Everything Goldy has done without Dio guiding him has been awful for ages now. I have no hope at all for this.

#7 The Dark Element s/t - This is just a straight up FUN disc, especially given how disappointing the last Nightwish album was. While this doesn't attempt the complexities or orchestrations of Nightwish, it allows Annette's melodic side to open up 100%, giving each song hooks galore. She definitely...

11. SOEN / LYKAIA I'm behind the curve in just getting into this band. I've seen it described as a mix between mid-period Opeth and later Tool, and that sounds about right. Not *hugely* original, but the combination of elements is unique, nothing is "paint by numbers," and it's all at qui...

Just a bit of constructive criticism:

I get the idea of surprising the reader, but maybe once you get to #1, you can put up a page with the whole list on it. I'm sorry, but I don't feel like clicking through thirty pages to find out what you picked, and make some comments on them.

No, because I don't feel like they are. Candlemass, at least from everything I've heard, is not nearly as detailed, lush, or melodic as Sorcerer is here.

Interested to hear what they sound like on a sophomore effort, but this debut is sadly inconsistent to me. If there's a sophomore effort. I wouldn't be surprised if there was turnover in the ranks should such a thing happen, if it even does. I get the impression they were hoping for bigger sales an...

Good question. There was one for me, which was very coincidental. I was listening to Alyson Avenue's "Presence Of Mind" for the first time in a while, and it clicked with me that it isn't just good, but damn amazing. So I listened to that a ton, and figured I needed to actually go out and ...

Nos' Top Ten Albums Of 2017

At the end of every year, I look back at all the music I've listened to, and I come to the same basic conclusion. No matter the changing roster of bands, or the number of albums I listen to, the result is that I usually have right around ten albums that I feel strongly enough about to want to put on...

The song is ok, but nothing more. Frankly, Fabio is so over-exposed at this point (he has another album coming out in January(?) too) that I can't be interested in hearing his name.

We have more overlap this year than most. The Dark Element, Soen, Orden Ogan, and Nocturnal Rites are all going to feature on my list (posting Sunday, I think), but in different orders. They're all great records. The one thing I would say is that this time around, Soen has become less Tool, and far ...

Anyway, I really disagree with you on this one haha - I think that your opinion that the songs are “limp and devoid of melody” is your opinion and that’s fine, however that it sounds like Savatage to you shows a bit about your limited knowledge of music history. This is not a metal band at all; thi...

Re: Jono - “Life” - great vocalist

So I just listened to this album this morning. I have to say, while he's a very good singer, good grief is the music boring. It's sort of like "Streets" or "Gutter Ballet" era Savatage, but without any of the grit, intensity, or great songs. The whole thing is basically his voice...

I talked about it on the other boards. I love this album. I'm not a doom person either, but this isn't really doom in the normal sense. There is definitely that Tony Martin-era Sabbath feel to a lot of it, but I've been calling it 'slow power metal', since that's what it reminds me of. It's heavy wi...

That is great news, as I greatly enjoyed 85% of the last album, and the new long track from the live album, but did it really have to be a concept album? In general, I'm just sick of them. There are just way too many of them now.

The Dark Element- The Dark Element: I have a soft spot for Annette’s vocals. This is the same situation as Cain’s Offering where you take vocals and add music that fits them perfectly. Two of them, actually. I like "Black Clouds..." too, but "ADTOE" more. I thought those two albums found Petrucci (and Portnoy) settling in and writing better vocal lines for James than they did on "Images & Words" and that era. Unfortunately, they didn't keep that ...

The album is good. I'm not excited about it being a concept, but the music is good, with a few King Diamond moments to it. I prefer "Mirrorworld" to this one, but the gap isn't huge.

And yes, Urban does sing less at full volume than he used to.

I didn't care at all for the last album. They had a few too many djent-isms for my taste. This isn't far from that, but I like the melodic sense a lot more. This one's pretty good, and now I might check out the album when it comes out. I was planning to skip it before.
