I'm not sure teasers that give us so little an idea really are much good.

That little bit sounded like "Black Clouds..." though. Hmm...

Yeah, it's hard to give an opinion based on this short teaser. I'm still not a big fan of Mangini and the teaser sounds exactly like most of the songs on their self-titled album.

Other than I hate the guitar sound - not so much the recorded tone as the farty seven-string sound that Petrucci has been in love with since Octavarium - it's impossible to tell anything from this teaser. I fully expect to like the album in general because I like every DT album to some extent, even the bad ones. This barely registers next to the new Conception songs.

I completely agree with you about the guitar sound. I thought that they wanted to go back to the classic sound of their early albums..

Is it wrong that I like those teasers more than anything from Astonishing?

It's...ok I guess. I didn't hate it, so I guess that's an accomplishment unto itself?

Why no it’s not.

It sounds solid, though familiar. Anything but another Disney recording please.

This new song is FANTASTIC. It's everything I want in a Dream Theater song. Better than anything on the last two albums for sure.

Really?

It sounds painfully generic, and paint-by-numbers DT to me, and I'm the guy who put ADTOE #1 that year.

I'm fine with paint-by-numbers DT. Do what you do and do it well. This song fits perfectly. Sonically, this is a mix of "Train of Thought" and ADTOE.

And what I like about this one is that it's short and to the point without any needles parts forced in for no reason like they at times have a bad habit of doing

Umm - they're a prog metal band. That's what they like to do. :?

I think the knock on shorter DT tunes in the past is that it's verse, verse, chorus...wank break...chorus...and this is no different. This is tighter than a...very, very...um, tight thing, but haven't we heard this 83 times before? NOTE: I only listened once.

This song is a step in the right direction coming from The Astonishing. It’s solid. I like it. Seeing the title I figured it would be sappy, but it’s heavy. Good to hear DT grow their balls back. :P

This second song is definitely better than the first. The solo section, in particular, is very nice. But it seems no matter what they do, they can't figure out how to make James sound good. Petrucci thinks himself a producer, but the records he's overseen for the band never actually *sound* great, vocals especially.

Yep John writes better Metallica licks than Metallica has in 30 years, right down to the guitar tone.

This is EXACTLY what I want to hear from Dream Theater, thrashy style guitar licks, cool creative prog parts that fit the song, the keys sounding non annoying and fitting the song, really cool solo sections.,with their Rush influences evident.

Reminds me a lot of a shorter version of Count of Tuscany

Love this new DT song. It doesn't even sound really like DT when it starts off, and I like that! I love that they are changing it up, but maintaining the heaviness. I still don't care for James Labrie, but aside from that..... Awesome song!!!

That last single confirms that I have no use for the new Dream Theater at all. Oh well.

Really? I think Fall into the Light is a great song!! They are finally, FINALLY doing something a bit different, then the same old recycled DT songs over again. This song seems to be loved by almost everyone that's reviewed it so far.......It's got everything, balls, chunk melody. Yea, it's not a wank-fest, but it's far far removed from "The Astonishing" borefest

I think the talk about this one will be split, like usual. When the self-titled came out, it was billed as being the essence of Dream Theater. I didn't think it was, but that's the feeling I get from this new one. If you think about the elements that make up their sound, that's what they're delivering this time. To me, it sounds like ADTOE, but even more concentrated. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it does what it does better than the last couple records.

But I'm only two spins in, so that might change.

You're not totally crazy, but I still prefer ADTOE to it. None of the others, though.

My favorite song so far is 'At Wit's End' and the only one that I still don't like is 'Untethered Angel'.
