Persefone - Aathma (first song, and full album reaction)

Postby outprogged42 » Thu Feb 09, 2017 8:37 pm

"Prison Skin" is the first main song off the album and the video is astounding (if not epileptic-friendly).

Here is a good time to say that I have this album and it mightily exceeds the last one. It's a bit less shred-based, not quite as blisteringly fast or heavy, and more carefully thought out and melodic. The keys are absolutely the star of the disc, as they're more integral to the song arrangements and the non-metal songs are absolute gold due to the mystical, ethereal atmosphere the keys create. The sound design and atmospheric elements elsewhere are mesmerizing, even working their way perfectly into the most brutal sections. The distorted riff portions are mostly unchanged but there is a lot more clean guitar work that continues to amplify the zen-like gracefulness of the disc even at its heaviest. Appropriately, since the lyrical themes are (again) based on Eastern spirituality and metaphysical concepts of the soul, existence, and love, in the Cynic tradition, and translate well musically into the incredibly acute sense of extreme sonic and dynamic contrasts.

Aathma is quite near a masterpiece and will most likely make my top 10 list easily.

Man, I was already sold after the piano intro. Damn I can't wait to get this one. Hopefully they will get another invite to the fest and actually make it this time.

Really looking forward to the full thing. Awesome band, and the nicest people alive.

I agree. This one will get Persefone to hit the big time. And with Glenn's endorsement above, I'm hoping they get another chance to come to PPUSA. They'll undoubtedly tear the place up.

This was the only thing I listened to today. Holy hell this album is amazing. It's one of the best slabs of prog I can recall for some time. It really has everything, and in spades.

This is currently a contender for a honest to goodness album of the year for me.

This is presently my AOTY and only a few bands will have a chance at beating it, including:

Kingcrow
Anathema
Pyramaze
Threshold

" Living Waves " I love how that melody of the chorus reminds me of the song " If I Fell " by the Beatles.

That break ( in the video ) from the 2:24 to the 4:15 mark is just so excellent......( although I like the full version from the cd as well :P )

Do not mind me though, I am just getting into this band and the song " Spiritual Migration " is slaying me. I should have listened to them so much sooner and I look forward to hearing all of their releases in full.
I never got a hotdog! (or that Mini 5 track DTM cd )
