Re: Question about Praying Mantis - for you AoR people....

I've heard the new Praying Mantis album already, and since it's germane to the conversation, I'll say it was severely underwhelming to me. I'll give you that he's a pretty good singer, but the band is sounding pretty weak right now. They can't give him the showcase he needs. Did you like the previo...

Now there's some prog metal I can get behind. That sounds really good, and certainly way better than what Tommy does to afford being in Seventh Wonder.

I got the same promo with the same restrictions, but it doesn't bother me much. I have never had a problem forming an opinion on that many or fewer listens. With as much stuff as is put there, I don't know where I would have the time to listen to everything I review ten times before writing. I could...

Re: The post about re-masters ....... good or bad ?

My take is that re-mastering is largely a sham. There's only so much you can do by pushing the volume a bit louder, or running a filter to boost a few frequencies. They might sound better in the sense they are louder or shinier like a new album, but that's usually at the expense of the original dyna...

It's pretty good, but I couldn't make it through the whole record more than once. All I could think about was just how damn loud the thing was, with absolutely no room to breathe. Unless there was something off with the promo that got sent out, it's a victim of the Loudness War.

Sounds like they were responding to/implementing fan requests. Sweet has really lost the plot, and has started talking out of his ass. It's "art", but he did it because the fans told him to..... He's starting to go down the Portnoy route, where he's incapable of accepting that people don'...

Re: New Stryper - WOW! ...

It's a complete pile of trash. Michael Sweet can't seem to get over the fact that people don't equate Stryper with heaviness, and in his mid-life crisis, is trying pathetically to make himself something he never was. When you brag about only spending at most two weeks writing each of the two or thre...

Re: Death of CD's finally?...

I hope it isn't. I don't buy many CDs, but I do still buy my few favorites every year, and a few from the past I never got around to. I'm not old enough to be old-school, but music feels to ephemeral when it isn't connected to something you can look at and hold. I'm still disappointed that my favori...

It is good, except for one thing that I've been complaining about since the first song got pre-released..... There's no point in this being a duet album. The two singers sound so much alike that it's hard to tell who is doing what, and the album would be no different if either one had done all the v...

#7 The Dark Element s/t - This is just a straight up FUN disc, especially given how disappointing the last Nightwish album was. While this doesn't attempt the complexities or orchestrations of Nightwish, it allows Annette's melodic side to open up 100%, giving each song hooks galore. She definitely...

11. SOEN / LYKAIA I'm behind the curve in just getting into this band. I've seen it described as a mix between mid-period Opeth and later Tool, and that sounds about right. Not *hugely* original, but the combination of elements is unique, nothing is "paint by numbers," and it's all at qui...

No, because I don't feel like they are. Candlemass, at least from everything I've heard, is not nearly as detailed, lush, or melodic as Sorcerer is here.

Interested to hear what they sound like on a sophomore effort, but this debut is sadly inconsistent to me. If there's a sophomore effort. Good question. There was one for me, which was very coincidental. I was listening to Alyson Avenue's "Presence Of Mind" for the first time in a while, and it clicked with me that it isn't just good, but damn amazing. So I listened to that a ton, and figured I needed to actually go out and ...

At the end of every year, I look back at all the music I've listened to, and I come to the same basic conclusion. Anyway, I really disagree with you on this one haha - I think that your opinion that the songs are “limp and devoid of melody” is your opinion and that’s fine, however that it sounds like Savatage to you shows a bit about your limited knowledge of music history. This is not a metal band at all; thi...

So I just listened to this album this morning. I have to say, while he's a very good singer, good grief is the music boring. It's sort of like "Streets" or "Gutter Ballet" era Savatage, but without any of the grit, intensity, or great songs. The whole thing is basically his voice...

I talked about it on the other boards. I love this album. I'm not a doom person either, but this isn't really doom in the normal sense. There is definitely that Tony Martin-era Sabbath feel to a lot of it, but I've been calling it 'slow power metal', since that's what it reminds me of. It's heavy wi...
