Re: Some smaller releases I missed from last year.....
Thanks for posting this Glenn - sure missed some of those. The biggest surprise for me was Sacrosanct ... that does not sound anything like the thrash band I remember, and I've gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised. There's a certain "AFM Records" style to it (think later day Nocturnal Rites, Bloodhoun...

I’m liking this ... super fun and the 80s sound is how I like my cheese grated! I just randomly discovered this on fb https://youtu.be/cg6NcCoIDcg Where in the eff was I when this came out?Right up my alley as it's right in that Crimson Glory style metal that was right up my alley back then “Arabia” is one of the true forgotten gems of classic heavy metal- I never thought of i...

Glad I'm not the only one enjoying this: https://www.angrymetalguy.com/lord-divine-facing-chaos-review/ Some excerpts: That was wise, because at times these cats sound quite a bit like classic era Symphony X if they were a bit more streamlined and linear. So far I like: King Diamond - live - duh! This is obviously amazing and I can't say anything bad about this two-disc set (even if Larry wants to complain about the dual Abigail shows). Heck, my 8 year old son has become a devout King-fan now and sings along with all the songs! The Neal Morse Band -...

as I feel like Diego always sounds like he is in the exam room at the proctologist instead of the recording studio. Musically this is really good and definitely has an old school SymX / Adagio vibe going on. The song w Mark Boals is my favorite as I feel like Diego always sounds like he is in the exam room at the proctologist instead of the recording studio. It’s pretty painful to my ears and it sounds like it’s ...

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade
I like this thread because (a) when it comes to music most people overrate the present and don't hunt down greats from the past nearly as much as they should (the economist Tyler Cowen has written on this), and (b) I wasn't really in "the scene" most of the last decade, so I expect to learn about s...

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade
I'd take the John Arch EP over the Arch/Matheos, but that's nitpicking..... :) That EP was something special for sure - two incredible songs, and just to hear him back was so "emotional" an experience for us fanboys. The album in itself was superb for sure, but in all honesty, I haven't been revisi...

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade
Great list..... I want to call out the inclusion of Adagio, as I think this was a MASSIVELY overlooked album when it came out. Folks seemed to expect "more of the same" from the band, and instead they took a definite turn in the more technical / prog approach that turned off a lot of folks. Yes, I ...

The great prog metal discs of this decade
... well, at least in my opinion ;) Here are the 15 albums (I limited it to ONE only per artist) that I think best shows the quality of prog metal in this decade, and also what it is that I personally find interesting in the genre. 2010 – Pain of Salvation “Road Salt One” This is the album everyone ...

Interesting you rate Time, The Valuator and list amongst the other bands that does the style well Erra, but you didn't chart them. Did you listen to Neon? How'd you feel about it? 42. Ghost - Prequelle It made my list as well, but as a devoted Steinman fan, I don't hear much of it in Ghost. They don't have the Broadway/theater tinges to their melodies the way that Steinman had in his DNA. They share more with "Bad Attitude" era Meat Loaf, I would say. Still, it's great stuff...

Yet you always go out of your way to make sure we know how different you are and how much you don’t identify yourself with the metal scene to the point where it has the adverse effect. The only reason you don’t feel comfortable with the term metalhead is because of what it means to other people (or what you think it means to them). You shouldn’t be so concerned with what other people think - be proud of who you are and what you do with your life - that includes what music you lis...

You always make a point out of saying how much you dislike metal but that kind of stance is more in line with the Beavis and Butthead kind of “Im a true metal head” attitude than a true open minded one, so you’re actually painting yourself into the exact same corner you’re claiming to dislike by sa...

Here are 2 bands/albums that no one has mentioned. 1) Trival Act: Mindscape An awesome album that came out in 1997 (I believe). They were from Norway. This band was on the technical side of Prog, but very melodic as well. A Dream Theater meets Fates Warning as they had no keyboards in their sound. ...
