Recommendations experiment results thread

I've been working away at this project, and there are a few interesting results to start off with, though also some new reasons to make me think the whole concept is a lot more difficult than I initially thought. I got 6 sets of album ratings, including my own. Of those, 4 were large files with 1000...

Re: Prospekt - The Illuminated Sky

If you're going to rely on some influences, those are good ones to have... :) And yes, I principally hear mid-period SX as well, at least in the tasty riffage.

Re: Instructions for the prog & metal recs engine experiment

I'd rate a lot more than that. I'd say if you have 200 or more ratings, the algorithm is likely to give you some useful results. BTW, if you know that something is just not what you're into, you could always give it some arbitrary low rating. Again, I've made these really diverse so that the stats w...

Re: Prospekt - The Illuminated Sky

This is quite solid, very well played, & might go on my purchase list. But the band does suffer a bit from Circus Maximus syndrome in wearing their influences on their sleeves. Not the most original songs in the world, but still fun to listen to.

Instructions for the prog & metal recs engine experiment

All right, folks, it's go time! :D The rules are pretty simple: ⋅  Write up a spreadsheet with at least three columns, one each for band name, album title, and rating. It can be in just about any format. CSV is preferred, but XLS is fine. TXT works too. Here's what mine looks like: https:/...

A board experiment? Statistical engine for metal & prog music recs

If you're like me, you find it hard to get good musical recommendations without doing a lot of work reading reviews, maybe exploring Pandora, etc. Amazon's recommendations engine isn't terrible, but one of its flaws is an exclusive focus on new releases. For those of us who like to explore good musi...

And I concede putting Once tops in their discography is not as crazy as, say, putting Century Child there. Now THEM'S fightin' words!!! What's wrong with "Century Child"??? I'd honestly have to go back and listen to the whole catalogue again to even try to name my single favorite, but I k...

Re: The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time according to Rolling Stone magazine

TBQH, I haven't listened to a Nightwish album since that 2007 one. I didn't even know Floor Jansen had joined the band. Partly (mostly?) that is just my being out of the music loop entirely for a while, but partly it's a result of a band's losing fans once they release a couple of mediocre albums an...

Re: The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time according to Rolling Stone magazine

It was fun listening to Once again after having ignored it for a decade or more. That said, I was reminded of what bothered me about it before. I dislike the highly compressed production and the reliance on downtuned, staccato rhythm guitar riffs. It's certainly not nu-metal (them's fightin' words),...

Re: So is anyone else in a musical rut this year besides me ?

If I was deep into prog metal, I would probably agree with you. I can't think of much in that mold that has caught my interest at all. However, I'm not the most metal of people anyway, so I've found plenty of stuff in other genres to enjoy. In fact, while there are more downright awful releases thi...

_The Show That Never Ends_ by Dave Weigel

I recently picked up this new book on the history of progressive rock & read it in a day while sitting in airplanes and airports. It is a compelling, story-driven, readable account of the originators and big beasts of prog, especially in the late 60s and 70s, although there is also some discussi...

RFO was a grower for me back in the day. At one time my fave QR release was their debut EP, followed by Mindcrime and then at some distance by Empire. I even traded it away. Maybe 15 years ago I got back into it. All-time classic for sure, though I'd still put Mindcrime above it.

Re: I "might" have to go digital soon .... need some ideas.

You don't have to go "full digital"; you can go a bit more digital on the margin. That's what I've done. For albums that I'm interested in hearing but probably won't listen to often, I use a streaming service (used to use Rhapsody/Napster, now Amazon). The advantage of using a streaming se...

Looks as if they are playing a better venue in Boston than they did the last time they were here. Saw them on the tour with Alcest, and the sound quality in the basement they played was horrid. But the place they're playing this time is a nice theater-like venue, saw King's X there not long ago.

Streaming KT right now and digging it. May end up getting on CD. Those who insist on Kamelotesque production values will dislike it, and it's quite thrashy, but it already has the pleasurable dissonance of their later work - definitely proggy in parts. Those who like the chromatic scale (cf. late-pe...
