Re: What are you listening to right now?

Heaven's Edge s/t - Very under-the-radar early 90s hair metal band. Debut album was EXCELLENT, and followup eight years later was fairly mediocre, as were most of these bands by that point. I'm seeing on FB they are back active again, with a new album coming next year.... Curious to hear if it recap...

Crimson Glory / Transcendence - I will never get tired of this disc. So many memories of discovering this band back in the day ........ Midnight was untouchable. R.I.P. Great album! First time I heard it, I only made it partway into "Red Sharks" and was just like..... NOPE! But then was pushed into...

Re: Shadow Gallery - Carved in stone 2LP Vinyl release coming

That year was ridiculous in hindsight. Apart from the Ayreon, shadow gallery and Arena albums, there was: - clone by threshold - one hour by the concrete lake by pain of salvation - twilight in Olympus by symphony x (I must be a very small minority, but that's still my favorite by the band. Every s...

Re: Shadow Gallery - Carved in stone 2LP Vinyl release coming

Long time lurker here who hadn't visited the forum for quite a while, so I just saw this post, and I think it deserves renewed attention . Those first 3 SG albums were the best that 90s progmetal had to offer for me. In fact my journey into the genre started with ayreon's into the electric ca...

Behind the Curtain - Till Birth Do Us Part.
One of the most underrated prog albums of all time.
Yeesh, strong disagreement on that one. I found it almost unlistenable, to the point where I traded it in before I was even trying to clean out the collection.

To each their own on that one, I guess!

Galderia - Endless Horizon These guys sound Italian, but according to Metal Archives they're from France. They play very infectious, happy anthemic power metal a'la Lost Horizon. The first band I've heard in many, many years that takes me all the way back to the innocent early years when I was just...

Zierler "Esc" - Aggressive, chunky as hell Finn Zierler post-Beyond Twilight project. Kelly "Sundown" Carpenter on vocals if I recall (at work, CD not in hand, too lazy to look it up). I love Finn's composition style, and really wish he were more active in the scene as pretty much everything he has ...

Lana Lane - Covers Collections Just one of those voices that keeps pulling me back. Discovered her around the Garden of the Moon era if I recall correctly, as one of our local CD shops (Harmony House) stocked a few LMP releases and at that point those were almost a blind buy. She's one of those arti...

Yngwie Malmsteen - Alchemy

Not as good as the previous "era" material overall, but still classic Yngwie at heart with Mark Boals on vocals.

Re: ARENA / The Theory of Molecular Inheritance ......

All jokes and silly jabs aside, this album frigging slays! I can't get enough of it. To me (and apparently I'm alone on this board in thinking so) it's 100% ARENA - just in a new setting with Damien on vocals and trying out new things, which to me is what this band always has done - changes here an...

For the record - I don't have a super duper audio system here. I have a quality, very revealing system that will show the imperfections of badly recorded material..... unfortunately, most of the metal we listen to isn't that greatly recorded and use massive compression techniques to put their sound...

I'm in the process of trying to thin the herd some..... Common stuff I'm taking to Half Price Books, setting aside the more rare ones to eventually go on eBay or Discogs.

There's just too much here to hold onto sub-par discs.

Glory "Wintergreen" - I'm a slappy for anything Goran Edmund. Not sure how you categorize Glory, but somewhere in the hard rock / AOR range with a few mild neo-classical and prog touches. Melodic as hell.

Evership / The Uncrowned King - Act 2. Very disappointing indeed. I got this with the new Arena and I thought I would be 2 for 2... nope.
I skipped this one as I wasn't overwhelmed with the first one.

NP - Symphorce "Unrestricted" (Andy B Franck, very "ehh" songwriting)

Road Trip - Lots of new releases

Took a trip up to Toronto last week for work, and managed to listen to a WHOLE LOT of new stuff that's been sitting in a stack at home. Seventh Wonder “The Testament” – It’s very prototypical SW, complete with big lush melodies and sufficient noodling to keep listeners occupied. I can’t find anythin...

I agree. Damian's voice is so distinctive that when I hear it my brain goes "this is a Damian album" not "this is an Arena album". I feel the same way about Fabio in Angra. If Yngwie is a joke now then he was a joke back in the day. The only thing that has changed are the people who are listening. Yngwie is Yngwie. Did he put out better albums 30 years ago? Probably. Is he any less Yngwie now than he was 30 years ago? Absolutely not. Disagree. Yngwie has always had th...

Say what you will about the joke he has evolved into..... But back in the day Yngwie put out GREAT album after GREAT album, despite the revolving door of musicians around him. I had "Seventh Sign" playing at work today, and was enjoying the hell out of it just like it was the mid-90s all over again....

Loving this album..... Getting the obvious out of the way, the combination of the Wastefall vocalist and Kristofer Gildenlow does lend an immediate early era Pain of Salvation sound to some of this, but it's definitely not a POS clone....
