SORCERER / The Crowning of the Fire King ........

Postby LarryD » Wed Nov 01, 2017 3:17 pm

Well, Sorcerer is back with another gloomy, doomy, melodic disc .......yes, with Andy Engberg on vocals. The Great Andy Engberg I might add ........

I've owned one or two Sorcerer discs in my day, and I dismissed them as "ok" doomy metal but nothing special ..........I'm told their last disc " In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross" is excellent, but I only played one or two songs from it and didn't seem it as good as this one .........

"The Crowning of the Fire King" is like a band who is making their last disc .... and they want it to count. They call it "doom metal" but I call it slow, plodding, melodic metal..... it's not as heavy as say Candlemass, and it's not as plodding...... it's more like Black Sabbath / Headless Cross style gloom.........

Here, Andy Engberg says it's time to put up or shut up == and that they do ........check some songs here:

Well - here is the full disc :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNEYyJBDJqI

Check out the title track and following song Unbearable Sorrow ............

It's on Bandcamp here:
https://sorcererdoom.bandcamp.com/album ... -fire-king

Those of you who know Andy best from the legendary Twilight disc, or the Lions Share discs, will find him in top form here, and taking the music to another level.......
Another winner and another entry into the Top 10 list of 2017........

I had no idea Engberg was involved here. Definitely interested to hear this.

I talked about it on the other boards.

I love this album. I'm not a doom person either, but this isn't really doom in the normal sense. There is definitely that Tony Martin-era Sabbath feel to a lot of it, but I've been calling it 'slow power metal', since that's what it reminds me of. It's heavy without becoming too slow and plodding, the riffs and solos are memorable, and the vocals and melodies are fantastic. The production is great too, so there isn't anything to complain about, aside from maybe being better off without the sound effects. Even that's a minor quibble.

This will absolutely be high on my list of favorites for the year. I'm shocked I'm saying that.

I'm also not the biggest doom fan, but Sorcerer is a great band for me. This album is excellent all over, with the godly vocals of the most underrated singer in metal, Mr. Andy Engberg. The Black EP from 2016 and the 2015 album were also very good stuff.

Not a huge Doom fan here, but I do like a bit of doom when its done this way. Not pure doom, and quite melodic. This is really good.

Adding to the praise for this album. As everyone keeps saying.... It's doom, but it's.... NOT. Definitely has a few chuggy-chuggy slower sections, but even during those parts Andy's vocals keep it from feeling overly doomy.

What stood out to me as much as Andy's stellar singing were the lead guitar parts..... There were many interesting passages that really popped out, lending it a much more traditional metal vibe..... One solo stuck me as very Alex Skolnick, one was very Marty Friedman..... Just all around a REALLY good, really interesting album that had I not heard about hear I never would have even tried.

Thanks all!

***Glad to see you're digging this one ...... never heard you talk about it, so I figured it wasn't your thing ......... like you said, it's DOOM, but it's not .......Andy makes it all worthwhile along with the excellent melodic music ..... I don't get fatigued listening to this like I do with average doom ......... I could listen to Andy sing all day, and to me this is one of his finest performances.......

So glad to see all the love for that Sorcerer disc (which is killer indeed). Including from Glenn. Now, we need them at ProgPower!!

I'm going to be a +1 for loving this disc despite a general apathy for doom - the melodies on this disc are insane!

Got the ep “ Black” on I tunes for 3.99. Listened twice so far and it is kicking my ass like the new one. Have to thank this board for turning me onto this stuff. Andy Engburgh is a vocal god!!! Love this band. The song Into Oblivion is damn incredible

Andy Engberg is surely the most underrated singer in metal! He's been kicking all sort of ass since the 90s, with Twilight, Lions Share, Section A, 220 Volt...

Andy Engburgh is a vocal god!!!

If you haven't already, make sure to check out his back catagloue. He's worked with several bands, and they've ALL been very good. Lions Share (early), Twilight, and Section A are all worth digging up.

This is a solid album, and the vocals are certainly great, but does it bother anyone else how derivative they are of Candlemass?

No, because I don't feel like they are. Candlemass, at least from everything I've heard, is not nearly as detailed, lush, or melodic as Sorcerer is here.

That's fair, but several of the rhythm guitar riffs are ripped straight out of _Epicus Doomicus Metallicus_ and _Nightfall_.

Don't forget the album he did with Swedish veterans 220 Volt in 2014, Walking In Starlight. Excellent mix of hard rock and melodic metal.

I have most of his back catalogue except maybe the 220 volt. I just lost track for awhile but now thanks to hearing his voice again I’m all back on it. I also just ordered ‘ Speaking to Stones’ Elements which he sings on and also features the great Mark Zonder on drums. This came out in 2012 I believe. Haven’t heard anything of it yet but I’m out to get anything Anders sings on.

*** I have not heard from those Candlemass discs you talked about -- I have them, but haven't played them in years ........ to me, Sorcerer (this disc anyway) is much different than Candlemass......much faster than Candlemass -- and even though bands have awesome singers, Candlemass is very slow and doooomy, while I think Sorcerer is more melodic power metal slowed down, with much more melodies ...........

I don't get bored or tired of this Sorcerer disc -- but when I put on certain Candlemass discs, I tire of the slowness ......... I need to go back to some of the Doom discs and see what happens ........

Candlemass is a bit slower than Sorcerer and has fewer little guitar hooks - it's somewhat simpler music. But their first four albums are all classics in my view. Not very proggy (though their _Chapter VI_ album has a noticeable prog influence, with keys and a more trebly singer), but not the sludgy Sabbath worship that you often find under the doom label either (I dislike that stuff for the most part). You never know how these "classic" albums will strike someone listening to them for the first time. They are touchstones for me because I got into them when they were still somewhat fresh, but a lot of other bands have picked up on various elements of their style since then, and added more modern production values or more complex instrumentation, so it's hard to put yourself in the frame of mind of someone encountering the music for the first time in its original context.
