Re: Anathema-The Optimist....

Count me in the group that didn't like it. Granted, I've never been a fan of that kind of ambient/post rock stuff, but I gave it an honest chance. I don't hear anything in that sound for me.

Labyrinth "Architecture of a God" - With the addition of Oleg Smirnoff and John MacAluso, I had high expectations for this disc, and while it doesn't disappoint it also doesn't "WOW" me like I would have hoped. Everything on here is rock solid; great performances all around, the...

Re: HELKER - Firesoul

It's solid. Diego is the best Dio clone out there.

Side note; it's probably just me, but I think "Master Of The Moon" is the most underrated Dio album. It's slow, but really good. Goldy's my favorite of Dio's guitar players (solo band only, obviously).

Re: THE FERRYMEN - The Ferrymen (Romero, Karlsson, Terrana)

Has he EVER been involved in something "truly interesting"? He writes good, solid 80's inspired hard rock / metal-lite material that in theory should be a tailor made for Jorn's stylings. I don't pretend to know how much involvement Sinner had versus Beyrodt on the albums they work togeth...

...listening to the new Jorn track also, and both Ferrymen tracks are better than this one. It's Jorn, so it's not bad at all, but I was hoping for something a little more engaging with Matt Sinner and Alex Beyrodt onboard. Really? When was the last time Sinner was involved in something truly inter...

Re: THE FERRYMEN - The Ferrymen (Romero, Karlsson, Terrana)

I liked the first track, but this one's not nearly as good. It feels tired and completely by-the numbers. It's exactly why I worry about Frontiers having songwriters making far too many albums. They deplete their best ideas for projects that make one album and disappear.

I don't really get why everyone is so hot for Ronnie's voice, but he's ok, and the song is pretty darn good. They come out the same day, so I'm going to wager on this winding up being better than Jorn's new album.

Re: Glynn Morgan returns to THRESHOLD!

Glynn Morgan has to re-record all vocals, otherwise it would make no sense... Who knew Threshold would ever have something in common with Quiet Riot (or what's left of them) who are facing the very same situation this year!! It's also a great way to kill interest in the album, for both bands....

Sounds to me like there's more to the story. This coming so out of the blue, even to Damian, is weird.

But since they can't bring Mac back, I can't say anything they do is all that exciting to me.

I've been trying to block it from my memory, lol. I listened to it just enough to write a review, and that was more than enough for me. I completely agree with you that it's a melody free snore of a time. The thought I kept having through the whole thing was "why did they make this album?"...

Frontiers has done a lot of good work with the melodic rock and metal world, keeping people's careers going when the other labels thought them past their time, and finding good new talent. I'm not sure I'm as much a fan of all these projects they keep putting together, in this style. Sure, several o...

I'm enjoying this album very much, and getting more from the prior two albums that I'd largely ignored as well. I really miss Lopez in Opeth, so hearing him in this ToOpeth band scratches an itch that neither original band has managed in a decade. This is easily my favorite album of the year so far...

This is a solid release, but in no way on the level of Blackwater Park imo. BP has far more interesting, and involved song structures with those long, glorious instrumental passages. Theocracy/Ghost Ship - I'll start this summary by stating I only previously owned the debut and only liked a few of those songs. I don't know, I just can't get into Ayreon at all. Sure, there's lots of musical ideas, but I feel like Arjen writes too much to the story, and the songs suffer for it. I stumbled across this the other day, and it sounds like something that would fit in well here. I never know whether to call this prog or not (no, I'm not trying to start that debate again). Thanks to Kiske and even Tate, Avantasia was interesting enough to get a solid ranking and stay in my collection but it's hard not to skip many of the songs. 'Mystery of a Blood Red Rose' gets my vote for most annoying song of the year. (And maybe last year too). Awful. Aww man. I'm a huge Meat Loa...

Was a bit underwhelmed by the Serious Black. Thought it was a bit on the lighter side overall, and that Urban's voice, while excellent, was quite smooth, without the edge he had while in Tad Morose.
