Re: New stuff Friday ...
This past weekend was all about Vanden Plas, My Dying Bride, and Blazing Eternity on repeat for me. I also tried Bend Sinister (but it's not quite my cup of tea), the new Pearl Jam album (didn't really like it too much), and Dvne "Voidkind" (sounds like a quality Mastodon/Tool kind of band). The Bla...

I agree 100% to what Larry says, it's an excellent album and I am very happy after my first few listens. Seems that this new release Friday is one of the better ones

I have yet to listen to My Dying Bride and Blazing Eternity, and thanks for mentioning Quantum, I will check them out as well. I saw Quantum name before, but the impression was not strong enough to trigger its addition to my "listen to" list. My take on a few new releases: Vanden Plas - The Empyrean...

Thanks for the review! I hope to see them live someday as well. It is amazing that newer tech/prog/djent bands get recognized and attract many people to their shows.

It's on my list of things to check out. I too have always been skipping out on them, but the reviews for "Moon Healer" hints at something I might enjoy. When did these guys become good? This is killer prog/tech death!!!! I always thought they were deathcore? Am I missing out on any of their other a...

Re: Psychotic Waltz Reissue and Re-mastered CDs and Vinyl
I'm leaning towards All, both Vinyl and CD :) . Good thing they're not all being released at once. My wallet will thank me. Looks like Laser CD has the cheapest price compared to other sites that are taking pre-orders. A few months timeframe is almost like "at once" to me. I will probably get all C...

Noor - Mother's Guilty Pleasure Part I Released in December, 2023, it's a pretty interesting debut album with a strange front cover and a very attacking and powerful metal style in the early power/speed metal way, mixing elements of the 80s Iron Maiden, Queensryche's early heavy/power metal songs, H...

Re: Knowing an Album
In today’s world, you can pretty much discover and listen to any band you want. You see many favorite lists and many weekly lists and lots and lots of albums. But, how often do you really know an album? Such as knowing all the lyrics or head banging moments or beats, etc? Yeah, I’ve heard plenty of...

Ihsahn's new S/T is probably his best work to date. It might take over from Arktis as my favorite at this rate. This track in particular made me sit up straight and focus Xf8XfGbre1g I also agree with this. I have never been a huge fan, but I listened to his earlier albums and this one I like most,...

Confessor - Condemned, 1991. It's a very specific and one-off band, and not a very easy listen. But I like occasionally returning to it, this mixture of technical progressive doom (Watchtower and Solitude Aeturnus?) has never been repeated. Prospekt - The Illuminated Sky, 2017. A fine album released...

North Sea Echoes - Really Good Terrible Things. It is always nice to hear the emotional melancholy crafted by of Alder and Matheos. I will certainly give it a few more spins, however how often I will come back to this after five years, I am not sure. Job for a Cowboy - Moon Healer. I was skipping th...

I have decided to revisit Shadow Gallery discography after quite some years. Carved in Stone is my absolute favorite, probably because this was their first their album I listened to. Then my ranking is 2) Tyranny, 3) Room V, 4) Legacy, 5) debut, 6) Digital Ghosts. I like Tyranny and Room V, I value ...

Thanks for mentioning Klone. I remember listening to them a bit a few years ago, but then just forgot about them. Now I listened to "Meanwhile" a few times and I like its calm and mellow kind of alt/prog metal.

Here's my top 20 for 2023. There are a bunch of bands here on 2-3 albums, so I feel like the future is certainly bright. I wrote these comments for my radio show listeners (all 5 of them!) so keep that in mind. Somehow a Melodic Death/Doom band is #1, but it's such a pretty album... --- 20. Sermon ...

This Friday is really rich in new releases. Claus, you were right about Eldritch - I gave it a number of spins and it's a very likeable power/prog album. Three singles released earlier seem stronger than the rest of the album, but time will tell. I like the 90s Eldritch a lot, subsequent albums in 0...

EINAR SOLBERG - 16 This guy ... man ... what a voice. I love Leprous, and I could listen to Einar sing all day long. This is honestly not a ton different from the last Leprous albums, except perhaps it's a bit more bringing in outside influences, not just prog and metal, but also hints of electroni...

Psychotic Waltz "God-Shaped Void" - Far and away my favorite PW album, and one of my top 5 albums of 2020. The Anchoret debut seems pretty interesting. I gave it a few spins and plan to listen more. The music has some mid-era Opeth vibes to me with long, intricate and constantly evolving songs. The style is not really the same though - Opeth have been arriving from death metal roots, and The Anchoret com...

Nine Orders - St. Thomas Gate (song) Spotify "recommended" me this band, I haven't heard them before. It's a new song and the album will be out this year. Melodic progressive metal of a slower kind (at least this song), the vibe reminds me a lot of Terra Odium's album from a couple of years ago. The...

New Katatonia and Riverside are pretty good albums. I haven't been a fan of either of those bands, but I am starting to appreciate them more and more, and keep playing both albums on repeat. I wish I could get into it. I just don't hear anything in it that moves me ... it's very mellow as you said, but it's like it never goes any further than just that ... a song is supposed to take the listener on a journey, and this is like standing at the pier waiting for the cruise ship to arrive s...

#09 Queensrÿche - Digital Noise Alliance Their best album since the 80s for me and the best with La Torre. Nuff’ said! https://youtu.be/W6btF3AotH0 I had very low expectations for Queensryche, I don't remember liking any of their albums after "Promised Land" except a few songs. However, this new al...

10. Voivod „Syncro Anarchy“ Voivod‘s cosmic experimental thrash style was unique in the late 80s, and the style is still unique today. I am happy that Voivod are back to their great form after a bit lackluster mid-era albums (to me their revival started with 2018's The Wake). 9. All Things Fallen „...
