Re: Great songs from not-great albums
I like that song; thanks for sharing. It does sound very 1991, not that that's a bad thing!

I guess I should qualify "huge." Not outdoor stadiums that seat tens of thousands, but indoor arenas that seat thousands. See for instance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8uH2kmun60 .

Re: Andre Matos is dead
Did he ever even perform in the U.S.? My guess would be that if he did, it would have been with Shaman in the early aughts. Because people in this country have terrible taste, I'm pretty sure we missed out on all Angra touring in the 90s even as they played to huge crowds in Brazil, Japan, France, a...

Tell me about it! I think _The Odyssey_ is a fine album. _Iconoclast_ I really didn't care for stylistically.

Here's a classic-period Angra track I'd never heard before! "Rainy Nights," released only as a single and a Japanese bonus track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjfDCiy ... dex=4&t=0s

"Fear of the Dark" is a good one. Not sure I've gotten around to listening to _Scarsick_ (reviews scared me off).

The one I always wonder about is lead guitarist Gabor Olah from Hungarian avant-garde metal band Even Song. Such a fantastic musician - it would be such a loss if he has given up music entirely.

Great songs from not-great albums
All right, here's a thread idea to take my mind off everything wrong with the world and my life. What are some mediocre or even downright bad albums that nevertheless boast a superb song? To me two albums leap out immediately when I think of this contrast. The first is super-obscure: Dark Symphonies...

I interpret it as meaning "not putting in as many different styles." The idiom "throwing in all but the kitchen sink" means putting everything in.

Cool, gotta look those up.
Heh, and I just discovered that the lyrics to "Metal Icarus" were actually written by Chris Tsangarides and Rafael Bittencourt!

Re: Andre Matos is dead
I listened to _Ritual_ today and it really is a great album. But it is also extremely dependent on Andre's vocals and on the keyboards. The composition is excellent though it's lacking excitement in the lead guitar department compared to Angra. But it definitely prompts me to listen to Shaman's late...

Re: Andre Matos is dead
I'm still pretty devastated by this, even though Andre hadn't made any really great new music lately. He seemed like such a nice guy, and 90s Angra was a formative part of my young adulthood. They're one of the few metal bands my wife likes, and so several of their songs take me right back to those ...

Re: Andre Matos is dead
I've been watching 90s Angra bootlegs on Youtube all afternoon. Most are of really crappy quality, but this one is quite good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl3OBhq15mc Angra on Brazilian MTV in 1994. Andre's like 22! Listen to the end to hear the drummer burst out with some (improvised?) gruff vo...

I'm a big Psychotic Waltz fan! 4 albums with a different sound! My personal rating out of 5: A Social Grace: 5: The most chaotic (but still melodic to me)... Into The Everflow: 4.5: The most psychedelic... Mosquito: 3.5: The most commercial... Bleeding: 4: The most melodic... We agree on 100% on ev...

Re: Saviour Machine: Would it be for me like Veni Domine?
The first album is accessible, song-oriented, and borderline metal, so I'd say it's the no-brainer introduction to the band for PMheads. _II_ is good but softer, more symphonic, more bombastic, and less accessible. All their stuff is on Amazon Music and I imagine other streaming services.

Wow, pretty sleazy of Massacre. (Are they even still around? Used to have some good stuff back in the day.)introclaus wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2019 1:24 pm
It's not a "real" album ... it's an unofficial, non-band-approved, bootleg of rough demos that the band had sent the label, who then put it on CD.

Re: Saviour Machine: Would it be for me like Veni Domine?
It doesn’t help that the fourth disc in the trilogy (III:II) was never released and leaving the project unfinished.... I haven't listened to any of the Legend albums (early reviews scared me off), but Amazon Music has a Legend III:II released on Massacre Records on August 5, 2011. 76 minutes of run...

Damn it, I missed their Boston show. This is a band I've never seen live. Where do people go to get notified of tours? It seems I'm always missing things unless I specifically look for them.

I like it and don't get the charge that it is too chaotic at all. It's actually pretty catchy. That said, my favorite DT-related album is probably still _Synchestra_. But that's subject to change.

Hell is a good story. UK band got record deal in the 80s, label went bust, guitarist committed suicide, band broke up. Then reformed a few years ago and released an excellent album, Human Remains. Their next album isn't as good.

I've been listening to a bit of new music, but mostly, as usual, exploring older stuff. My favorite recent discovery is the 2012 album The Death Defying Unicorn by Norwegian proggers Motorpsycho with the Trondheimsolistene and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Apparently these guys are pretty huge in Norway...

Archetype was one of the first truly underground power/prog metal bands I fell in love with - thanks to Claus. The creative intricate details, the melodies and the grooves all meshed together so seemlessly, that it appeared so simple. This whole concept was not just bound to the fantastic guitarwri...

That was a lot of fun & makes me want to watch some more live QR from the 80s/early 90s. Though too young to have been a fan in the 80s, I was fortunate enough to see them when Geoff still had *most* (not all) of his range - 2000, Madison Square Garden, with Iron Maiden and Halford. He sang "Queen o...

I guess I'm down with the Kraken because I dug this, even though the main theme is a little simple. John's voice has held up amazingly well over the years. I understand why people don't like him, but I do. I've always enjoyed a distinctive, trebly style of vocal, even in death metal - I'll take a Je...
