Re: Who has heard Circle of Illusion? Larry?...

I had forgotten about this one until I clicked on your link...... I bought this one blind, and regretted it. There is something very artificial about the whole thing. Sure, it has all these styles mixed in, but overall it feels very unnatural, and WAY too light in the loafers.

Re: Lords of Black / Icons of the New Days

Only spun it once, but I really liked what I heard. Definitely hear what you mean about more "hard rock" than "metal", which is 100% cool with me. Also worth calling out: the deluxe version is a must-own. The bonus disc has six extra tracks, including four cover tunes, plus I bel...

Great to hear! I was going to buy regardless, but you may have just helped accelerate the trigger finger. "Seven Degrees" was OK, but very disappointing compared to the rest of the catalogue. "Unqiuet Sky" was much improved, but if you're saying this is even better..... Very cool!

Anxious to hear this in full, and really trying to reserve judgement until then. I love Redemption. I love Evergrey. I'm not sure I love combing the two. That being said, if there are two great songwriters out there that can pull it off it's Nick and Tom, so we shall see.

Systematic Chaos isn't all that bad either; it has a couple of great songs (Presence of Enemies I & II, Prophets of War). Alas, it also has "Dark Eternal Night" which is one of my least favorite DT numbers of all time.

I would rather see James and his solo band perform than DT ( duck for cover ) :P

(Throwing pickles at you now.....)

If both were magically playing the same night, I'd go see James as I never saw him solo live. I'm willing to bet, though, that DT live is a better show. Just a hunch.

they've not made a good album since 2003. Other than legacy, are they really important to prog in 2018? See, now that's just crazy talk. Just because they haven't broken any new ground doesn't mean they aren't putting out good albums. "Astonishing" is the only weak moment (for me), and th...

The original, released in 1999 - signaled (IMO), the start of a new progressive metal era for the new decade ...although some could argue that SX / The Divine Wings of Tragedy was that disc - but I'm talking about as close to the year 2000 as possible. When I heard this disc - and I remember well t...

Very solid disc indeed. To me, it sounded a little more tightly composed than the last album.... A little less experimental.... But it still works 100% for me. The vocals, to me, are actually improved over Caerus, or at the very least mixed a little better so they aren't quite so dominating. And yes...

Plenty of room for both of you on the front porch to yell at the kids on the lawn....

I'm sure I'll check this out, but pretty much everything Roine Stolt is in ends up sounding about the same. Nothing here to make me think this will be any different.

Another solid disc, but there's something slightly off with the recording..... Particularly with the vocals. DC Cooper normally sounds VERY clear and sharp, with every word understandable. 1984 also has a claim on being a special year. You could argue that it was the year of the first full-length progressive metal album: most likely QR's _The Warning_. But Warlord's _And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun..._ might have a claim to the title, as does Fates Warning's _NIght on Brock...

Personally, I am not a major audiophile so some of the issues others point out in a mix I really do not hear, or if I do it does not bother me to any major extent, so with albums like the aforementioned Aquarius or Visitor there is nothing in the original mix that makes me want to hear a "bette...

This is a good one. "Hall of the Mountain King" was released in 1987 and "Streets" in 1989. I changed the post title to include also other albums of 80s, not only 1988. Slight correction: "Gutter Ballet" was 1989, "Streets" was 1991. I still remember senior y...

FANTASTIC release for sure. The overall flow of the concert feels a little off for the first 30 minutes or so..... A little choppy, and the song sequences feel unnatural..... But then it all sort of comes together and builds into a monster. "Valley of the Queens" is worth the price alone.

While a fantastic album to be sure, I never thought this needed a remaster in the first place, so much like the Haken reissues I felt no need to order it up.

Immortal? was my first introduction to Arena, but "The Visitor" is without question the high water mark. Must own material here.
