Re: Where's Andromeda?
Hm. I had no idea about that but it apparently is true. I guess because I haven't seen DT since 2016, so I just missed his appearing.

Re: Speakers vs Headphones
I use headphones at work and speakers at home.
I like the sound of headphones but they tend to be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.
When my primary purpose of listening to music is for its energy, I stick to speakers.

This is the point where power metal phase-shifts into a higher plane of existence, leaving the rest of mundane humanity behind.

Re: Dream Theater - "Distance Over Time" Album Teaser
Other than I hate the guitar sound - not so much the recorded tone as the farty seven-string sound that Petrucci has been in love with since Octavarium - it's impossible to tell anything from this teaser. I fully expect to like the album in general because I like every DT album to some extent, even ...

Sure, but since that was 16 years ago I think it's fair to say they're well due for another round.

I generally like, but don't love, Haken. I think I like this new one substantially more than Affinity, though.

Re: New Seventh Wonder tune
The more I listen to this album the more I love it. I listened to it again specifically paying attention to the bass guitar and I was able to hear it throughout. Maybe because I "primed" myself to notice it after all the bass talk in this thread. But I am totally happy with every aspect of...

IMO this is just as good as their other good albums. Also, the second half is better as noted above.

Re: The Flower Kings: What album should I try first?
I got to see them once at ROSfest. Roine said he had a cold and his voice might not be a hundred percent that night. They uncorked several hours of the most stunning live performances I've ever seen. Their rendition of the song Stardust We Are was riveting and unforgettable. The two albums I started...

I feel similarly. Next year is going to be the "diet" ProgPower, because I'm not going to want to take time to eat.

I feel like luck smiled upon me, I went my whole life without seeing Amorphis and never knowing if I'd ever get to. Now in the past two-three years I suddenly have a ton of chances. Amorphis rules.

The interview is fantastic content-wise but having to listen to Gonzo's really loud breathing into his mic while Nick is talking is pretty irritating. Turn your head a little bit or something.

Re: Neal Morse - Similitude Live in Tilburg 2017 bluray....
I think one of the unsung qualities of Snow is that it's a long prog album that is not made up of very long songs. It thus places less demands on the listener's patience and attention span than do some prog albums with a shorter playing time. The new Similitude Blu-ray does not interest me, but I ab...

Re: 2018 So Far
As much as it sounds rock, my problem with it is that all 3 CDs sound the same and are boring as hell. Yeah, if a band is going to ask listeners to have the patience to stick with a very, very long studio album, then a sense of direction to the music is critical. It needs to feel like each song is ...

Re: 2018 So Far
Subsignal, Kamelot, Ostura, Therion, and Arena are all winners with me so far. I've got Melted Space on my list and need to catch up with Amorphis. Beyond that I likely won't find time to check out much but who knows.

I'm mostly excited about this one having a drummer. The last one was rendered pretty lifeless and barely-listenable due to the drum machine.

Re: SUBSIGNAL / La Muerta ..... first thoughts.
It being "light" is actually an encouragement for me. There's plenty of dark and heavy bands around that I can listen to when I want. Bands with such a sharp melodic sense like Subsignal (or Seventh Wonder, etc) and such strong vocal talent deserve as much appreciation as they can get.

A bit more from Labrie, delivered indirectly through the Dream Theater forums moderator bosk1. Re: Zero Hour - The Towers of Avarice
The thank-you list in the booklet for Towers of Avarice is how I found the Perpetual Motion board.
I can't remember what band ZH replaced at ProgPower in 2006 (Wastefall?) but they slayed as the replacement. The bass playing really stood out too - even moreso than it does on the albums.
