Galactic Cowboys - Long Way Back to the Moon (November 17, 2017)

While I expect not too many people here know these folks, several people I know were putting in sponsorship bids to bring them to PPUSA in 2018, on the heels of their recent reformation after being split up for over a decade. Musically expect the classic King's X sound (they're also one of the three Sam Taylor Houston bands), but somewhat faster and heavier, a healthy dose of old-school Anthrax making its appearance on their classic "Space In Your Face" from the 90s.

This song sounds very good so far. Stylistically middle of the road, though.

Ed.: If you need some convincing this was the first song off their first album. And it packs a couple of sonic surprises rarely found in metal or even prog. And shows that, unlike their peers, they had a talent for not taking themselves too seriously. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB8VlhToFok

Very much looking forward to this. Does anyone know if it is going to be distributed, or only available directly from Mascot? Their shipping rates are stupid.

Whoa, they're back together? Awesome. Though I really don't care for anything they did after SiYF... hopefully the new album has more of their "classic" sound.

I’m very much looking forward to this myself. They lost me after Machine Fish when they went a little too much low-key Kings-X. A return to the sound they had on the first two albums would be welcomed.

Edit: I just found out that the new album is available to pre-purchase on iTunes with the first single available now.

So this is now out and I have heard it. Expect something in between the first three albums stylistically - some of the simpler structures of Machine Fish with the heaviness of Space In Your Face, and some reworked older and unreleased material that hearkens back to the debut. There are some straighter rock aspects that might sound like later GC albums too. The wry humor is still present, the riffs and harmonies are terrific, and the production quality is outstanding.

As I originally said, there is a party of friends I know trying to get Galactic Cowboys to ProgPower, which I would totally welcome as based on this disc, I know they deserve it.

^I agree with this. Closer to groove-metal than prog, like a heavied-up _Machine Fish_, with some of the nasty bass licks of _Space in Your Face_. Beatlesesque vocal harmonies intact. Overall, a good album even though not in the main stream of what I normally listen to. It might even creep into my top 10... we'll see.

I’ve been listening to this on constant repeat and my only real criticism is that In The Clouds doesn’t feel like a proper album opener. It just doesn’t jump out at you like a cow mooing or Space In Your Face does. Fantastic album, otherwise and one of the few that has truly grabbed my attention this year. I didn’t realize how much I missed these guys.

I should also say that because this band is local to me, I went to their album release concert with four friends all flying out from the East Coast, and the performance was simply superb. I posted a good deal of footage on my FB profile, PM me for the link (if you aren't friends with me already).
