Re: Stryper radio airplay in the 80s?

It (and most other metal) was mostly an MTV thing. I remember Honestly being played sometimes at high school dances, but I don't remember ever hearing it (or anything else from Stryper) on the radio. I think this depends partly on where you lived. Detroit in the late 80s / early 90s had three reall...

Re: Early 2019 Releases...

Within Temptation - Not loving this. It's not BAD by any stretch, but it is absolutely a pop album that simply has some crunch to it. About half the songs have vocal lines that sound just like everything I hear my 10 year old daughter listen to on the radio, albeit with a better music score undernea...

Re: Early 2019 Releases...

First few discs of the year so far.... Soilwork - Solid album, sticking true to form but bringing in a few more traditional rock elements ala Night Flight Orchestra. More clean elements is a win for my ears. Not a fan of the addition of some of the blast beat drumming though. Neal Morse - Following ...

Re: What's Your Favourite Redemption Album?

For me, it's "The Fullness of Time". The first half of that album is absolute musical perfection, and I would put that run of four songs at the top of ANY "best of" list. "Sapphire" MIGHT be my favorite prog metal song of all time, although there's so much out there tha...

Yes, and if we define "progressive metal" narrowly, I'd say the Arch/Matheos album and a Redemption album of one's choice also belong somewhere on the list...

Redemption for sure!

I'd take the John Arch EP over the Arch/Matheos, but that's nitpicking..... :)

Re: The great prog metal discs of this decade

Great list..... I want to call out the inclusion of Adagio, as I think this was a MASSIVELY overlooked album when it came out. Folks seemed to expect "more of the same" from the band, and instead they took a definite turn in the more technical / prog approach that turned off a lot of folks...

Safe to say this has been the direction they've been headed in for years. The last two albums definitely tipped the scales more in the pop direction already. So long as Sharon is singing it, I'm in...... But the excitement wanes a bit more with each release further from the "Mother Earth" ...

Yes, it was weird how little talk there was about a new Royal Hunt disc. I've enjoyed the previous discs since DC re-joined, but for some reason this one didn't do anything for me. Perhaps a case of music overload. I should go back to this one sometime. I actually forgot that even came out this yea...

8) Lords of Black “Icons of the New Day” – An album that fills my need for old school rock / metal. This one straddles the line nicely between the two, with the latter half of the album pulling in a bit of an Iron Maiden sound perhaps? The bonus disc is also a great addition, including covers of so...

Talent has nothing to do with what I was trying to say. Yeah, they can play the heck out of their instruments, but so can Yngwie, and his music sucks. What I'm saying is there's no one thing about their music I've yet heard that makes me say "THAT is Haken". Dream Theater, Fates Warning, ...

Really?

It sounds painfully generic, and paint-by-numbers DT to me, and I'm the guy who put ADTOE #1 that year.

I'm fine with paint-by-numbers DT. Do what you do and do it well. This song fits perfectly. Sonically, this is a mix of "Train of Thought" and ADTOE.

All of Dream Theater's "Falling into Infinity" demos are better than the final versions..... Some of the songs are really quite different (You Not Me most notably). Plus, there were multiple demos recorded that didn't make the final cut, but were stronger than some of the songs that did (R...

I'm kind of bummed that Feather Moves isn't on the EP, since it's such a good tune (and because I only ordered the vinyl version of the EP thinking it would include everything).

How the heck do you only put out an EP, and leave one of the songs off it for a singles B-side???? Not cool.
