The latest Progressive/Tech Death Metal releases ...
Here's a couple of the latest prog/tech death metal releases that I really love - since I know this isn't a genre that most here are into, I decided to just put these 3 albums into one post instead of making 3 individual ones
HATH - Of Rot and Ruin
This was recommended by a co-worker the other day and I'm liking it quite a lot. It reminds me a good deal of old school Opeth (when they were great) such as "My Arms Your Hearse", "Still Life" and even "Blackwater Park" to a certain extent ... it mixes prog death with symphonic black and melo-death. Also, it touches on some of the same elements that Slugdge hits, which is awesome, as Slugdge is one of those bands that I've really gotten into lately (thanks to the same co-worker).

ALLEGAEON - Apoptosis
I've always had a soft spot for bands like Allegaeon, never really pushing the boundaries too far, but comfortably delivering first rate music within their given genre: in this case it's prog death that sounds very much like what we're used to from bands like Obscura, Psycroptic, Rivers of Nihil, Inferi etc. It's not original, but it has all the right elements that makes you appreciate every second of the album (plenty of incredible musicianship, lots of nice classical styled/flamenco styled interludes, and packing a good solid punch).

and I've saved the best for last ...
EQUIPOISE - Demiurgus
This album is amazing and I'm hard pressed at imagining any prog/tech death album better than this in 2019. It is so over-the-top technical, so over-the-top fast/speedy/brutal/yet-melodic that it's borderlining to the point of ridiculousness ... often times I'm laughing at how amazing these musicians are and how much "excess" they are playing with. I want to say that this is the most "flamboyant" display of technical ability I've heard since Spiral Architect and there are actually times where the bass playing reminds me of that band quite a lot. Musically however this is way more brutal, so those hoping for A Sceptics Universe Pt 2 should rethink right this moment .. this is more like Necrophagist meets Beyond Creation (same bassist btw...) meets Gorod.

I’m not a big fan of death vocals but that music is awesome. Love how they have those short instrumentals that are like Al Di Meola pieces and then they go right back to the brutal stuff again. Crazy.introclaus wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2019 7:11 pm

Not sure if it was from this post or another that someone mentioned Obscura but their new one is great also.
Thanks for posting these.

Agreed on the short instrumental parts - those really are something. In fact, those kind of draw a straight line right back to the early days of the whole prog/tech death genre when Cynic and Atheist were doing this (the third Atheist album was all about this), so while Equipoise has a somewhat “new” take on the genre they aren’t afraid of linking to that masters and looking beyond the metal scene either.venidominefan wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 9:44 pmI’m not a big fan of death vocals but that music is awesome. As for Obscura, I know I mentioned them in my end-of-year-review http://www.pmrising.com/pm/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11101 at #20

Thanks Claus. I've been getting into this genre lately. I have the Allegaeon, but just got it so haven't spun it enough. I found the other 2 on Bandcamp and added them to my wishlist. I'm listening to them now.

Not huge on the Hath, but the Allegaeon is great.
I will check out the Equipoise, as it sounds right up my alley. Thanks

I listened once through Hath and Equipoise. The Hath was OK, but the Equipoise was insanely great. I can definitely hear Spiral Architect in the music. The vocals are pushing the limit of what I can tolerate, but the music is very special. I'll be buying the Equipoise soon and will keep listening to Hath. On my first listen I didn't pick up on the Opeth vibe, but I'll queue it up again soon.

Yep. I too am completely on board with the Equipoise. Absolutely fantastic.
