Re: New Arch/Matheos..
Breaking news I actually really like this Matheos going extremely heavy, way out of the box for him. And his voice for a change not only doesn't annoy me,but actually sounds great in this song,no over singing, and his tone sounds a bit mature in that he doesnt have that nasally/shrill sound that kills...

Re: Darkwater - Human (first impressions of the full disc)
I must have listened to the album close to 25 times now ... no kidding ... Why? Well ... I really was trying to prove a point here (that the band sucks), so I decided to give the disc a thorough listen on Spotify so that I could tell Larry and company how bad it was. However, after 3-4 listens I ke...

Re: Devin Townsend - Empath
I got to listen to the whole record yesterday, and it was awful. Want to bang my head into the desk awful. None of it makes any sense as he bounces from idea to idea, none of the riffs or melodies are interesting, and there are myriad sections of ambient noise that add nothing. It will wind up bein...

Re: Dream Theater - "Distance Over Time" Album Teaser
Really? It sounds painfully generic, and paint-by-numbers DT to me, and I'm the guy who put ADTOE #1 that year. I'm fine with paint-by-numbers DT. Do what you do and do it well. This song fits perfectly. Sonically, this is a mix of "Train of Thought" and ADTOE. And what I like about this one is tha...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread
Depressive Age Anyone remember them? For me this was one of the most “genre-pushing” bands of their time (early 90s). While only putting out 4 albums in a 5 year span this band managed to do a complete shift from technical thrash (think Coroner, Deathrow) outfit through a dark/gothic tinged prog me...

I have the demos from the follow up and they were heading in a nice blend of more modern grove with the technical style..then egos destroyed the band

The SANVOISEN post from last week really got me thinking about all those amazing prog metal bands that were the basis for all our discussions here - those bands without whom most of us wouldn't care so deeply for the genre. Those bands that showed us a window to more than just Dream Theater/Queensr...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread
Digital Ruin - Listen I just went back and listened to that disc. That was a disc that I really loved back then. However, listening to it now didn't really go over that well - in fact it sounds "old". We've obviously come a long way in terms of production since then :) I also feel that there's too ...
