Re: I'm stuck in a 3-way decision for disc of the year......

I have my #1 settled, and is has been for a while.Actually, I think nine of my top ten is set by now. Most of my favorite stuff wasn't metal yet again this year, and certainly wasn't prog metal.

I did give Kingcrow a chance, but I don't connect with it at all. I guess I'm more of a rocker at heart.

The cynical (and somewhat true) take would be that's because the good singers want nothing to do with prog.

Greta Van Fleet - it would be impossible for them to top the debut EP and probably also impossible for them to come up with something remotely original, but as expected this works well. Tony sounds awful on the high notes, and it's the most boring song I've heard from Magnus in ages. Yeah, fine, it's heavy. Who cares if it's not any good?

So I just got to hear the new record, "Tiara". The long and short of it is this; it sounds exactly like a safe Seventh Wonder album. Basically, if you take the narrative of "Mercy Falls" and the approach of "The Great Escape", you get this record, but it doesn't go far ...

I adored the "Dracula" record, and have been worried about this since the moment it was announced. Sorry, but Nils is not sinister sounding enough to play the part of Vlad The Impaler. The song is pretty good, but Nils lacks all the gravitas that Jorn had. They needed to get Jorn on board ...
