Re: New Stryper - WOW! ...

All for bands trying new things, but I clearly don't get this.

The one Stryper album I like as a guilty pleasure now and then is To Hell with the Devil. Some sweet, silky melodies there. Like a poppier, sappier Crimson Glory.

Not a fan of the beeps or siren either, but I understand the reasoning behind the beeps.

I'm liking it so far. Not sure I'd rate it as high as Mabool, but I'll keep listening.

Lots of good suggestions. Also "Lazarus" by Porcupine Tree and "Om Hundrede Aar Er Alting Glemt" by Lumsk.

I remember when that disc was a big deal on these boards, but at the time I was a poor college student and had to prioritize purchases. Never got that one, or Payne's Gray, or some of the other stuff that looked "straight prog" to me. (At that time I was more into the Gothenburg scene.) *...

Re: Digital Man's Top 10 Of 2017

STEVEN WILSON - Brilliant musician. That said, I have bought most of his solo material, and I have stopped. I just cannot get into his solo stuff. It's slow, depressing, and dry.......Cool to see you digging him so much. +1 Wish he'd do more PT-type stuff, but I get the feeling he sees that kind of...

11. SOEN / LYKAIA I'm behind the curve in just getting into this band. I've seen it described as a mix between mid-period Opeth and later Tool, and that sounds about right. Not *hugely* original, but the combination of elements is unique, nothing is "paint by numbers," and it's all at qui...

Top 23 of 2017

Why Top 23? Well, this is sort of a cutoff between those albums I found worthy of purchasing on CD and those I merely plan to stream from time to time. But this is all subject to change, especially as I don't get to listen to quite as much new stuff as some of you & am still digesting & disc...

Re: SORCERER / The Crowning of the Fire King ........

Candlemass is a bit slower than Sorcerer and has fewer little guitar hooks - it's somewhat simpler music. But their first four albums are all classics in my view. Not very proggy (though their _Chapter VI_ album has a noticeable prog influence, with keys and a more trebly singer), but not the sludgy...

That's fair, but several of the rhythm guitar riffs are ripped straight out of _Epicus Doomicus Metallicus_ and _Nightfall_.

This is a solid album, and the vocals are certainly great, but does it bother anyone else how derivative they are of Candlemass?

Re: 2017 back catalogue additions...

Delain - Really had never checked them out, as I had thought they were going to be just a little TOO poppy for my tastes, ala Amaranthe. They walk a fine line, but for the most part I enjoy Delain quite a bit, as they just toe the line of being too bubble-gummy. The first Delain disc is amazing but...

Good call on Enslaved. They will be top 3 for me this year as well, which is really surprising, because they've always been "pretty good but not outstanding" for me in the past.

The Wobbler is a fun one. Might not make my top 10-15, but definitely something I'll listen to now & again.

Re: Warrel Dane / Sanctuary & Nevermore... R.I.P.

Mind officially blown. Only 48 years old, and dead of a heart attack. I saw Nevermore two or three times back in the day, and he was just as exceptional live as in the studio. Some are saying he wasn't really 48. The 1st Sanctuary album was... 1988 or thereabouts? He probably wasn't 18 or 19 then. ...

Re: Galactic Cowboys - Long Way Back to the Moon (November 17, 2017)

^I agree with this. Closer to groove-metal than prog, like a heavied-up _Machine Fish_, with some of the nasty bass licks of _Space in Your Face_. Beatlesesque vocal harmonies intact. Overall, a good album even though not in the main stream of what I normally listen to. It might even creep into my t...

Like Larry, I'm a bit allergic to the electronics. There is one, atypical song on this album that is very much to my taste, however: "A Thousand Shards of Heaven." More acoustic and organic.

My 2nd favorite PoS, after Remedy Lane. It was most certainly a fresh, striking sound when it dropped back in the late 90s: prog without aping anything that had come before.

Atypical vocalists are not a problem and can even be an advantage in carving out a distinct identity. Some people will be turned off, while others are attracted. Now, I haven't seen Haken live, but on recording the vocals sound... a bit low-energy. It's not a problem with carrying a tune, but it has...

DT has been a bit meh for a long time, but IMO Haken isn't elite until they have an elite vocalist. Now, I'm not the sort of person who cares a lot about vocals in music relative to the instrumental performances, but I'm analyzing the question just from the perspective of "prog cult" poten...

Tough call, but gotta give #1 to Anathema, WHBWH. Number two? Alcest, _Voyages de l'Ame_ (does that count as prog metal in the broadest sense?). Number three... probably Vektor, _Outer Isolation_ (same question). Number four... probably Big Big Train, _Folklore_ (not metal, but definitely prog). Hon...
