Re: Have we already talked about the neo-prog band Anubis from Australia?

Everyone seems to confuse this band with the Danish Anubis Gate who sound totally different! A Tower of Silence is among PA's highest ranked neo-prog albums ever. I really enjoyed that disc and their more recent one The Second Hand is also fantastic. You may know the guitarist as Douglas Skene of He...

Re: MYSTERY / Lies and Butterflies......

I've listened to this disc twice and I'm still trying to really access much of it. The shorter songs are really good but the longer songs don't feel as compelling as something like Delusion Rain is, at first glance. The vocalist is, as always, the star of the album.

Distorted Harmony - A Way Out (first impressions)

I would retroactively call Chain Reaction one of the top albums of 2014 and Distorted Harmony's performance at PPUSA 2017 was outstanding. However, I am not altogether thrilled with this disc. The songs are more compact and heavier and have more of a djent flavor to them than before, and people I kn...

I was there at the festival when they played it. It's actually a full-song version of what will be the album intro that lasts about one minute, so I wouldn't get too upset about this being overlong.

Re: Widek - Dream Reflection

There are a couple of tunes on this disc that break the mold for him. "False Paradise" even without the extra version's surprise is a rather extreme-leaning song and a couple others have a proggy flair. Otherwise it's business mostly as usual but a great disc.

Honestly sometimes it's difficult to tell the two guys apart stylistically, although perhaps Distant Dream is less heavy and fast, and more progressively inclined.

I wasn't expecting this to be such a light album after the quite heavy and aggressive direction of the last one, but I grew into it the more songs were released and it became clear what this disc would sound like. There are tons of vivacious and colorful keys that give this a quite proggy flair desp...

I've been told to expect a dark, somber and VERY heavy album, reflecting the tremendous emotional roller coaster of the past two years in the Riverside camp. Think Covered in Black relative to past Anubis Gate outputs. Even then I doubt they can replicate the perfection of Anno Domini High Definitio...

I feel like the vocals are a bit low in the mix, but it does sound good. I'm excited to hear more. I wonder why Nick keeps doing that, putting the vocals so low? The vocals were also very low in the mix on This Mortal Coil. Tom still sounds great, and I have high hopes for the rest of the album. Th...

Going from this teaser, the album is going to sound somewhat like that song.

Which is okay with me. I did like the heaviness of the last album, but I do find myself preferring lighter fare nowadays and I love Subsignal's melodic side anyway.

You may know some of the people in this band as the one-and-done Michiganders Silent Lapse. Although that one album was fantastic. I expect something in the vein of the previous album, which although I really liked it, is not the equal of Touchstones (which is getting rotation right now). If you classified this as a mixture of their last three albums, you wouldn't be wrong. The more polished production and thicker orchestration are characteristic of All Is One, but there is a decisive return to a progressive sound. There are tons of guitars too and the heavier tracks absolutely slay....

I loved the last album, so I am not an Angra elitist, but this song just seems tame. The absence of Kiko seems apparent in the more generic rhythm work, the recording is sterile, and the riffs and melodies just aren't very memorable (even if Fabio sounds admirably like Bruce Dickinson).

I have all of his full-lengths and I'm going to buy them until his shtick runs thin. I love his combination of spacey djent riffing with spacey guitar-delay arpeggios and spacey synth work. I think this might be even better than The Optimist which I quite liked. It's stripped-down and somewhat post-rock ish, with "Soho" in particular heavily influenced by Sigur Ros. Its strengths lie in the immediacy of the vocal melodies (both Danny and Anneke's), stark lyrical minimalism, a...
