Cool stuff. We certainly have a couple places of agreement, and it's nice to see age hasn't completely ruined us yet.

Nos' Top Ten Albums Of 2017

At the end of every year, I look back at all the music I've listened to, and I come to the same basic conclusion. No matter the changing roster of bands, or the number of albums I listen to, the result is that I usually have right around ten albums that I feel strongly enough about to want to put on...

The song is ok, but nothing more. Frankly, Fabio is so over-exposed at this point (he has another album coming out in January(?) too) that I can't be interested in hearing his name.

Re: Top 50 of 2017

We have more overlap this year than most. The Dark Element, Soen, Orden Ogan, and Nocturnal Rites are all going to feature on my list (posting Sunday, I think), but in different orders. They're all great records. The one thing I would say is that this time around, Soen has become less Tool, and far ...

Not a big order - and maybe my last of the year, but it does contain a Top 10 disc for me ............. The Dark Element / Annette Olzon - Bought the MP3s off Amazon the moment it came out, but I wanted the CD as this thing shot right into my Top 10 upon first listen. Lots has already been said abo...

Re: Jono - “Life” - great vocalist

Anyway, I really disagree with you on this one haha - I think that your opinion that the songs are “limp and devoid of melody” is your opinion and that’s fine, however that it sounds like Savatage to you shows a bit about your limited knowledge of music history. This is not a metal band at all; thi...

Re: Jono - “Life” - great vocalist

So I just listened to this album this morning. I have to say, while he's a very good singer, good grief is the music boring. It's sort of like "Streets" or "Gutter Ballet" era Savatage, but without any of the grit, intensity, or great songs. The whole thing is basically his voice...

This is such a bad ass disc ........ fun, catchy, upbeat and headbanging all at the same time. I'm glad she found her niche ......her previous solo disc was excellent, but this one far exceeds it in every way. I know the female fronted bands have gone by the wayside around here, but this is a great...

Forgive me if my commentary is short, but I've already written plenty about this album in other places. Add me to the chorus who are loving this one. I've been listening to it for a few weeks now, and it still sounds just as good as the first time. Anette sounds fantastic, and I appreciate that they...

Re: SORCERER / The Crowning of the Fire King ........

I talked about it on the other boards. I love this album. I'm not a doom person either, but this isn't really doom in the normal sense. There is definitely that Tony Martin-era Sabbath feel to a lot of it, but I've been calling it 'slow power metal', since that's what it reminds me of. It's heavy wi...

That is great news, as I greatly enjoyed 85% of the last album, and the new long track from the live album, but did it really have to be a concept album? In general, I'm just sick of them. There are just way too many of them now.

Sons of Apollo - I wonder how much of this was worked out before hitting the studio as opposed to writing/recording on the fly. When he's with Neal Morse - well, Morse is a demos guy. But Portnoy is not - he works an insane schedule and trusts in his talent to be enough when he hits the studio. So ...

The Dark Element- The Dark Element: I have a soft spot for Annette’s vocals. This is the same situation as Cain’s Offering where you take vocals and add music that fits them perfectly. The bouncy Nightwish riffs are a total win for me. I enjoyed the shit out of it. I love Anette too. Alyson Avenue'...

Two of them, actually. I like "Black Clouds..." too, but "ADTOE" more. I thought those two albums found Petrucci (and Portnoy) settling in and writing better vocal lines for James than they did on "Images & Words" and that era. Unfortunately, they didn't keep that ...

My favorite album of the decade isn't really up for debate. I'm too attached to one thing totally not right for around here to look fairly. In terms of prog and metal, though, I would say my picks would be between two; either Dream Theater's "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" or Transatlantic's ...

Interesting, but they're a bit of a one-album wonder to me. I love "Waves Of Visual Decay", but that's the only thing of theirs that's ever interested me at all. I'll give it a shot, of course. They've got a sound I like, so there's always hope.

The album is good. I'm not excited about it being a concept, but the music is good, with a few King Diamond moments to it. I prefer "Mirrorworld" to this one, but the gap isn't huge.

And yes, Urban does sing less at full volume than he used to.

Like with the first song, my opinion is that this is a Threshold song that sounds like every other Threshold song. I can't imagine sitting through two entire discs of this stuff, even though it's good. Way too much of the same thing. And that guitar tone is horrible. There's so much gain the muted n...

I didn't care at all for the last album. They had a few too many djent-isms for my taste. This isn't far from that, but I like the melodic sense a lot more. This one's pretty good, and now I might check out the album when it comes out. I was planning to skip it before.

That new song is fine, and Glynn sounds good, but Threshold has really become bland lately. It's not just that they're playing the same sound, but the songs themselves are interchangeable. I can't get excited when I can hardly tell one song from the next.
