Old School Haul

I've been diving into the lengthy prog metal heroes thread and blew up discogs tonight. A few I had decades ago and traded, some will be new to me. Not sure if I'll like all these but at the prices I found I'm not gonna be salty. Here's my list so far Dreamscape - very, 5th Season Aztec Jade - Concr...

Re: Re-discovering Dreamscape

I'm kinda digging the Very material. I've got both of his solo albums here somewhere. I bought a bulk lot of prog cds and these were in there along with some other more obscure stuff. I played a couple of those tunes on YouTube and I line tha so far as well.

Re-discovering Dreamscape

When End of Silence was released around 20056 or so it just didn't click with me. It was good to my ears but nothing noteworthy and I've pretty much been dismissive ever since. I pulled this album off the shelf a couple of weeks ago and this just crushed me. Outstanding stuff, great compositions and...

Re: New Sweet Oblivion tune...

The first one was serviceable for me at best. This was lifeless, disjointed and weak chorus. Geoff sounds okay. I still can't like anything he's done since Promised Land, and that's what, 25 years ago? He's still a top five alltime for me but it's obviously all for his early work.

Re: Truls Haugen - The Haugen Archives EP

Good for him and obviously good job on the art

Truls and I talked back and forth in 2003 or so and he sent me their demo. Wish I still had it cause there was a track on there that didn't make it to the debut that was better than the rest.

Yes, horrible name. Yes, it's fantasy themed power metal. Yes, it's goddamn fantastic. Following on the heels of my Flames of Heaven discovery is another super melodic, smooth and fun band from Austria. I'd have never listened to them if they hadn't come up on one of my youtube playlists. It's just ...

The last two are in my top ten of the past decade so this will be great to complete the trilogy. The last album was released the week before the 2016 election and now Norchestrion is being released around the current political climate. Love these guys!

Re: Seriously obscure and rare prog metal?

Ya know, when I did a board search for KR and came up with no results. I totally get the forgotten part of that thread, but for these bands I'm not sure of hero status. I'll admit to skimming it but now I think I'll need to go back and read in detail since I'm obviously oblivious. OOhh, that would b...

Seriously obscure and rare prog metal?

I'm curious about the stuff I've never heard, the music that may have been local or on a shaky indie label that printed 60 copies. I was recently turned onto a christian indie AOR prog band recently that I've never seen mentioned on any board or forum. The band is Kidd Robin and the album is The Ine...

Re: Christiano Fillipini's Flames of Heaven

After spending more time with this I can say this would have made my top five of 2020 if I hadn't already committed lol. The previous description is still fairly accurate but I'd also add that if Vince DiCola were to ever write a symphonic metal album this would be it. The 80s inspired keyboard soun...

Unless I completely missed it, there isn't a link to the audio for the band they want identified. Sounds like a cool mystery, though.

Christiano Fillipini's Flames of Heaven

Wow This was released a couple of weeks ago so a lot of people are going to miss it. Didn't seem like there was any press or promotion on this outside of Europe. This is amazingly beautiful, melodic, symphonic, bombastic power metal of the highest order. Think a more symphonic and melodic Labyrinth ...

I absolutely love these guys and get to talk to them occasionally. This is the end of the trilogy they started with Orvam. That album was huge for me back in 2014 when it was released and remains a favorite of mine. This is going to be a mighty release and a great way to start off 2021.

Prismind - Disciples By Design

This is one of the better discoveries I've made in the past few years. This was released in 2017 and largely went unnoticed and had zero mentions here. This is melodic prog metal of the highest caliber. Imagine mixing less chaotic Zero Hour/Cynthesis styled Tipton riffs with a Jeff Loomis slant. The...

Re: Discs I liked this year

I had no idea Everthrone was still active. I'll check that out. Claus, I think you and I have the same aversion to Pyramaze. The vocals are so over-produced and way too many chorus effects are used. Could be a Jacob Hanson decision or he's just not good and this covers that up. There is exactly zero...

I already have another possible entry into this list. Flames of Heaven is pretty freakin great. It's symphonic metal from Italy with just sickly ridiculous choruses. It was released on 11/20 so I'm just now discovering this.

First top ten in years

This is the first one of these I’ve done in a few years as I am generally terrible at ranking music. However, 202 is an unusual year and I’ve had so many good albums and older discoveries that I feel for sanity’s sake I should make a list. This year was so great that instead of my normal top five I’...

Echosoul - Badass US melodic power

They released their debut End of Darkness this past summer. Initially I was meh on this. Good but not great. I think I was hearing the two songs Ripper Owens sang on, and that didn't work for me on any level. Never been a fan. However the rest of the album is handled by melodic powerhouse Rob Lundgr...

I disliked Conception so much I gave it away. Roy is an all-time top five vocalist for me with Alder, Deyoung, Tate and Sweet. This stuff was far too avant garde and experimental sounding for me. The first album I ever heard Roy on was Flow. That was brilliant. This new material he's trying some alt...

Re: Fates Warning -Long Day Good Night is fantastic

I think I may have isolated the obstacle I have with this album. Jim's guitar tones are throwing me off. He's using some new recording equipment cause this really doesn't seem like FW sonically. A song or two has a country feel in the intros, so much so I was waiting for the slide and someone to bre...

I've fully come around to this one. It's never happened that it took this long to fully absorb a FW disc. There's a lot of more mellow stuff on this than previous. However, the general consensus is Ray is the star here, and I'd agree.
