less fun, more brutal. That's got its place, too.
https://revocationband.bandcamp.com/album/netherheaven

I've also finally purchased the new Kardashev and it's beautiful. I'll file it right next to Rivers of Nihil for that atmospheric proggy death metal.
https://kardashev.bandcamp.com/album/liminal-rite

Parius is a very Between the Buried and Me inspired outfit making some cool music that's prog but otherwise difficult to peg a genre to:
https://parius.bandcamp.com/album/the-s ... hout-space

And I also discovered this super heavy metalcore outfit Allt. There's nothing super proggy here, but the purity and clarity of execution still hits me in the good spot.

Going to ProgPower Europe in two weeks where Seventh Wonder is headlining, but I'm sorry, it's the band I'm looking least forward to see. It doesn't give me anything. I'm with Claus here, most of the releases I enjoy these days are not traditional ProgMetal. The bands I'm really looking forward to see at ProgPower is Meer, Vulkan, Von Hertzen brothers and Mother of millions.
Seventh Wonder live is amazing! Even if you don't like their studio albums, one can't help but stand their with their jaw open watching them blaze through instrumental passages. And of course Tommy, being the best singer in prog-metal(in my opinion), is amazing to listen to live....There are bands that I never cared for when it comes to studio releases. For example, I've never been a huge Rush fan, but I love their live show because they are just so amazing to watch in a live setting.... that's what's great about live shows. I remember a few bands I saw at the first 2 prog powers that I wasn't a big fan of, but enjoyed the hell out of their live performances....

I’ve seen 7W live multiple times; I used to be their manager. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the new album is really bland as far as what they have the potential to actually do. These last two discs have been less than hoped for and I would be perfectly fine not hearing those songs live.

Agreed with this, EXCEPT the part about Elliott Coleman. You know how much I love Good Tiger - and I actually hear a lot of their pop-prog style in Unprocessed.

Love Exocrine and Kardashev.
I gave Revocation one spin but not too convinced yet - will try once more.
Never heard of Parius but will check it out.

A new Circles single from a few days ago! Feels very pop structured but that doesn't put me off. The Aussie prog scene really produced some great acts that went in all kinds of directions.

I truly wish I loved Good Tiger, which is to say...found Elliott tolerable. I'm still a big fan of The Safety Fire. Their guitar work is like no one else's really.

New Ascendia today, too. It's good, but I'm not sure they have a guiding light on what their style should be right now. That's not really a problem, but it could become one.

Much more melodic and "happy" than I expected based on the description and the fact that they are on Willowtip. I like it. Will definitely keep this in mind for when it's released. Thanks for the heads up.

Singles:

TRIBULATION - Hamartia
Sounds like the last few albums, which is awesome. From a band that once sounded like a Dissection-clone, to where they are now, they've come a long way. Definitely have their own sound now.
https://youtu.be/qK3eHctm8z4

UNPROCESSED - Berlin (English version)
That was a bit of a let-down. Not only does the song not flow as well in English, it also seem like the vocals are underproduced and there's a wet blanket over this that wasn't on the original album version in German. Oh well ... completist and all, I had to have it.
https://youtu.be/KfmtS1U_p9I (original, German, version)

Albums:

WOLFHEART - King of the North
Melo-death meets Finnish gloom - somewhere between Amorphis, Sentenced (old) and In Flames ... a few dips into the Amon Amarth "battle metal" formula I could do without, but otherwise great stuff.
https://youtu.be/BVY4PnnHhzA

BEHEMOTH - Opvs Contra Natvram
Only listened once but it's good, not amazing. I mean, by now we know what we're getting, which is blackened death metal with a symphonic/orchestral edge to it. It's incredibly well-produced, well-performed, well-written ... and completely without surprises. Also, am I the only one who finds it hilarious that these guys are using "v"'s for everything, so shortly after Machine Head released an album using "ø"'s for everything?
https://youtu.be/4wUeHeqIJLw

ELECTRIC CALLBOY - Tekkno
I'm still trying to wrap my head around how the word "Eskimo" was bad, but "Callboy" isn't ... either way, I don't care what they call themselves. Musically it's "fun" metal core with LOTS of pop elements, but also a certain quality which makes sure it doesn't all end up being a joke.
https://youtu.be/Vf3LqQluWag

SPIRITUS MORTIS - The Great Seal
Doom metal of the great kind - dark, brooding, and with lots of melody. Think bands such as Year of the Goat / Trouble / Warning all blended together, which a singer that sounds quite a good deal like the first mentioned bands Tomas Sabati. Their previous albums were hit and miss, and I honestly only love their 2016 "The Year is One" (which is a wonderful mixture of Sabbath, Trouble, Candlemass with the ex-Reverend Bizarre vocalist), so I'm happily impressed by this new one, and their new vocalist. And, nope, that name (Great Seal) has nothing to do with Riot's mascot ...

Chaosbay - 2222
I didn't think they were going to sell it on Bandcamp, gave up and imported it from Germany, and now it's available digitally lol. No matter, this album smokes. It's kinda like if melodic rock and djent had a baby? There's not a lot that sounds quite like these folks and I'm a huge fan.

I don’t remember ever checking them out before but this is really good. Reminds me of Danish band Siamese in their very clear pop melodies infused with heavy stuff (in this case djent, in Siamese’s case metalcore). Super poppy.

RING OF FIRE - Storm of the Pawns (single)
Holy smokes! Mark Boals is on fire (no pun intended) and damn this tune is amazing. Progressive, part neo-classic, progressive, symphonic, progressive, bombastic and did I mention progressive? I had not expected this. First few times thru I felt it to be very disjointed and couldn’t even figure out if I liked it, but I kept
Going back and now I completely love this tune. Can’t wait for full album.

My first reaction was that without Tony MacAlpine, this isn't RoF. But..... I enjoy almost everything Boals puts out there, so still intrigued. Excited to hear more for sure!

Meh, RoF is Kuprij and Boals to me, so whoever plays guitar can be whoever Frontiers decides to throw at ‘em (currently it’s Aldo Lonobile from Secret Sphere and he does a wonderful job here).

Check out Rosespire!

There is pretty much zero information about the band on the web. Near zero. I think from the YouTube playrhroughs it may be a one man show.

Think Greyhaven mixed with Chiaroscruro with a modern production. Really impressive.

I think music is okay - kind of along the lines of Soen but not nearly as interesting.

Vocals are horrendous though. Gosh, on some songs he is not just struggling, it practically sounds like he has given up on even trying to hit the right notes. Damn :(

Production is very “homemade” as well, and really doesn’t do them any favors.

Sorry, hard pass for me.

A few disappointing singles and some great ones in the past week:

THEM - Retro 54
Second single from upcoming album and I’m not sure what to think to be honest. Oh well- I’ll wait for full album.
https://youtu.be/CcVZk7BUlek

LOCH VOSTOK - Black Neon Manifesto
After the greatness of their last album I was hoping for something equally amazing. However this is an 8+ minute tune that just meanders aimlessly. From what I can read on the interwebs this is a leftover from the album sessions and it sounds like it.
https://youtu.be/4Xjs3t-mj8w

TIME, THE VALUATOR - Glow
Third single from next album, and I must admit I’m getting very annoyed with the band for releasing their singles in the way they do (on iTunes at least). First single was 1 song at standard price. Second single was double the price because they packaged it with the first single in a bundle. And now? You guessed right, a bundle with all three singles. So now I’ve purchased same songs multiple times. And I’m sure when full album comes out they are going to make me pay for ‘em all again. The song itself is fine, but a bit more electronic than I had hoped for and i think I’ve come to the conclusion that their new singer, while good, is just a level below their original one. Perhaps I’m just annoyed about their labels marketing scheme though…
https://youtu.be/bkFQdXUfBOA

AVATARIUM - Stockholm
Really looking forward to the album as this is another classy tune from them. Melodic and melancholic doom with female vocals and progressive touches.
https://youtu.be/BTOU2FZGCWw

CANDLEMASS - Sweet Evil Sun
Yeah it’s better than first single from album, but it’s not how I want my Candlemass … vocals are way too forced. I can’t believe they got rid of Mats Leven for this - oh well.

OBSIDIOUS - Lake of Afterlife
Third single from new album and it’s amazing. I’ve said it a few times now, but this is what Trivium would sound like if they were a tech death band. Melodic, technical, and just so damn cool.

An EP:

SKELATOR - Blood Empirr
Nope, nowhere as great as their last album. Bland heavy/power metal and vocals on first song sucks. Lots of Manowar meets Priest on this EP but not very interesting. Loved last album but I’ll listen before purchasing going forward.

A few full lengths:

DROPKICK MURPHYS - This Machine Still Kills Fascists
Been a fan of these guys for many years now and always enjoy their albums. New one is different I feel. Less “Celtic folk punk” and more in a “Americana singer-songwriter meets 60/70’s rock’n’roll with a punky/heavy spirit” (bluegrass, Johnny Cash, Elvis, VolBeat … ). Not saying it’s bad, but after four spins I still haven’t formed an opinion. That said, it still sounds like DM (my son came in the room and immediately said “that’s Dropkick”, so …).
https://youtu.be/igrENGM1NTI

TANKARD - Pavlov’s Dawgs
Only one spin so far, but it’s Tankard, so you know what to expect. German thrash metal with great guitar riffs, lots of attitude and some old school fun thrown in for good measure. Love it!
https://youtu.be/6W1c3HaVGLQ

MISCREANCE - Convergence
Old style of tech/prog death … think Atheist, Death, Pestilence. I’m a sucker for this style so obviously I’m digging the heck out of it.

Unprocessed - Gold
The next generation of prog metal bands are ready to take over, and this is going to be one of those at the front. This album is blowing my mind … so amazing! I liked the last album of theirs but on “gold” they’ve stepped it up a hundred notches. Incredible!

UNPROCESSED - Gold
Already mentioned these guys, but DAMN it's amazing. The next generation of progressive metal is right here, right now.
https://youtu.be/XvHQDcpaM8Q
Damn I didn't know they had a new album coming out. I'm stoked for this!
I went on a mini-vacation this past week with the kiddo hiking throughout the western North Carolina mountains… lots of time spent in the car driving on the Blue Ridge Mt Parkway and listening to “Gold” on repeat. It’s my sons favorite album of the year and it’s just an incredible album from start to finish. So amazing!

Parius is a very Between the Buried and Me inspired outfit making some cool music that's prog but otherwise difficult to peg a genre to:
https://parius.bandcamp.com/album/the-s ... hout-space
Much more melodic and "happy" than I expected based on the description and the fact that they are on Willowtip. I like it. Will definitely keep this in mind for when it's released. Thanks for the heads up.
Album was released today, and I purchased it and have now listened to it twice. Great great stuff. You actually hit the nail on the head with BtBaM, but only as so far the "Coma Ecliptic" album goes (yes, the melodic one haha), since I think that's the one "The Signal Heard..." sounds most like. I also hear a bit of Devin (ugh!), Rush, Coheed, The Dear Hunter, and some other stuff I haven't figured out yet. Thank you for pointing this one out.

I think I've figured it out; there's a part of "The Signal" which sounds so much like Dream Theater's "The Mirror" I can't help sing along ... also, there are certain songs where they cross over to a bit of Voivod and even a bit of Beyond Creation (although never going full-on-tech-death).

Architects - A New Moral Low Ground
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9mA1iLE-UY

It's...ok. It's packed full of noise, like industrial static sounding, and it just kinda gives me a headache. The riffage itself is good enough, but. Not really grabbing me here.

Yeah - they are now 4-for4 on this upcoming album and not in a good way. Looks like it’ll be a disappointing album after how absolutely fantastic the last one was.

RIOT CITY - Electric Elite
Finally been able to take a break from the Parius album and instead been spending all day with the new RIOT CITY. Great old school heavy/speed metal, somewhere in between Judas Priest (“Screaming…”), Grim Reaper (“See you in Hell”), Riot (“Thundersteel”), Agent Steel (“Unstoppable Force”), Liege Lord (“Master Control”), Amulance (“Feel the Pain”), Scanner (“Hypertrace”), Helloween (“Walls…”) Queensryche (“EP”/“The Warning”), and Crimson Glory (st). If you like this style, the new RIOT CITY is the very best you can get your hands on in 2022.

Only one album this week, and it's far from metal ... my guess is that only Mads (Bumzen) is sharing my love for this one.

TOVE LO - Dirt Femme
I really like about half of her songs in general, and only album I've truly loved from start to finish was "Lady Wood", which by now is 6 years old. Her last 2 albums weren't convincing me fully. That's not to say they were bad, as both "Sunshine Kitty" and "Blue Lips" had some cool songs here and there, but they just felt they were missing a bit of the "danger" that was all over "Lady Wood". With "Dirt Femme", Tove's special brand of danceable pop/r'n'b regain some of that edge that I felt was missing, and this time around there's only a few songs that I don't care for. Tunes like "2 Die 4" (reusing the theme from the old classic "Popcorn" song), "True Romance", "How Long", "Kick in the Head", "No One Dies from Love" and "Suburbia" are all totally awesome. In my opinion, Tove Lo is what Beyonce would sound like if she possessed a raw dangerous edge or if Lady Gaga wasn't a fake media personality with little seriousness to her ...

Single:

MOLYBARON - Vampires
I loved their last disc, so obviously got this single. It's good, but not great. I'm hoping the upcoming album retains more of the cool vibes from "The Mutiny" rather than this.
https://youtu.be/aD27zlnH-n8

Full albums:

AVANTASIA - A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society
Well, it's Avantasia. You've got Kiske, Martin, Atkins, Scheepers, Jansen, Catley, Lande, Tate ... what more do you want? Perhaps some better songs? Perhaps less of Sammet? It's not bad, but it's not one of the best Avantasia albums either.
https://youtu.be/dj50YIwoFLc

AVATARIUM - Death, Where's Your Sting
Great, great, great stuff. This is going to end up very high on my year-end-list. Loving it! Too short though (45 minutes). Melodic doom metal with a bluesy vibe.
https://youtu.be/AH9asih2HCI

ARCHITECTS - the classic symptoms of a broken spirit
Based on the first 3 singles I was expecting this to be a disappointing album, but luckily not only are the rest of the songs really good, but the three songs I didn't like actually works well inside the flow of the full album. Architects is one of the best metalcore bands out there, something their last album ("For those that wish to exist") showed clearly, and while the new one is way stronger than I expected, I do also feel that the best songs here are those that reminds me the most of their last disc.
