Re: What are you listening to right now?

ARTIFICIAL LANGUAGE - Distant Glow As with both previous albums, this is killer djent-influenced next-gen prog metal. Very melodic, very technically proficient. Love it. But, why - oh why - why is this just an EP instead of a full length? I won't put EPs on my year-end list, so this is going to be ...

LOST IN SEPARATION - Sabertooth Progressive Metalcore - somewhere along the lines of ERRA, early-Architects, Invent Animate and even the more aggressive parts of Born of Osiris. Mardoch, this one is for you ... XBemmkqjpuY I don't love the vocal production, but everything else about it is great. Th...

Saw that Fallujah and Persefone are going to be within striking distance, and on a Friday at that!, so now I've got Fallujah's Empyrean on.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Speaking of Thank You Scientist, it really sucks to hear the vocalist threw in the towel. He is very unique and fit that music like a glove. Don’t know if that means no more music from them or not. Guitarist is the genius behind the music so let’s hope they continue with some music, even an all ins...

Job for a Cowboy - Moon Healer. I was skipping this band before, but this album is a very fine piece of technical death metal. It's on my list of things to check out. I too have always been skipping out on them, but the reviews for "Moon Healer" hints at something I might enjoy. When did these guys...

A Finnish prog-metal band in the "new" style similar to Caligula's Horse, Haken, Leprous, etc.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

I scooped up both Kaiju albums on Bandcamp Friday yesterday and I'm giving them a proper listen now. Todd's son described them as a "tech/djent band that only ever listened to Alice in Chains' Dirt until the tape broke" and I think that's a pretty good description. Very interesting and good. I changed the [youtube] embeds to load over HTTPS rather than HTTP. Finally picked up the latest two Ihsahn EPs when I got the new LP, so going through all of those now. SYNCATTO - Fiction Instrumental next-gen prog / djent from guitarist Charlie Robbins (Artificial Language). This is somewhere in the Animals as Leaders / Polyphia vein, but with a bit of a prog-metal edge to it (less pop than Polyphia, less djent than AaL). Very well done, and it has a few guest pe...

Persefone - Lingua Ignota Part I

I don't know where these folks get their inspiration, but they've never made a boring song. There are so many cool ideas flying around this EP, man. The grooves are incredible. I'm a little annoyed it's a "Part 1" EP and that it's only 26ish minutes, but damn it's a good ride. https://persefone.band...

I still mainly use Bandcamp and you can generally get around this by buying individual tracks off of the whole album when it comes out, but man...what a pain in the ass. Look I'm super down to be a patron of the arts, but don't make it so fucking obnoxious, eh?

I file these in two camps. There are things that I definitely don't like that I won't go back to, and there are things that are compelling, but not instantaneous. If I find something compelling, even if I'm not sure why, I'll come back over time and see if the vibe turns into a concrete appreciation...
