Re: What are you listening to right now?
I am currently on a Night Ranger and Extreme binge ........ loved both of these bands in the 80s ........and still do. Both have two of the best guitarists ever in Brad Gillis (NR) and Nuno Bettencourt (EX). I've whipped out all of my DVD shows of these bands, and currently playing a Night Ranger s...

Re: Stone Fury & Kingdom Come
Man, I love Stone Fury and Lenny's voice so much. They only put out two albums...the second, Let Them Talk , is definitely some melodic cheese but I love the hell out of it (it was a favorite of Rifkin's as well...we didn't always see eye-to-eye, but on Stone Fury we did). The later Kingdom Come stu...

Re: Triumph: Rock & Roll Machine - A Documentary Film
It was a really fun watch (I paid for it on demand through Amazon IIRC). It was clearly something the band endorsed/produced so it glossed over a lot (and maybe that's why Progressions of Power got little mention given that I don't think it did much commercially) and had more focus on the get-a-life...
Re: Riverside
I agree they're an exceptional band, and I thought Wasteland was wonderful. I saw them on their US tour (hadn't gotten to see them at ProgPower) and was blown away. I know the loss of Piotr was huge, and he really is a special part of their earlier albums, but the songwriting and overall feeling/ton...

Re: How did you end up here?
Sometime around '98 for me; I was doing a web search (I think it was pre-Google..probably Alta Vista or something :D ) on Riot's Fire Down Under. I don't remember what I was looking for exactly, but it led me to the PM board and a post of Misfit's. Stuck around ever since (both boards actually) to s...

Re: Wow! Jason Bieler goes prog! And I'm in love!
Just listened to this for the first time. I really liked the first couple tracks, but struggled getting through the rest. It turns out I have the same problem with this that I tended to have with Saigon Kick: it's just stylistically all over the place. I have trouble getting into a groove with it an...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Thread
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61S9TGDGE5L.jpg There's a small handful of bands that immediately come to mind when I think of the category of great but criminally underrated rock/metal bands (one of them is Riot, although they aren't underrated among this knowledgeable group, but ...

Re: Does anyone care about Kamelot anymore ? New concert DVD....
There was a time that Kamelot was my favorite band on the planet, and I probably had a man-crush on Roy Khan. But even the last release w/ Roy was showing real stagnation in the songwriting. When Roy left I gave Silverthorn a chance, and while Tommy was more than competent, it was lacking the soul t...

Re: Riverside - thoughts?
I really like this band, and like things about just about all of their albums (except Eye of the Soundscape which just seems like a throwaway to me). I actually think Wasteland is wonderful. Gun to my head I would probably pick Shrine... as my favorite. I'm sad I never got to see them w/ Piotr, but ...

Re: Conception New Record in 2020
Such a strange mix of opinions on this. Personally I'm loving it and it's growing on me with each listen. And I'm with Claus and BC...."Of Ravens and Pigs" is the best song on the album. It's the only song that really tries to do something different, and it's also just a great song overall. Oh, and ...

Re: Whitesnake?
So for me Whitesnake, it's the eponymous album and that's it? or I'm missing something? For me, Slide it In is an essential Whitesnake album. As Claus said, it's sort of a mix between the older, bluesier stuff and the huge mainstream-rock sound they became known for. But get the US version (which w...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Neo-Prog Thread
This is less of an addition to this list and more of a question: Is Fish considered no-prog? His first couple of solo albums are so Marillion-esque that they almost HAVE to be, but he definitely became a little more mainstream / straight ahead rock for awhile..... I was just listening to one of his...

Re: Coma Rossi
I just listened to it after seeing the discussion here. In general I found the vocal melodies and songs pretty dull, *but* the instrumental track "Jomolumga Is Far Away" was amazing. I save that off to a Spotify playlist, but doubt I'll return to the album.

Re: Arena - Back Catalogue Discussion
#9 is (unfortunately) locked in at the bottom - I've tried and tried but in my opinion it's the only dud in their discography, and it might be the silly concept that kills it for me?! It's not horrible in any way, but it's the least listened of their discs with me. While I agree that Pepper's Ghost...

Re: Port Noir - The New Routine
I must have listened to this album a hundred times by now - there's absolutely nothing that comes remotely close to this as far as album of the year for me. It's just far and above anything else I've heard all year. I know this won't be music that sits well with most around here. It's not "prog met...

Re: Great songs from not-great albums
My choice would be "I'm in Love with My Car" from Queen's "A Night at the Opera". This is a proper rock song without the twee shenanigans that typically blight much of Queen's music and certainly the rest of the album. Whaaaaaa? You would discount "The Prophet's Song" and "Bohemian Rhapsody"? Heres...

Re: Neo-Prog: Where should I look now?
At the risk of being obvious, I would think you'd want to add Fish; while not all his solo material falls clearly into the neo-prog camp, his brilliant first solo album probably does. Other than that, you've got most of the ones I could think of off the top of my head. One that's missing (but probab...

Re: Port Noir - The New Routine
Just an update to say that I'm now all-in on this album. Yeah, there's some repetition in structure/melody on a couple songs, a blatant Beastie Boys homage/rip-off, and a clear aim at conquering the charts rather than paddling in the Katatonia and Tool-lite waters their earlier (and awesome) materia...

Re: Port Noir - The New Routine
I'll need to give it some more spins obviously, but I'm a little lukewarm on first listen. I loved "Old Fashioned", but it seems like "Flawless" is practically a carbon copy. That's the problem I'm having on first blush: everything on it sounds the same. I like the electronica touches that they were...

Gaetan -- I'll agree with Random Axe in that you get some fantastic songs from each disc and make a full disc of greats....... I never had the patience to do that, so I too gave up on the band many moons ago ...... You are right about Blueprint - it's their signature disc, but it gets weaker as it ...

Re: Port Noir - The New Routine
Checked them out and I do like them. The newer stuff seems a lot less heavier than the older stuff that I tried on YouTube such as "Sun dé man". Not a bad thing that it's less heavy...just an observation. Actually my favorite part so far is the drummer and then the vocals. Not sure what that means ...
