Re: Animate - Infinite Imaginations

Addendum to previous post:

Ken has this in stock at LE, so go grab one.

This is a great, traditional prog metal album. Overall feel of the album falls between Tomorrow's Eve and Cornerstone.

Re: Redemption clones

My entire point was their song structure is unique. Take Bleed Me Dry. Nick's use of trashy riffs before the first verse never seem, well, thrashy. He turns what normally isn't melodic into pure melody. And then he follows up that verse with some tasty keys. I think I'm such a fan of them from the u...

Albums I disliked, now I love

AKA WTF was I thinking??? I've always been pretty terrible about judging a band or album really quickly and dismissing it prematurely. I'm quite opinionated, and that often causes me to miss out on really great listening opportunities. The three examples below are all kind of the same slower tempo b...

Re: EVERSHIP / The Uncrowned King (Act I) ......

I liked the first, never heard the second and I'm not terribly thrilled with this one. They have a LONG way to go before they're even close to Mystery talent and songwriting-wise. I've always drawn parallels between Evership and Odd Logic, and OL seems to have cracked the code on their sound with th...

Re: Animate - Infinite Imaginations

I'm myopic that way, a character flaw. I suppose as the industry moves that direction I'll have to adjust. However, I've never liked a DL only album as much as this so my mind can definitely be changed in this unique situation. It's kinda like when I was doing reviews for a few different sites. I wo...

My amazing current car playlist

I've got around 1500 songs on a thumb drive in the car, but have a select group of the best. Prismind/Disciples by design - Super melodic prog metal that's a mixture of Zero Hour and Magnitude Nine. There's some techy yet melodic guitar parts that scream Tipton with a great singer and choruses. http...

Animate - Infinite Imaginations

I wasn't expecting this at all, but this is an AOY contender for me. So far Turbulence and Need have dominated the other releases but this one is just as good. ITs got the same basic formula as those bands with some complex but melodic guitar work and powerhouse vocals and melodies that remind me of...

Re: New stuff Friday ...

Sucks on the Silver Talon. I was kinda pumped for that one based on the singles I heard. Looks like they front-loaded their marketing and kept their weaker songs back till release day. I'll still probably get this but may youtube stream before purchase to make sure. I'm not a huge Nevermore fan and ...

Re: The Stranger

It's apt that the name of the album is Kaleidoscope cause this album is unfocused as fuck. It's really all over the place vocally, and that's not normally something I can handle. Musically it's outstanding, but a few more melodies and less warbling on the vocals(just hold a damn note) would be in or...

Tomalot never scratched my Khanalot needs completely so this'll do for a while. They look ridiculous, like the Ghost Ship Octavius tour bus crashed with the Cure's, but I can dig this stuff. Nobody has been able to fully fill the Khan void, but this is a nice attempt by a young band. At least they h...

We're right there together in thinking and taste so far. If you haven't yet you should definitely go back and look into Need's previous two albums. This one completes a trilogy. Youtube the song Lifeknot and you'll be won over. Very much in the vein of FWX and Alder's Engine, but with more groove. G...

Re: Carmeria - Advenae

I checked this out just after I posted about Turbulence being my no.1 so far this year. This could beat it out. I'm having doubts about finding physical options, but I'll contact the band to see. A download is fine and I suppose that's going to be far more prevalent. But damn these tunes sounds great!

Re: Just ordered from The Lasers Edge .......

Hey, so did I!!

I ended up with

Odd Dimension -Blue Dawn
The Stranger - Kaleidescope
Teramaze - Sorella
Orden Ogan -Final Days
Poverty No Crime - Secret to Hide
Cullooden - Silent Scream

Not sure when I'll get to spin all of these but I figured I'd front load my Summer listening stack

As usual I'm terribly late to the party. I know Larry and Claus have a special connection to this album but I'm just now getting around to listening. How did you end up here?

OR more specifically, how did you end up joining this web group? For me, I came in contact with this group in late 1998 or so once I actually had a computer of my own. Prior to anything online I relied on fanzines and magazine ads for Impulse Music and other various late 90s vendors. I was getting a...

Re: Flames of Heaven, Even Flow, Virtual Symmetry and Temperance

All of these bands have one common denominator in singer Marco Pastorino. He's quickly becoming one of my favorites in the genre. There's an occasional heavy accented line but overall his delivery is smooth and powerful, much like a combination of Michelle Luppi and Toby Hitchcock. It seems he pick...

House of Spirits - Turn of the Tide

This is still one of the greatest prog metal albums ever recorded. This was released in 1994 and remains a bar that most bands cannot achieve. Their production was absolutely massive at the time, and would be one of my go-to albums to test a new sound system with. The melodies are as good or better ...

Almost exactly like with Dreamscape, I decided to play some of them today to see if a decade or so away made a difference with me. It did. Re: Turbulence - Frontal

People give Sarafino crap because of all the copycat, cookie cutter bands he signs, but this one is quite different. He is venturing into full-on prog territory, and that's a welcomed sign for bands who have trouble catching on to any kind of label support. If I had to describe this I'd say it's som...

There are none. Zero. That tells me that they're at the top of the food chain within the community. There's hundreds of Maiden, Priest and, of course in our world, Dream Theater clones and soundalikes. I use a lot of band comparisons in my descriptions of music and I've never once compared any band ...

For most these won't be new. I knew of their existence but had never listened till recently an have now ordered most of their back catalogs. There's a lot I've missed out on. Larry. Just listen to these. Put headphones on and absorb the vibe, the emotions. George's guitar style is a combo of Matheos and Marcel Coenen. The intricacies in there are so deep.
