Re: Royal Hunt - Cast In Stone

I agree that something is a bit off with the vocals. RH is a band that has done some awesome work and then some pretty dull (IMO) albums. In this case the compositions are fine but the execution isn't quite what I'd hoped.

Re: 1988: More metal bands starting to add a progressive element to their music... (other albums of the 80s also accepte

I don't see any of these as progressive, personally. "The Warning" had a couple of progressive tracks (Roads to Madness, NM156 to an extent) but overall was a pretty straightforward metal album, albeit perhaps a little ahead of its time. "Night on Brocken" certainly didn't have ...

Re: Leprous w/ BtBaM & The Dear Hunter

The Boston traffic was even more horrific than expected, and despite getting off work early I still missed a couple songs from Leprous' set. They played a little range of their catalog despite the pretty short set. I came in while they were finishing up "Stuck." They also played "Illu...

Re: Shadow Gallery / Tyranny - the best ever.

Well, I'll say this... I liked their album _Room V_. That said, it's probably been almost 20 years since I last listened to _Tyranny_, so maybe I should give that another chance.

Edit: Yeah, no, not my thing. Like a punk band's caricature of what a prog band sounds like.

Re: A prediction that didn't come true

I don't mind Andre's vocals at all, but IMO his biggest contribution to early Angra was in contributing the more progressive sensibility to the songwriting. He did all the symphonic arrangements (yes, I realize many of them were just ripped off from classical masters, but they still added something ...

1984 also has a claim on being a special year. You could argue that it was the year of the first full-length progressive metal album: most likely QR's _The Warning_. But Warlord's _And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun..._ might have a claim to the title, as does Fates Warning's _NIght on Brock...

Leprous w/ BtBaM & The Dear Hunter

Going to this show in Boston tomorrow. I'm not a big fan of Between the Buried and Me and The Dear Hunter, but I'm still interested to see how they sound live. Unfortunately Leprous is the first band of three and for that reason surely won't play a long set. Even so, should be a good long night of p...

Psychotic Waltz were amazing back then - I saw them multiple times on those amazing 4 albums (when they toured Europe fairly regularly). Funny fact is that I really disliked Mosquito for a lot of years but one day it clicked and since then I’ve counted it just a good as the other 3. Heh... Same her...

A prediction that didn't come true

While listening to Angra's _OMNI_ today (don't bother), I distinctly recollected a discussion on the old board back when Angra split in half. Most of us were bemoaning the split, but someone interjected to say that out of one great band would come two great bands. Well, that didn't work out, did it?...

Re: Deathrow - Deception Ignored ... 2018 remaster

I'm going to disagree a little bit. Deception Ignored is my favorite Deathrow album, but I also believe Life Beyond (the next one) is worthy. It's still proggy, though less chaotic and more straightforward. For fans of stuff like Mekong Delta, both albums are absolutely worth checking out. _LB_ migh...

Endorse.

It took me a while to get into DT, actually. A roommate had I&W and Awake, and I was "meh" on them because I disliked keyboards. Had to get my ear attuned to the sound.

I got on FB in 2006 when it was just opening up to nonstudents. I hate it now and stay away. Nothing more than arguing about politics, memes, and people bragging about their lives. Thank goodness for this board.

All for bands trying new things, but I clearly don't get this.

The one Stryper album I like as a guilty pleasure now and then is To Hell with the Devil. Some sweet, silky melodies there. Like a poppier, sappier Crimson Glory.

11. SOEN / LYKAIA I'm behind the curve in just getting into this band. I've seen it described as a mix between mid-period Opeth and later Tool, and that sounds about right. Not *hugely* original, but the combination of elements is unique, nothing is "paint by numbers," and it's all at qui...

Re: SORCERER / The Crowning of the Fire King ........

Candlemass is a bit slower than Sorcerer and has fewer little guitar hooks - it's somewhat simpler music. But their first four albums are all classics in my view. Not very proggy (though their _Chapter VI_ album has a noticeable prog influence, with keys and a more trebly singer), but not the sludgy...

Delain - Really had never checked them out, as I had thought they were going to be just a little TOO poppy for my tastes, ala Amaranthe. Good call on Enslaved. They will be top 3 for me this year as well, which is really surprising, because they've always been "pretty good but not outstanding" for me in the past.
