Re: What are you listening to right now?

I'm gonna be pleased to be back home in non-Christmas times, that's all I'm gonna say atm. LOL - I can't stand 99% of Christmas music, so ... I'm listening to a band called POLLEN and their newest album "Uncanny Valley" as they popped up in my Amazon Music suggestion list. I know nothing about them...

Re: Unprocessed - ...and everything in between

I still don't understand why they needed to put a blanket of distortion over almost everything (especially the vocals), but the album's really good all the same. I love love love the album ... absolutely incredible. I will admit, after getting the entire album, that there does seem to be something ...

Re: End of year lists - are we ready ?

I guess I'm in the minority when I say that my tastes have actually gone "heavier" as I've aged....I was always worried when I was young that once I got old I wouldn't like metal anymore.. Even my relatives told me that same thing.. Well, I'm sooooooooooooo glad that didn't happen and I have proven...

Re: Disappointments of the year ......

MYRATH / Karma - Another one of my favorite bands trying to do the poppier thing. This disc isn't even out yet, and from what I've heard from people, and hearing some of the songs on the disc ( it was leaked and then pulled for some reason ), I knew that I wasn't going to dig the direction. I know ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Been on a TIAMAT kick all day - I honestly think this is one of the few bands where I like all of their albums (for different reasons), and several of them I'd even label "masterpieces" in their respective genres. How many genres (or more accurately, which genres, I guess) have they put out albums ...

Re: Temic / Terror Management Theory

Got this on order from Laser's Edge and very keen to get it in. The single I heard convinced me to buy it. USPS took my order for a walkabout for some reason, but I'm tucked into this one now and it's quite nice. I agree the vocals could stand out more, but I'm enjoying all aspects of the performan...

The end of the year is such a mess for me every time. I'm gonna try to make myself write one, but I doubt it'll happen. I'm pretty sure all the candidates are in for me, though.

Architects - Seeing Red
I guess the lads have something to say about their "fans". Good on em to do it in the form of a perfect execution of the metalcore form, too.

Re: New stuff Friday ...

Took me a few days to get to it, but Jack the Joker has a new single out and announced an album for next year. I like the tune a lot and am very excited for a new album from these folks. They're another outfit doing a good job melding traditional prog metal and modern stylings. Also, being Brazillia...

MAYFIRE - Cloudscapes and Silhouettes Released yesterday and it’s one of the most impressive prog-metal debuts I’ve heard in a long time. It’s the “next-gen” style, so for the old schoolers this might not be interesting. I hear Boil, Syqem, Skyharbor, Good Tiger, Time the Valuator and more in this ...

Ihsahn - Pilgrimage to Oblivion
There's a lot of interesting stuff going on in this tune. I doubt he's going to make new fans with it, because it sounds like Ihsahn sounds, but to me that's perfect.

Giving the most recent two Ghost Iris albums a spin. I'd forgotten how much I love this band. Really good groove oriented djenty metalcore.

Finally getting to the new The Voynich Code, Insomnia. Really good prog-tinged deathcore. The keys are very nice when they show up. Claus, this one might tickle your fancy if you haven't come across it yet.

POLARIS - Fatalism Great album! Metalcore with a proggy and semi-djenty edge. Superb melodies, great guitars and cool vocals (both clean and screams). Between this and Currents there’s been some good prog-core this year. The new singles from ERRA sounds good as well … this might finally be the year...

I just listened to it again and it gets boring and bland way too quickly for such a long album. I find it really hard to latch onto most things that have that classic progp...

Cliche it might be, but sometimes you just need to embrace some good cheddar.
This remains true. When I do find myself wanting a staunch Gruyere I tend to go for my classics. Often Dream Evil or Twilightning. The cheesiest cheeses.

My house is 100% fantasy nerdery, and I don't listen to much power metal anymore. To me it's because the music is cliched and boring. Virtually all power metal is stamped from one mold, and I just don't have much love for things coming from that mold anymore. The lyrics being silly as hell isn't ev...
