Instructions for the prog & metal recs engine experiment

Postby elendil » Sat Aug 05, 2017 1:47 pm

All right, folks, it's go time! :D The rules are pretty simple:
  • Write up a spreadsheet with at least three columns, one each for band name, album title, and rating. It can be in just about any format. CSV is preferred, but XLS is fine. TXT works too. Here's what mine looks like:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/7nbdb7y4w3nsb ... e.png?dl=0

I've got more than three columns there, which is fine, because everything other than band name, album title, and rating will be ignored.
  • The rating can be in any scale you want: 1-5, 0-100, higher is better, lower is better, whatever.
  • Formatting and even capitalization make no difference whatsoever. But punctuation and spelling do matter. When in doubt, refer to metal-archives.com or progarchives.com for proper punctuation and spelling. But please try to eliminate diacritical marks (use English alphabet).
  • Once you have the file ready, email it to me at metalstats@nym.hush.com or upload it somewhere and send me the link to download.
  • The statistical algorithm will work best when (1) your ratings are quite diverse (so include stuff you hate as well as stuff you love) and (2) there is a group of albums that everyone rates. To make sure the second criterion is fulfilled, I've included a list of albums below that I'd like everyone to try to include. If you can't rate a couple of them, that's fine. Just want to make sure there's enough data here for the algorithm to work. Many of these albums are controversial or polarizing, which again should help the algorithm work better.

Here's the list of albums everyone should try to rate. Some of these I personally like and some I dislike, but all should generate strong opinions!

So it is ok just to rate the albums you have listed above ?

I'd rate a lot more than that. I'd say if you have 200 or more ratings, the algorithm is likely to give you some useful results. BTW, if you know that something is just not what you're into, you could always give it some arbitrary low rating. Again, I've made these really diverse so that the stats will give better (that is, more confident/less uncertain) results, so it's unsurprising if many participants haven't heard or have zero interest in at least some of the albums in the list.

I just emailed you my full list of rankings. Have fun, and cannot wait to see the output of this little experiment.
