Re: Sons Of Apollo (Portnoy's New Band)

I'm not sure I'm even going to bother listening to the second song. The first one was quite boring. These musicians are all individually good but their widely disparate musical styles simply don't mesh, other than Portnoy and Sherinian who fit well together and thus are the shining points.

Nick and Tom are both very dominant, very personal songwriters so I think this is a rare opportunity to combine two personalities like that. That being said..... I don't k...

Re: Prog power so far.....

POWER QUEST Straight power metal is generally not my thing. That said, some acts in that genre really impressed me this year. This was one of those that didn't really enthrall me much, although I quite enjoyed the Neverworld album and having Alessio Garavello show up for some of the songs was a big...

Re: Daydream XI / The Circus of the Tattered and Torn......

So in addition to selling this disc early before PP, Ken is streaming it early on his Bandcamp. It's not as relentlessly heavy as The Grand Disguise and it's a bit less traditional in style. There are a good deal more acoustic sections and even a samba part (oh yeah, we're from Brazil). Every so oft...

Re: Kansas live

Given the way that Harvey juked toward Houston in the wee hours of Friday I opted not to tempt my fate. In another time I'd've done it anyway, but I have a 5 year old so that kind of unnecessary risk is out. Plini is fantastic live (saw him last December with Todd in NO), and I've been a fan of Dav...

So far, I have to go with Wolverine - "Communication Lost" (2011) Very close is IQ - "The Road Of Bones" (2014), but for the connection with the lyrics, I have to go with Wolverine - CL. Only 2 years and 4 months before 2020... Time flies... I know what you mean. Every single so...

So I just saw that Kansas is playing in my city (holy shit, I don't have to go see Todd for a show!?). The only rub to this scenario is that it's the same night I get home from Houston after seeing Plini and David Maxim Micic. Did you eventually go, given the...situation we had down here? I had a c...

Communic - Where Echoes Gather (October 27, 2017)

Going by this teaser there is a multi-part title epic song. Not something we've ever heard from Communic.

I wonder if that means a proggier album than the last one?

Re: Where to start to see if I like the band Mystery?

Their last two albums are astounding. Delusion Rain hit my #6 slot in the AOTY 2015 competition and finished higher than any non-metal album. The World is a Game is about as good but it definitely earns a plus because it has Nick D'Virgilio on drums. Also, at the time, they had Benoit David who appe...

Re: Fates Warning and Divine Regale @ Boston, MA

I have seen Fates Warning three times now (with Ray) and every time is better than the last one. On the No Exit cut he actually sounded like he did in the 80's tonally. The new material was note-perfect to the album. The setlist was fairly typical but with a couple of surprises, e.g. A Handful of Do...

Re: Glynn Morgan returns to THRESHOLD!

I have been listening to some of the other Threshold albums and it now saddens me a bit that a song like The Rubicon probably won't ever sound the same. If any other Threshold singer can pull that off, it is Glynn (Mac didn't have the range or presence for it), but I still think the immense power an...

Re: Glynn Morgan returns to THRESHOLD!

That new song is fine, and Glynn sounds good, but Threshold has really become bland lately. It's not just that they're playing the same sound, but the songs themselves are interchangeable. I can't get excited when I can hardly tell one song from the next. I don't disagree. You'd think the band woul...

Anthriel - Transcendence (first impressions)

So unlike many other official releases nowadays, this disc came out on a Thursday. And here we are with Anthriel's first record in seven years. One of my all time favorites is the Power of Omens debut, and it definitely has some challenges. I'll check this out! I rarely pull out that disc because it is so dense and difficult to appreciate. It only says Glynn is the rhythm guitarist live. But I feel he will do that in studio too. If he does, at least they keep the double-guitar attack that is essential to Threshold. This Finnish band's debut record "The Pathway" seems to still be unknown and underrated. And it's been seven years between that and this upcoming new album, so perhaps Anthriel will remain obscure. http://lionmusic.com/cd/Anthriel2.html They, however, shouldn't, as The Pathway was a stunni...
