Re: Royal Hunt - Cast In Stone
The song I heard was painfully average. I think Royal Hunt has talent but hasn't stayed with me long-term, with that said, but I don't know if I'm going to listen to the full album anytime soon.

Spock's Beard - Noise Floor (May 25, 2018)
I was among the people who liked the previous album quite a bit, although lately I haven't been listening to it often. Spock's Beard are one of the best prog-rock bands out there nowadays still. And so even if this is reportedly a bit more straight to the point than the last one, I expect it to be e...

Entransient - The Weight of Things (April 28, 2018)
You may know some of the people in this band as the one-and-done Michiganders Silent Lapse. Although that one album was fantastic. This is the second album under this banner, and if you haven't heard the first one, it's in the vein of mid-period Anathema or Katatonia and can really hit some emotiona...

Subsignal - La Muerta (May 25, 2018)
I expect something in the vein of the previous album, which although I really liked it, is not the equal of Touchstones (which is getting rotation right now). I hope on this album the band have found a level of cohesion approaching that found on Touchstones. What we have seen of some lyrics and song...

Re: Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs - full review
If you classified this as a mixture of their last three albums, you wouldn't be wrong. The more polished production and thicker orchestration are characteristic of All Is One, but there is a decisive return to a progressive sound. There are tons of guitars too and the heavier tracks absolutely slay....

This is basically a proggier Widek and so fans of Widek will like this, and non-fans probably won't. Although I do tend to prefer Widek's bigger keyboard arrangements.

I should also say that because this band is local to me, I went to their album release concert with four friends all flying out from the East Coast, and the performance was simply superb. I posted a good deal of footage on my FB profile, PM me for the link (if you aren't friends with me already).

Re: Angra - Omni (2/16/18) ...
I loved the last album, so I am not an Angra elitist, but this song just seems tame. The absence of Kiko seems apparent in the more generic rhythm work, the recording is sterile, and the riffs and melodies just aren't very memorable (even if Fabio sounds admirably like Bruce Dickinson).

This disc - is for lack of a better term - tremendous without being perfect. The live production alone (compliments of Jeff Glixman) is superb. I have all of his full-lengths and I'm going to buy them until his shtick runs thin. I love his combination of spacey djent riffing with spacey guitar-delay arpeggios and spacey synth work. If you haven't guessed, the atmosphere is very spacey and, despite being metal influenced, rather placid and s...

Re: Galactic Cowboys - Long Way Back to the Moon (November 17, 2017)
So this is now out and I have heard it. Expect something in between the first three albums stylistically - some of the simpler structures of Machine Fish with the heaviness of Space In Your Face, and some reworked older and unreleased material that hearkens back to the debut. There are some straight...

Re: DANIEL CAVANAGH / Monochrome.......
I think this might be even better than The Optimist which I quite liked. It's stripped-down and somewhat post-rock ish, with "Soho" in particular heavily influenced by Sigur Ros. Its strengths lie in the immediacy of the vocal melodies (both Danny and Anneke's), stark lyrical minimalism, a...

We've known this to be the working title for a few months and I suspected, and thought, they should keep it. Which I am glad they did.
From what is heard here this will put up a big fight for AOTY 2018 and I'll be excited to hear this material on stage.

This is the best thing I've ever heard with the Lunatic Soul name on it. It's actually pushing towards Riverside territory in the wider use of rock instrumentation and beats (the title track could have been on Rapid Eye Movement, even the bass tone is the same), and the electronic influence is beaut...

I loved their previous album. This one is good but it is very difficult to get into due to the extreme subtlety of the style and the very low-key and usually indiscernible vocals. I like it but it definitely is a step down for me. Speaking of outside of the norm, I wonder if they'd ever get a PP inv...

Galactic Cowboys - Long Way Back to the Moon (November 17, 2017)
While I expect not too many people here know these folks, several people I know were putting in sponsorship bids to bring them to PPUSA in 2018, on the heels of their recent reformation after being split up for over a decade. Musically expect the classic King's X sound (they're also one of the three...

I'm not sure I'm even going to bother listening to the second song. The first one was quite boring. These musicians are all individually good but their widely disparate musical styles simply don't mesh, other than Portnoy and Sherinian who fit well together and thus are the shining points.

POWER QUEST Straight power metal is generally not my thing. That said, some acts in that genre really impressed me this year. So in addition to selling this disc early before PP, Ken is streaming it early on his Bandcamp. It's not as relentlessly heavy as The Grand Disguise and it's a bit less traditional in style. There are a good deal more acoustic sections and even a samba part (oh yeah, we're from Brazil). Every so oft...

Given the way that Harvey juked toward Houston in the wee hours of Friday I opted not to tempt my fate. Their last two albums are astounding. Delusion Rain hit my #6 slot in the AOTY 2015 competition and finished higher than any non-metal album. The World is a Game is about as good but it definitely earns a plus because it has Nick D'Virgilio on drums. Also, at the time, they had Benoit David who appe...

I have seen Fates Warning three times now (with Ray) and every time is better than the last one. On the No Exit cut he actually sounded like he did in the 80's tonally. The new material was note-perfect to the album. The setlist was fairly typical but with a couple of surprises, e.g. A Handful of Do...
