Most of these probably won't be of interest to anyone here, but sure, I'll post my top albums so far:

Harem Scarem - United (Melodic bliss)
Soen - Lykaia (So Opeth it hurts... in a good way)
Rise Against - Wolves (Punk-ish rock I can enjoy)
Creeper - Eternity, In Your Arms (Meat Loaf punk)
Orden Ogan - Gunmen (What Blind Guardian would be doing if they didn't suck now)
Nightmare - Dead Sun (Love it, even just for Maggie's vocals)
The Warning - XXI Century Blood (I'm lame)
Serious Black - Magic (Not as good as Mirrorworld, but still really cool)
Eclipse - Monumentum (Cheesy and fun)

And here's a list of a few albums from years gone by fans hate that I remembered I love:

Killswitch Engage - S/T [2009] (Pop? Yeah, but Howard is amazing on it)
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier (I love bloated, prog Maiden, as long as they aren't repeating choruses)
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events (No Portnoy, no problem. Best balanced DT in the last two decades)
Bruce Dickinson - Tyranny Of Souls (Weakest of the trilogy, but still awesome in its own right)

Slow year? Not hardly. Here's some cool stuff:

Odd Logic Effigy
Witherfall Nocturnes & Requiems
Ayreon The Source
Elbow Little Fictions
Mystery Weekend Mystery Weekend
Aleks Sever Extravagent
A Lucid Interval The Breath of Life EP
Creeper Eternity, In Your Arms
Chaos Inside Freedom.System.Future.Illusion.
Tetrafusion Dreaming of Sleep
Stereo Nasty Twisting the Blade
Marty Friedman Wall of Sound
Black Tora Warryor Demo
Internal Chaos Chaotic Sounds Propagation
The Vicious Head Society Abject Tomorrow
Greta Van Fleet Black Smoke Rising
Evership S/T
Walypyrgus Walpyrgus Nights

And here are some forthcoming releases that I have high hopes for:

The Contortionist Clairvoyant
The Great Discord The Rabbit Hole
Troldhaugen Dream Big
Jag Panzer The Deviant Chord
Ne Obliviscaris Urn
Leprous Malina
Caligula's Horse In Contact

Considering that I've purchased nearly 50% less music than this time last year, I'd say 2017 has been pretty decent so far.

Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier (I love bloated, prog Maiden, as long as they aren't repeating choruses)
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events (No Portnoy, no problem. Best balanced DT in the last two decades)

Maiden - This album is underwhelming only in that it feels very formulaic, and very repetitive. I don't think it's a bad album, but it feels like they took the "epic" sound they incorporate into 2-3 songs per album and made an entire album where EVERY song used that formula. "Book of Souls" was exponentially better, IMHO.

Dream Theater - GREAT disc, and still their best with Mangini on board. If I knock anything about it, it's that it felt like a very "safe" disc as it stayed very much safely within the popular DT mold. Personally, I don't have a problem with that, as what they do they do VERY well. "Breaking All Illusions" and "Bridges in the Sky" (?) are both all time DT classics.

Will try to noodle over a top list for the year. Too many good things still coming to remotely consider it finished.

Great to actually see some sort of list from you still kinda early as I always find at least one or 2 things I miss on your best of lists that I absolutely love

I will be very surprised if at least 2 of the top 3 below aren't bumped by years end. Ayreon could hang on in the top three, but it's ranking right now is more about lack of great discs this year rather than it being a brilliant album (as good as it is even).

1 - Ayreon "The Source"
2 - Need "Hegaiamas" (if not for the one track with dialogue, this might be #1)
3 - Pyramaze "Contingent" (the last two albums with the new singer have been FANTASTIC!)
(big dropoff here)
4 - Iced Earth "Incorruptible" (best IE in a long time, but big knock is that it really sounds like it's trying to replicate "Something Wicked" a bit too much)
5 - Labyrinth "Architecture of a God" (solid album, great performances throughout, but no single song that screams AWESOME at any point)
6 - One Desire s/t (amazing 80's hard rock out of Sweden; check out "Apologize" for a killer song that sounds like it came from 1988)
7 - Warrant "Louder Harder Faster" (I know, RIGHT?!?! What the &*^% is this doing on here?!? I am as surprised as anyone. First, it's a slow year, but second, this really IS a great, fun classic hard rock disc. Check out "Perfect" for a sample of how hard rock is done RIGHT.)
8 - KXM "Scatterbrain" (would place higher if not for Dug Pinnick's vocals, who I am not a huge fan of; very good songwriting throughout that overcomes it.)

Others I enjoy, but in no particular order:
Jorn "Life on Death Road"
Pain of Salvation "Passing Light of Day"
This Winter Machine "The Man Who Never Was"

Still have several others too new to really include:
Adagio
Prospekt
Ferrymen
Secret Sphere

I admit Threshold is going to mount a HUGE fight after hearing those two new songs.

Surprised to see these on any other list here than mine!

Really like the Walpyrgus. Excellent new old-school stuff. Stereo Nasty is not as good IMO, but still really fun trad metal.

Top 15 so far, in no particular order. This is likely to change a bit though, as newer stuff will be released, like the Threshold, Jag Panzer, Nocturnal Rites, Jack Starr's Burning Starr and others I forget at the moment...

Battle Beast - Bringer Of Pain (Noora is a powerhouse and the album is really varied and rules)
Blaze Bayley - Endure And Survive (his best since 2003's Blood & Belief)
Bonfire- Byte The Bullet (their best in years, quite heavy for them as well)
Eclipse - Momentum (not as great as the couple previous ones, but still excellent)
Grave Digger - Healed By Metal (my fave from them since 2005's The Last Supper)
Helker - Firesoul (not as great as the previous one, but still excellent. Too bad it's the last featuring the great Diego Valdez)
Iced Earth - Incorruptible (not as great as Dystopia for me, but still rules)
JD Miller - World War X (newcomer of the year for me, excellent melodic hard rock/metal with prog tendencies at times. Mix of Eclipse and Evergrey as they like to describe themselves)
Jorn - Life On Death Road (best album in a while for Jorn fronting Voodoo Circle or the Sinner band  )
Kobra And The Lotus - Prevail I (their best by far. Kobra's vocals rule and I'm glad they finally toned down the speed factor and increased the melodic one)
Mean Streak - Blind Faith (their best by far for them too. Melodic heard rock/heavy/power done the right way)
Radiation Romeos - s/t (lightest album of the bunch, but really well done AOR/hard rock with singer Parramore McCarthy of Warrior. Reviews are mixed but the disc rules for me).
Taberah-Sinner's Lament (more classic melodic heavy/thrash by these sadly underrated Australians)
The Ferrymen - s/t (not the great disc I was hoping to get by this line-up, but excellent nonetheless)
Walpyrgus - Walpyrgus Nights (more melodic classic old-school metal done so right)

Proggier releases I enjoy the most so far are the Pyramaze, MindMaze, Damnations Day and Anthriel.

I feel a must mention the new Soul Secret - Babel 8) . It's my favorite CD in 2017 so far. A solid follow up to their last release 4.
