Re: Amorphis - Queen of Time

Someone was nice enough to let me hear this one .... and I have to say I'm blown away. This could be the best Amorphis disc I've heard since getting into them around the Prog Power time.......I am no Amorphis expert, and am a fan since that PP time, but I have to say that this disc is just blowing ...

How's this one? Stylistically is it comparable to Saigon Kick?

With that said, so far Queen Of Time is great but I don't like it nearly as much as UTBRC. I do think it will take some time before I can decide where it falls for me, but I doubt it will surpass UTBRC for me. Challenge accepted! :) Haven't listed to "Red Cloud" in a long time, so putting...

Re: Amorphis - Queen of Time

I'm only halfway through, and this is easily an album of the year contender. They bring the best elements from their other discs in an AMAZING amalgamation. Picture the folk elements of the early material (especially Elegy), with the melodies of the middle years (Tuonela, Am Universum) and the heavi...

Wasn't going to spend the time going through album by album thoughts, but since Larry opened the can of worms.... AND work is slow today.... Why not? Soul Doubt - This 2-CD set is so hard to get into initially...... As a matter of fact, I shelved it just because of that reason. This one requires ful...

Not trying to put together any sort of top ten yet or anything..... But I found myself in the car the other day amazed at the number of QUALITY new discs I had in the rotation. Re: Dokken: After "Live 1981" recorded in 1983 we now get "Return To The East Live" recorded more than the half in the U

I didn't mean it was talking about Dokken without Lynch, just that the style and lyrics of the song are like Dokken classics, except the lyrics are kind of silly and ridiculous. Then it's sung in such a serious manner it just sounds like they're making fun of that whole old Dokken style. Ahhhhh! Ye...

I don't know about you, but this track always struck me as a tweak at Don Dokken, and makes me smile every time I hear it:

Nah..... This was years and years after that. Plus, pretty sure Michael Sweet wrote the lyrics.

Millennial Reign

Did a quick search but didn't see any discussion on this board about Millennial Reign. They just released their second album, and it's pretty damn good. The first disc had a very 80's Queensryche vibe to it, and the second does to a certain extent as well...... But with more modern stuff mixed in. O...

Re: Tomorrow's Eve / Mirror of Creation III .......

Can't say as though I am as over the moon as Mr. Larry about this, but it IS really a very solid disc. It's been several years since I last played Serpentia, so maybe my memories are askew, but this feels a little less angry, less heavy than that one did..... Larry referred to this one as aggressive...

Re: ARENA / Double Vision ..... first thoughts.

Couple rotations through.... Fantastic disc! Definitely the best of the Manzi era. "Unquiet" was a good disc, but felt like it was recovering from "Seven Degrees", which came off as flat out lazy. This album feels like they are fully back in the groove. I will point out, though, ...

My assumption was that this would be a Roine Stoldt project, featuring Daniel Gildenlow..... Much like their other collaborations. Instead, this sounds like exactly the opposite. Definitely has the gritter / harsher modern PoS sound to it. Still interested to hear the rest, as this is promising.

I had forgotten about this one until I clicked on your link...... I bought this one blind, and regretted it. There is something very artificial about the whole thing. Sure, it has all these styles mixed in, but overall it feels very unnatural, and WAY too light in the loafers.

Great to hear! I was going to buy regardless, but you may have just helped accelerate the trigger finger. "Seven Degrees" was OK, but very disappointing compared to the rest of the catalogue. "Unqiuet Sky" was much improved, but if you're saying this is even better..... Very cool!

Anxious to hear this in full, and really trying to reserve judgement until then. I love Redemption. I love Evergrey. I'm not sure I love combing the two. That being said, if there are two great songwriters out there that can pull it off it's Nick and Tom, so we shall see.

Systematic Chaos isn't all that bad either; it has a couple of great songs (Presence of Enemies I & II, Prophets of War). Alas, it also has "Dark Eternal Night" which is one of my least favorite DT numbers of all time.

I would rather see James and his solo band perform than DT ( duck for cover ) :P

(Throwing pickles at you now.....)

If both were magically playing the same night, I'd go see James as I never saw him solo live. I'm willing to bet, though, that DT live is a better show. Just a hunch.

they've not made a good album since 2003. Other than legacy, are they really important to prog in 2018? See, now that's just crazy talk. Just because they haven't broken any new ground doesn't mean they aren't putting out good albums. "Astonishing" is the only weak moment (for me), and th...

The original, released in 1999 - signaled (IMO), the start of a new progressive metal era for the new decade ...although some could argue that SX / The Divine Wings of Tragedy was that disc - but I'm talking about as close to the year 2000 as possible. Very solid disc indeed. To me, it sounded a little more tightly composed than the last album.... A little less experimental.... But it still works 100% for me.
