I didn't see any discussion of this album on the forum, so I thought I'd post something. It came out in 2018 but it's a fairly recent discovery for me. It's a fantastic album and definitely retroactively belongs in my top five of that year.
The band is known as "avant-garde metal," but that descriptor doesn't clarify much. Compared to their early work, I found _Marrow_ to be quite accessible. The music is largely built out of blocks of chromatic riffage that alternately lumber and lay waste. Bass is light-footed and up in the mix. The vocals aren't at all histrionic, as they could be in their early days. The lyrics are whip-smart and synesthetic, conjuring up emotions with form and color. Some of these songs are actually a bit sentimental. All in all, it's a complex, sophisticated album that took me a few listens to really digest and appreciate.
