Marcela Bovio / Unprecedented.......

Postby LarryD » Sun Nov 06, 2016 11:04 am

We all know Marcela Bovio from Stream of Passion, and if some of you saw her at PP with her band, and backing up Anneke in The Gentle Storm, you know she can sing with the best of them .......

On this solo disc she has just released, she writes and arranges everything with a string quartet ( along with Joost van den Broek ), and nothing more. You get Marcela, 2 voilins, a viola, and a cello. If that concept excites you, as it did me, then you should be all over this. The 2 problems I find with it though, are these.......first, because of the arrangements, and limited instruments, the songs start to sound samey very quickly. If you've listened to Apocalyptica, then you know what I'm talking about. I love cellos and violins in my music, but it does need to be broken up a bit along the way and it doesn't feel like it is here. Second, this is a definite mood disc. I can listen to Loreena McKennitt, Damian Wilson, and countless others sit in a room with acoustic instruments all day - but I have to be in the mood for that. No different here. Its not something you would reach for every single day ( I don't think ).

The production, as you would guess, is immaculate. If you want to be in a room with just Marcela, and have her sing to you in your living room, then this is what it's all about......Marcela and string instruments, and nothing more. She even sings a few songs in Spanish? I believe. If this all sounds wonderful to you, then by all means grab it, but just in case you're scratching your head in wonder, check her out here singing a song from the disc called "Saboteurs".
