The Otolith -- Folium Limina Single : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fskibAwbEcs Sing No Coda Folky, Doomy, fuzzy. Might actually be better placed as a heavy English prog/folk album in many ways, but the dueling electric violins make this album sing. This was formed by 5/6 of the now defunct SubRos...

VOLA/Voyager/Four Stroke Baron tour recap

The missus and I flew for a short EU vacation in the Netherlands and caught the VOLA/Voyager/ Four Stroke Baron tour last week at the small room in the 013 and Melkweg. I wrote a longer review for the college radio station, but below is the highlights. Four Stroke Baron: quirky, new wave influenced,...

Empress -- Fateweaver For a First album, this does a LOT of things right. Still a bit rough in places, but they don't have too far to improve. Caught their set on the stream on Mad With Power last night, and it was really quite good. Check it out on their bandcamp. https://empresslegion.bandcamp.com/

Any of you Southern Cross fans, check out Hillward.

Came across this on someone elses top 20 of 2021 list, and didn't know that the singer and drummer formed a new band called Hillward:

Warkings I dismissed due to the stupid videos, but perhaps music is good? Anything worth checking out? I wouldn't say Warkings is anything super special, they are just straight up pounding power metal, but they have interesting melodic intros, anthemic lyrics and a track "Fight" that draws pretty h...

Zornheym -- The Zornheim Sleep Experiment.

This is a fun and creepy little operatic/melodic metal concept album with varying amounts of death vox throughout.

Arion -- Vultures Die Alone I've seen this one on a couple of "best of" lists, and for the life of me I can't get into it..... To my ears, they've devolved from a decent power metal band to something approaching nu-metal.... I found this album to be borderline unlistenable. This album has a huge am...

I mean...I gave myself a choice between the new Rage, the new Brainstorm, the new Alien Weaponry, the new Pentakill and the new Spiritbox, and I went with everything but Spiritbox. Spiritbox - Eternal Blue Probably the hottest thing in metalcore right now? Female fronted progressive djenty metalcore, touching perfection on each genre label I would put on them. This album's got my dopamine stuck in the ON position today. The only thing that I don't like about it is that my fav...

Altzi not my favourite vocalist, but he does a good job with HF. Some Classic Prog Metal.

How about the Manchester band Konom? https://konom.bandcamp.com/ The sensibility and melodic interplay of Images and Words Dream Theater with vocals that land somewhere between Geddy Lee and Robert Plant. Like early DT or Haken, the singer isn't perfect, but he's got character for sure. I think this...

Re: Disappointments of the year (so far)

Man, I dunno. I've gotten so many records this year so far, way more than I usually do. I'd have to say, I'm really bummed by how the Magnus Karlsson's Hearthealer project turned out. I expected so much more and I was pretty disappointed with how blah it was.

WITHERFALL - Curse of Autumn What a disc. This is undoubtedly a serious contender for a top 5 spot once the year is over.
