Vaura "Sables"

Post by introclaus » Thu Mar 21, 2019 5:11 pm

VAURA has so far been the only real "post-black-metal" / "black-gaze" / "shoe-gaze" band that I ever cared about - I''ve never liked Deafheaven, Agalloch or Alcest enough to dig deeper into the genre, so perhaps Ive been missing out on some good stuff, but I do really like the 2 first albums by Vaura (Selenelion, 2012 and The Missing, 2013).

With that said, the band is about to unleash their third album "Sables" within the coming month, and the first 2 singles from it are now available, and all I can say is "what the heck happened here"? Gone are anything that remotely resembles black metal or blackgaze - this is melancholic prog rock / gothic rock / indie rock with a metal edge, more in the vein of Katatonia, Anathema, To/Die/For, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Depeche Mode, Poets of the Fall and even a little bit of the style heard on the last Cynic album ("kindly bent to free us" - which everyone except for me seemed to hate, so there's that ;)). I'm very shocked by how little of the style from the first two albums there's left in this new album (the closest they've come to this before would be in the song "Incomplete Burning" from "The Missing", but even that had the black metal guitars in the background). To be honest, the two new songs however, hints at an album that could end up really high on my year end list, as this is music that truly appeal to me - dark, proggy, melancholic and yet somehow really uplifting with a big focus on melodies and atmosphere.

If any of the above sounds interesting, check out the 2 new singles:
