Re: Bands known for Christian themes

I never fully investigated this band though... I don't have a single album from them...
I have their first album; it's fantastic. None of their subsequent stuff that I've heard has been that good. And yes, it's Christian.

I'd say While Heavens Wept fits under #2.

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade

Not a fan of Alcest, but I appreciate their quality in what they do. It just never appealed to me. I enjoy very little shoegaze/blackgaze (Vaura is one of the few bands in the genre that I really dig). Never heard. I'll check 'em out. Diablo Swing Orchestra - _Pacifisticuffs_ (2017) - overflowing w...

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade

Yes, and if we define "progressive metal" narrowly, I'd say the Arch/Matheos album and a Redemption album of one's choice also belong somewhere on the list... Redemption for sure! I'd take the John Arch EP over the Arch/Matheos, but that's nitpicking..... :) De gustibus non est disputandum. :) I li...

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade

Great list..... I want to call out the inclusion of Adagio, as I think this was a MASSIVELY overlooked album when it came out. Folks seemed to expect "more of the same" from the band, and instead they took a definite turn in the more technical / prog approach that turned off a lot of folks. Bold ca...

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade

I like this thread because (a) when it comes to music most people overrate the present and don't hunt down greats from the past nearly as much as they should (the economist Tyler Cowen has written on this) Only about 1% of my 2018 music purchases are 2018 releases... But I have to say that I still ...

I like this thread because (a) when it comes to music most people overrate the present and don't hunt down greats from the past nearly as much as they should (the economist Tyler Cowen has written on this), and (b) I wasn't really in "the scene" most of the last decade, so I expect to learn about so...

Cool! I really dig their _Waist Deep in Dark Waters_ EP. WHW's Tom Phillips wrote 1 or 2 of the songs on that I believe.

Re: 2018 - Top 50 Albums

Great list. Some things here I had not heard of or didn't know about and will explore further. Didn't know that In the Woods... had dropped a new album, for instance. On Primordial... In my book they are one of the best metal bands of the past quarter-century. They released four superb albums in a r...

Re: Top 50 Albums of 2018

I always enjoy reading your list Glenn. I half agree with your comment about BTBAM (blast beats need to be reduced, but not necessarily the amount of screaming; I just think their ability to compose songs isn't what it was. emphasizing chops and added sections that don't add value. Also their sound...

Re: Top 50 Albums of 2018

How many years have you done this? I ask because I saw last year's list, but nothing before then. If you keep an archive of previous years' top 50s, I'd love to see them and mine for things I've overlooked. I have been doing it a long ass time on various forums. I never archived anything. However, ...

Re: Top 50 Albums of 2018

This is awesome. Some great finds here I would not have come across otherwise. Listening to the All Traps on Earth album now and it is darker and more symphonic than I expected. Not bad at all. I like the TOC song you posted... Maybe Melodic metal with a progressive touch? The cover of Deep Purple - "Smoke on the water" is special... Another cover from them: Judas Priest - Nightcrawler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6PnRpMVoec Fair. Not super-proggy by any means but definitely touches h...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread

Not as obscure as some of the mentions here, but I am curious what the general opinion is on TOC, _Loss Angeles_ (Spinefarm, 2003). Apparently they were a melodic death metal band before this, but this album is pure prog metal. It has a strong balance between melodic hooks and complexity, emotional...

Yeah, that Mercury Rising debut was great, though I didn't care for their second. I recall MR getting tons of play on the old board when it came out, but you don't hear about it much these days.

Ah, Behind the Curtain... I remember liking them, though not quite enough to buy the album in my days of poverty. Listening again. A bit similar to Poverty's No Crime, whom I also would consider underrated, at least for their album The Chemical Chaos, which is excellent.

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread

OK, I'll follow OP's original vision here. :) Avidost - demo The best metal band never signed? Female vocals drew comparisons to Madder Mortem, but the music reminds me more of an off-kilter, occasionally atonal Nevermore, mixed with a vaguely doomy/blackish/Norwegian sensibility. Lots of crunch & ...
