Let's get some discs ready for 2019 lists......

Post by LarryD » Wed Nov 06, 2019 10:50 am

I'm sure that Glenn and Claus are working on their Top 50 lists for the year ......... in the meantime, can we get some lists going on 2019 releases so we can start building our Top 10 lists ? Just looking for the 2019 releases we have so far if anyone is keeping track ? Thanks in advance ..........

Neal Morse - Great Adventure
Devin Townsend - Empath
Avantasia - Moonglow
Evergrey - The Atlantic
Stone Leaders (?)
Appearance of Nothing - In Times of Darkness
Hemina - Night Echoes
Leverage - Determinus
Mind Key - Aliens in Wonderland
Neal Morse - Jesus Christ the Exorcist (busy dude, as Flying Colors ALSO had a new one)
Flying Colors
Turilli / Lione Rhapsody
WIthin Temptation - Resist

Right now Devin is probably my fave of the year, followed closely by Arch/Matheos, Vanden Plas and Darkwater. Still waiting for something to singularly blow my socks off this year.

I also have a buttload of discs sitting in a pile still to listen to at home, including Ray Alder and Flying Colors, so something may still hit me.

***Jay --- great list, forgot about Neal Morse / The Great Adventure (kudos to Glenn for playing that one for me) ...... I'm surprised at Devin being your #1 ...... such a tough disc for me to get through ......one of his toughest ? Tell me about Appearance of Nothing ..... didn't care for the last one, have not heard a peep out the newest one, this band always flies under the radar ..... how is the latest one ? I also forgot about the Evergrey ...... good call......

It's.... OK. Nothing to write home about. It's been many months since I spun it, but I seem to recall it feeling a bit lacking compared to their prior efforts.

And as for Devin.... What I love about it is that he pulls all his different "sounds" together into a single album again. Feels like he's been doing different focused projects for so long that he was overdue for a massive blender of all the anarchistic emotions that makes up DEVIN, and this album works in spades on that level. It also is the single most beautiful CD package I have seen, so..... There's that. :)

If you want to be that guy (although Tom C already told me the same thing) I guess the digital was released in 2018.
However, the cd release was delayed until 2/22/19 if I remember correctly.

I already talked about it in my 2018 list so for me it is not a 2019 release but I don’t mind you thinking it is *lol*

Opeth – In Cauda Venenum
I was just playing this yesterday for the first time, and I've got to say.... This is REALLY solid. Far and away the most interesting of the "modern" Opeth albums. Almost certainly a top 10 for me, which at this point in their careers genuinely surprises me.

This has been a really slow year for me. For some reason, there hasn't been much that have been obvious candidates for top 10. However, I love starting to see other's lists as it reminds me of releases I need to go back to. I often discover that I have missed lots of great releases once I start going through them this time of year. I'll be surprised if I don't put Arch Matheos as #1 but beyond that I don't know what else will make my list.

I’m confused ... wasn’t the original idea just to list releases that came out in 2019? You already mentioned that one once yourself, so why would anyone else mention it?

Preliminary list

Soilwork - Verklsomething
Queensryche - the verdict
Stone Leaders
Anthem - Nucleus (I know this isn't technically new material but fuck me is it good)
Kawn
Gloryhammer
Majestica
Tanith
Dream Troll (might be aoty)
M I God
Merging Flare (best PM disc of the year)
Turilli/Lione
Gygax
Ravenous EH
Wilderun
Dimhav

This will be whittled down eventually.
So -that's- where the humidifier went.

Just getting around to Pattern-Seeking Animals (with Ted Leonard, Jimmy Keegan, and Dave Meros of Spocks Beard) today and it's coming in pretty strong. I actually am enjoying it more than the last SB. It's got more of a Flying Colors vibe to it, but with better vocals. Several songs have a more mainstream vibe to them, but work within the confines of the disc as a whole.

Solid album that could sneak into a top 10.

I really don't have a list to speak of as I wasn't terribly impressed with much of anything this year. However, I did place some orders this week for stuff recommended here. I picked up both Noveria, Divided Multitude, Dreamkeeper, a prog band named Strange Conversations, Ark Ascent. So maybe one or two of those will hit with me.

I really only thoroughly enjoyed Alder, Darkwater and MI GOd for 2019.

*** You just listed 3 discs in my Top 10 ....... :) So strange you started off loving Alder and then got cold to it ...... I wasn't originally that interested in it, then it ended up on my Top 10 list.........

MI God really should have fired you up though ....... I know your tastes are changing towards Prog ( I think ), but I'm surprised that one of those discs you listed didn't floor you......
That said - If the MI God didn't floor you, I don't think the Noveria will either ..... another disc in my Top 10 ........ it should at least kick your ass initially even though it might not have staying power for you ..... for me, I can't enough of the dude's voice, and the urgency with which this bands plays....... think some sort of hybrid of SX and DGM with a pissed off Zak Stevens on vocals ......

Oh yeah, I gotta add one more that may have gone unnoticed here since I haven't seen them mentioned elsewhere...Prime Creation - Tears of Rage. They are squarely of the Noveria, MI God, Nocturnal Rites, Pyramaze sound. I ordered that as well. Larry, I think this one is for you too.

MIGod was my no.1 for the year till Ray came out and now they're kinda tied for me with no clear winner. Darkwater is very close behind. I'm hoping the ones I just ordered shake up my year a bit. I'm all about the melody and feels anymore, metal or prog or both.
