Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Power Metal Thread
Not a huge fan of this genre, but I'll play... Swedish female-fronted crunch metallers Amaran should fit here. Both of their albums, _A World Depraved_ and _Pristine in Bondage_, are worthy, but I slightly prefer the former. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQdZL8Iknvk This might count more as speed ...

Re: New Katatonia
Maybe I should listen to this. I kinda burned out on Katatonia when the first couple albums after _LFDGD_ seemed subpar, and then I saw them open for Opeth in '08 and they kinda sucked. If they're doing something different now it may relight the fire.

I haven't listened to MDB since _Light at the End of the World_. Tried a few of their more recent albums, but too generic and samey. Will give this a listen. I made the same mistake after that exact album as well for a good while (I found the following albums to be generic just like you mentioned) ...

For the new one, I can't really find it is "The most" what because the album don't really have its own identity. Like Claus said, we hear a little bit of each previous albums. It seems that was the approach when they made the album instead of going for a new sound like they did for each previous al...

Madder Mortem, _Marrow_
I didn't see any discussion of this album on the forum, so I thought I'd post something. It came out in 2018 but it's a fairly recent discovery for me. It's a fantastic album and definitely retroactively belongs in my top five of that year. The band is known as "avant-garde metal," but that descript...

Heh. This list definitely shows the evolution of my tastes over time. I should definitely dig up more albums from the past that I've missed in styles I now enjoy... 2010 1. Sigh - Scenes from Hell 2. Mekong Delta - Wanderer at the Edge of Time 2011 1. Korekyojinn - Tundra 2. Anathema - We're Here Be...

For me the Darkwater just is not that original. It's not where my head is at these days. It's not bad and I understand why people like it. Expertly executed and with some appealingly familiar figures, no doubt, but this kind of stuff just gets crowded out by everything else. Same feeling about Vande...

Re: Nos' Year-End Recap (Bests & Worsts)
Have you guys heard the last Flight of Sleipnir album, _Skadi_? They got pigeonholed as stoner, which I don't generally like, but it's retro 70s prog rock meets doom metal with some unique elements. One of my top 10 of whatever year it came out ('17? '18?). I've spent a day with "Skadi" now, and wh...

Some nice picks and some things I had missed. I'm still working my way through the year and probably won't have a best-of list this time until January. Soen, Devin, Artificial Language, Thank You Scientist, Myrath, Insomnium, and The Dark Element will all definitely be high for me. If you like avant...

Arch/Matheos - Winter Ethereal (Arch is a shitty singer. Slurring is failure) Slurring? Shitty? Oh well ... I can barely make out a quarter of the lyrics. Re: Theodore - Anathema ripoffs for the hipster NPR set
Interesting ... I hear no Anathema in it at all, but instead a lot of Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Muse, Woodkid and other indie / alt rock stylings. While I like some of this style it also has a tendency to get boring fast. This year the best in that style to me comes from Paul Masvidal (yeah the Cynic d...

Anyone else heard these guys? https://www.npr.org/2019/04/16/714014928/theodore-tiny-desk-concert OK, "Anathema ripoffs" might be uncharitable - they both draw on Pink Floyd, so it's certainly possible Theodore have no inspiration from Anathema at all, but Anathema did this kind of thing way earlier.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but it was my first time seeing Anneke live. Amorphis/Delain/Anneke
Saw this show at the good ol' Palladium on Saturday. Smaller crowd than I would have liked to see, but all concerned put up a bang-up show. Anneke played a set of covers, just her voice and a steel-string. She has a certain charisma on stage that the crowd responded well to. I enjoyed hearing her pe...

Just wanted to say this remains one of my favorite releases of the year still. I think it may be the best thing they've done to date. Mature, highly accessible songwriting with eclectic influences: folky, a bit proggy, occasionally atmospheric, and a pleasing mix of metal and lighter rock.

Finally got around to listening to this. It *is* a bit hipsterish, but not too much for my tastes. The djent is sparing, and there are enjoyable neoclassical and jazz fusion flourishes all over the place. It reminded me a bit of Animals as Leaders. It will definitely be somewhere in my top albums of...

I guess I should qualify "huge." Not outdoor stadiums that seat tens of thousands, but indoor arenas that seat thousands. See for instance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8uH2kmun60 .
