Ayreon 'Into The Electric Castle’ 20th Anniversary

Postby ToddS » Thu Jul 19, 2018 12:54 pm

I can’t find this online so copy/paste from the mailing list.

For this 20th anniversary edition, Arjen re-mixed the audio to 21st century standards. He made it clear that it's a 'remix', not a 'remaster', saying "Remastering takes 2 hours, this remix took me 2 months!".

The 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Box Set contains:
3D-sculpted and framed Electric Castle
4 CDs: 20th Anniversary Remix + 20th Anniversary Remix Instrumentals
1 DVD: 20th Anniversary 5.1 Remix + Documentaries
3 LPs: Gold marbled vinyl (original 1998 mix) + Download card for the 20th Anniversary Remix
Certificate of authenticity, signed by Arjen

The 20th Anniversary Earbook contains:
Hardcover book with archive photos, lyrics and new liner notes
4 CDs: 20th Anniversary Remix + 20th Anniversary Remix Instrumental Versions
1 DVD: 20th Anniversary 5.1 Remix + Documentaries
Pre-orders are signed by Arjen
And last, but certainly not least: VINYL!
Packaged in a triple gatefold
Three slabs of 180 gram vinyl with the audio from the original 1998 release.
Includes a downloadcard for a complimentary MP3 download of the new 20th Anniversary Remix
Pre-orders are signed by Arjen

Black 3LP Vinyl
Signed by Arjen!

This sounds good and all, but I gotta bitch about a few things.

Remixed CDs only available in a $50 box set.

For the vinyl fans, they are the original mix. But there is more... we will include a download card for the remixed version in mp3 format.

This make sense to anyone?

Wtf? That makes it seem like a total money grab.

I'm going to end up buying the damn thing simply because it is the only Arjen vinyl I don't own (never seen a good copy for less than $275).

I'm still over here trying to figure out (beyond 5.1) why you'd remix this. Arjen's productions are perfect as-is.

Agree with all of the comments --- But I have to bite on the CD re-mix. If it's Arjen doing it, you know it's going to be good ...... also, this was one of the better sounding discs from early Ayreon, but hey an anniversary is an anniversary ....... I don't mind plunking money down on a project from Arjen, even it's a repeat.......my only wish would be that he did something new with my favorite Ayreon, The Final Experiment, but the re-issue with acoustic bonus disc was it I guess.......

I gotta agree it feels like a money grab.

Why not just release a bare bones CD version, and a CD/DVD version without the added fillers?

Saying that, I would love to add the sculpture to the man cave. Don’t think I’ll bite though.

Glass half full...
As Glenn mentioned, at least the vinyls will be more available, and affordable. Still why no remastered version?

Will be curious to see how this goes. On the surface, yes why mess with it?

FWIW, Arjen told me on Facebook that he had to remix for the 5.1 and instrumental releases. The stereo mix just comes along for the ride.
I'll be the judge of what's good and what isn't, thank you... ;)
