Cool! I really their _Waist Deep in Dark Waters_ EP. WHW's Tom Phillips wrote 1 or 2 of the songs on that I believe.

[*] Deafheaven, _Ordinary Corrupt Human Love_ “Hipster” black metal band continues to progress & impress. What makes them “black metal for people who don’t like black metal” is their frequent use of major keys and generally “uplifting” affect. Plus, for American listeners, there’s a Pacific-coa...

Great list. Some things here I had not heard of or didn't know about and will explore further. Didn't know that In the Woods... had dropped a new album, for instance. On Primordial... In my book they are one of the best metal bands of the past quarter-century. They released four superb albums in a r...

Re: All-genre top 22 of the year

Voivod is a band that has put out a lot of individual good songs over the course of their career but never really put together a full album that I would count as a masterpiece. I do not agree. To me "Dimension Hatröss" is a masterpiece from start to finish. Kind of album you listen concen...

All-genre top 22 of the year

The tradition with these things is to go bottom to top, but it was easier for me to organize the other way! Despite making the effort to listen to a lot of stuff outside metal and prog, I wasn't overly impressed with a lot of jazz, dream pop, or world music this year, to list three genres I often ex...

Re: Digital Man's Top 10 Of 2018

Not necessarily “nu-metal” but definitely an attempt at going in a much more polished/modern direction. To me it sounds like an oriental version of Epica style power/symphonic metal. “All is One” wasn’t back to full fledged “middle eastern prog” but it was more focused and unique that OrWarrior. Wi...

*** Is it safe to say that OrWarrior is their most progressive release ? Could that be it ? On the contrary - besides the first two (more “oriental doom metal”) OrWarrior is the least proggy but more song/melody oriented of their albums. Mabool is full fledged prog metal if you ask me. I went back ...

Koenjihyakkei - Dhorimviskha

For the one other avant-garde fan on this board... There's a new(-ish) album from this Japanese outfit associated with Tatsuya Yoshida of Ruins and Korekyojinn. Unlike Korekyojinn, Koenjihyakkei doesn't have much metal in it, but it's definitely weird and experimental from the many-small-notes schoo...

When I think about awesome demos from unsigned bands that didn't translate well to official album format, I think about an obscure gothic/dark metal band from Italy called Greyswan. They put out an excellent demo in 2001 or 2002 and then were signed and released an LP called _Thought-Tormented Minds...

I always enjoy reading your list Glenn. Re: I Did not officially say yet what is my favorite album of the 70s...

About Genesis - Foxtrot, to me, it's not very melodic, I barely hear the guitar and I don't hear a hard rock influence (it's not rock enough for me). Ah, I see. If you have a strong taste for guitar solos, you'll rarely find that in 70s prog, to be sure. It's more about the interplay of the differe...

Cool thread. Out of the albums you have, my favorite would probably be Rush, _2112_, but some kind of honorable mention has to go to Deep Purple's _Machine Head_, which I have never purchased simply because all the best tracks, which make up about half the album, have been in heavy enough radio rota...

Not on Bandcamp, unfortunately, but if you have a streaming service and just want to sample, I recommend the final, 12-minute track, "Sonic Mycelium," which runs from mathy tech-metal to complex, Stravinskyesque string orchestrations.

New Voivod album (The Wake) is worthy

Just got around to listening to this album, released about two months ago. It's quite good, in my opinion, likely the best of their post-reunion era. It's a nice mix of semi-thrashy and more subdued, noodling bits. Quite technical/prog.

Not as obscure as some of the mentions here, but I am curious what the general opinion is on TOC, _Loss Angeles_ (Spinefarm, 2003). Re: New Riverside in September....

Think some of you might be underrating this album a touch. I don't think the loss of the second guitarist is really obvious. The more noticeable change for me is the diminished role for the keyboards. There's a more stripped-down, acoustic feel to large sections of this album, although _LFTM_ previe...

I liked the debut album but not enough over the long run to hold onto it. I have a CD-R of it somewhere but haven't listened to it in years. One of those albums that had lots of good hooks but not too much staying power - or at least, so I thought some years ago.

Merkabah - _Million Miles_ (2017)

For fans of mathematical, dense, semi-improvisational, instrumental music a la EX EYE or Lye by Mistake, but not without hooks. Good sax performances. Drumming also mind-bending at moments. Bits of post-rock ambience break up the chaos (some of these quieter passages drag a bit). https://merkabahpl....
