Saga - Network

Postby GaetanL » Sun Apr 30, 2017 10:10 pm

I'm currently exploring the band Saga. I'm having difficulties finding interesting stuff for me after the album "Heads Or Tales" (1983).

But I think "Network" (2004) is very good. It sounds more rock to my ears and the songwriting clicks with me.

Now I need to visit the albums after "Network".

I haven't found much to can be called "progressive" in this band.

Prog Archives classify them as "Crossover Prog". I guess they mean they cross the line and they are not really a progressive band.

My favorite song so far is "Don't be late" from Silent Knight (1980). This song is a bit epic and progressive. According to the shows I have seen on DVD and Blu-ray, this is one of their most popular song. Sad they did not wrote more epic / progressive songs like this...

One of my all time favorite bands..
I definitely consider them progressive, while not with the long epic style songs the musicianship was on par (especially guitars and keys)with the big boys..
And to me their songwriting is what makes them progressive, very unique and multi influenced, many non traditional rock influences as well (jazz, fusion, pop, disco, new wave)that were present in the late 70s and 80s..
Check out their recent live disks to really get a feel for what they were about (Play it Again Sam,Worlds Appart live..which has a lot of their classic songs and that classic album in its entirety)

I have seen all their DVD releases and the Blu-ray release (Spin It Again - Live in Munich). I like the classic stuff. But like I said, for the albums released after "Heads Or Tales" (1983), I haven't found so far much interesting things for me. But I think the album "Network" (2004) is very good.

Try House of Cards from 2001. Lots of good tracks on that album.

In fact, I like the song "The Cross"! While watching the Blu-ray "Spin It Again! Live In Munich", I immediately clicked with that song!
But I'm not sure yet for the album as a whole. But the fact you mentioned it, I will revisit for sure. I may have overlooked...
It's not really a problem if it's not proggy. A good song is a good song. But sometimes they sound maybe a bit too pop for my tastes...
