Re: Corretta - "I" - Concept Album

Listened to the first few tracks this morning and enjoyed what I heard. Very eclectic sound bouncing between different styles. Need to come back to this one as I think this will be right up my alley.

Re: First order of the year from The Lasers Edge .....

As I said, it's in my second Laser's Edge order of the year. This item sold out and has been removed from the site. My order will ship when this item will be back in stock.
Dang, never even saw that hit the site. Now I'm REALLY bummed.

Queensrÿche - The Verdict (2CD Box Set): Blind buy
Where did you find this one? I haven't been able to locate aside from Nuclear Blast EU, and the shipping charges were a killer.

Re: 3 "big" new releases this week, but ...

I discussed the debut here with "keifling" a few months ago I think, and I wasn't expecting them to put out a second album this quickly and especially not one of such high quality, but this disc is kicking my butt in all the right places. This is POWER METAL the way it's supposed to be. This remind...

Re: Devin Townsend - Empath

I got to listen to the whole record yesterday, and it was awful. Want to bang my head into the desk awful. None of it makes any sense as he bounces from idea to idea, none of the riffs or melodies are interesting, and there are myriad sections of ambient noise that add nothing. It will wind up bein...

Re: Dream Theater - Distance Over Time

One spin in only so far, and I'd best describe this as.... FAMILIAR. It's a completely safe album. Everything on here sounds instantly like vintage Dream Theater. Songs are concise, but all solid. One ballad out of 10 songs, and nothing that goes too far out into left field. Musically, this sits som...

Nice find, thanks for posting! I assume you saw the TSO version from the 2018 tour also?

Side note, but related: any idea what CIIC is up to nowadays? They've been dormant for some time now.... Zak is too good a singer to not be active beyond TSO.

Re: Early 2019 Releases...

Within Temptation - Not loving this. It's not BAD by any stretch, but it is absolutely a pop album that simply has some crunch to it. About half the songs have vocal lines that sound just like everything I hear my 10 year old daughter listen to on the radio, albeit with a better music score undernea...

Re: Early 2019 Releases...

First few discs of the year so far.... Soilwork - Solid album, sticking true to form but bringing in a few more traditional rock elements ala Night Flight Orchestra. More clean elements is a win for my ears. Not a fan of the addition of some of the blast beat drumming though. Neal Morse - Following ...

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade

Yes, and if we define "progressive metal" narrowly, I'd say the Arch/Matheos album and a Redemption album of one's choice also belong somewhere on the list...
Redemption for sure!

I'd take the John Arch EP over the Arch/Matheos, but that's nitpicking..... :)

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade

Great list..... I want to call out the inclusion of Adagio, as I think this was a MASSIVELY overlooked album when it came out. Folks seemed to expect "more of the same" from the band, and instead they took a definite turn in the more technical / prog approach that turned off a lot of folks. Bold cal...

Re: Dream Theater - "Distance Over Time" Album Teaser

Really?

It sounds painfully generic, and paint-by-numbers DT to me, and I'm the guy who put ADTOE #1 that year.
I'm fine with paint-by-numbers DT. Do what you do and do it well. This song fits perfectly. Sonically, this is a mix of "Train of Thought" and ADTOE.

This new song is FANTASTIC. It's everything I want in a Dream Theater song. Better than anything on the last two albums for sure.

Re: Top 50 Albums of 2018

21. Lost in Thought- Renascence: This was one of the bigger surprises of the year. I truly enjoyed the debut, but wasn't expecting them to come back this strong after a 7 year hiatus. The debut reminded me of the early Circus Maximus with soaring vocals prog. They have toned that down and headed in...

Re: Top 50 Albums of 2018

I swear..... This list gets more exotic every single year. Our top ten has a LOT in common, but beyond that..... Lots of stuff to sample, but can't say as I've even heard of much of this.

Solid song. Sounds more like the recent s/t album than "Condition Human", which is fine by me..... Love the lead guitar work on here.

So glad to see 'Ryche "relevant" again.

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread

I humbly add to this thread Magnitude 9 - Chaos to Control Good call on Mag9! I think they put out three discs total, and all were very solid. Corey Brown seemed to be fairly prolific for awhile, but in recent years has kind of fallen off the map. This band definitely had great chops, and Rob Johns...

Re: Queensryche new album & tour with Fates Warning

Hard to believe they are touring together finally. Don't you guys remember the Fates Warning / Dream Theater / Queensryche tour from back in the early 2000s? Granted, it was square in the middle of the 'Ryche's "ugly" era, but the set list was pretty much similar to the Live Evolution covering a lo...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread

CD Galileo/Nightmare Records (2007) singer is the same guy as Arkhe, guitarist is Gianluca Ferro, music is excellent, singing is ok, but this was a band that could have made some good music. But sadly another One and Done. Funny that you pull this one out! It was just about 1-2 years ago that I stu...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread

Mind Key - I know I have that first one, but I'll be darned if I remember anything about it. Italian Dream Theater influenced, it certainly sounds like the sort of thing I would blind buy. Will have to pull this back out. (Edit: OK, I remember these guys now that I'm listening to it. Very well compo...

I've been offline for pretty much ten days, so was thrilled to hear this thread was running and had 50+ responses!!! So many good bands already called out....
