Koenjihyakkei - Dhorimviskha

Postby elendil » Wed Dec 12, 2018 7:12 pm

For the one other avant-garde fan on this board... There's a new(-ish) album from this Japanese outfit associated with Tatsuya Yoshida of Ruins and Korekyojinn. Unlike Korekyojinn, Koenjihyakkei doesn't have much metal in it, but it's definitely weird and experimental from the many-small-notes school. Koenjihyakkei's previous work was Magma-influenced zeuhl, but the new album, _Dhorimviskha_, is more Canterbury/jazz/RIO. Keys, clarinet, and sax with bass runs, multiple and shifting time signatures, and weird soprano vocalizations in a made-up language (a la Magma). There's lead guitar too, but it actually takes a back seat to the other instruments for the most part. I don't care for most zeuhl, but this is pretty good on first listen. Lots to explore here below the surface.

I recall listening to Angherr Shisspa a few times a while back. Interesting stuff, definitely get a Magma-ish vibe from them. Thanks for the heads up.
